, I as they now are in some of
older organized trades, there will prob-
y be s» and of this kind of frietion.
Some knotty problems of this character are just now taxing the skill of organized labor in this city. The difficulty now in course of adjustment between the Tailors' Union and some of the merchant tailoring establishments is one of the most difficult. The union has a pieoe-work scale, but the Kahn Tailoring company keeps a shop With tailors working by the week. The company prefers keeping its men employed in that way, but oilers to sign a weekly scale of wages that the onion may make, or to put the men on piece-work at the union scale, providing the union will enter into a bond to furnish all the help necessary, which the union refuses to do. The first proposition breaks up their regulations, and the Second is almost impossible, for the reason that there is not a supply of tailors equal to the demand at the busy season. The enforcement of the anion's rules will virtually break up some establishments, for the reason that their business is built upon a grade of work, the price of which is below tiie unu>® scale. Thu class of shops seems tobefillatt a place midway between the

to *u< Union, to whom this problem is presented, want* to do justice to all concerned, and how shall it be done, is the query that it Ironbiing the committee. Last week the Plasterers’ Union decided to do all their own lathing hereafter. This will interfere with the Lathers’ Union by e privilege of lathing, as rers. Formerly plasterers fling, bat in the last two years an omaization of lathers came into existence, which, the plasterers allege, put the price of lething down so low that plasterers could not do that part of their own trade, hence it slipped away from them. They opposed it in every way possible, even preventing the lathers from obtaining a charter from the American Federation of Labor. They now assert that all other means having failed, they have adopted the heroic treatment named. Another ease that is causing considerable comment is the fact that members of the Carpenters' Union work at will in the furniture factories without becoming members of the Furnitnre-worken’ Union, while the furniture-workers are not permitted to work at carpenter work without becoming members of the Carpenters’ Union. The cause of this is that the furniture-workers are not well enough organized to enforce their rules, while the carpenters are. Another case of a similar character is that existing between the stone-cutters and ■tone-masfina. The Stone-masons’ Union is attempting to control part of the stoneeutters’trade. These matter* will soon be adjusted, either by the trades most interested or by arbitration. - Labor Motes. The Central Labor Union will meet next Monday night The bakers’ State convention will meet in this city January 2k John Wilson has been elected president of the Building Trades Council. D. F. Kennedy is distributing his tradeunion directories among the unions this week. • ;♦ ^ The Laundry Girls’ Union will give an entertainment at ita second meeting in January. Judge E. F. Fellows will deliver an address before the Progress Club next Sunday afternoon. * The machine wood-workers have elected William Kennedy delegate to their national convention. The second joint meeting of the legislative committees will be held to-night at Mar chininis’ Hull. There ai-e about one thousand furnitureworkers in tliis city, and only one factory that is unionised. The boas barbers and the Central Labor Union Hundar-eloning committee will hold another conference Friday night, at the Denison House shop. The six largest loqal unions in the city are the Teamsters and Shovelers. Typoeijaphical Union, No. 1; the Machinists; Carpenters, No. 446 and No. 289, and the Telegraphers. These have an aggregate membership of 4,300.

THE ROLLER-SKATE CRAZE.
Wonderful Popularity of the Sport i and Ita Rapid Decline.'
“You remember the roller-skate craze?” Said a reminiscent gentleman. “There probably never was an amusement that bloomed into almost universal popularity so suddenly and then as suddenly disappeared. Almost every county-seat had its skaUag-rihk, and of these rinks many of them remain to do service as places for popular tuserablagea. Most of them now bear the somewhat imposing title of opera! house. So the roller-skating craze served a good turn tn leaving behind it structures » that but for the craze would probably never
have been built.
"There was nothing wrong in rollerskating as an amusement, but it was the profesaor «l the art who brought it into disreoute. Re threw his blandishments about silly impressionable young women and skating-rink escapades for a time occupied
much space in the newspapers.
