Put you say that the majority in the councils of the church are intelligent majorities; that they are majorities of wise man; but that is not always true, forthd majorities within the church have been just as narrow and just aa tyrannical tm the majorities without t e church. It ia majorities not of mobs but of hisbopa and priests that have persecuted in every age. This is not the majority of the populace, but the majority of titled lords and mitred bishops who have used most effectively
thescourge. Majorities prove nothing.
There is another suggestion tbat comes out of these trials to ua, which is that the criterion of orthodoxy within ft* Presbyterian

The Rev. My. Brady's Lecture.
In his lecture on “Variations of Religion,” delivered at St. Joseph’s Hall last evening, the Rev. Eugene J. Brady,.S. J., of St. Xavier’s College, Cincinnati, quoted from the United States census statistics of 1850, 1880,1870, and such of the religious statistics as have been published from that of 1890. The population of this country has increased in the forty years from the first named to the last, 171 per cent. Religion, he said, ought to keep pace in its growth with tne population. The various census returns give the number of scats at the command of each denomination, and from that he figured- the percentage of growth, using the 1?*~ per cent, of population as the standard. They were as follow: The Lutherans, in forty years, 302 per cent; the Presbyterians, 102; the Baptists, 98, nnd from that dawn all through the Protestant denominations Ho the Quakers, which made the poorest showing of all. He said that the Catholic church had always been one that had been abused and condemned; that its policies and principles seemed foreign to the selfindulgency of this country, and that it would have been no more than could have been expected had it taken part in the general decadence of religion. He said he pointed with pride to the fact that within the past forty years it had grown to exceed itself in 1850 just 414 per cent. Ho also quoted statistics as to membership, edifice*, work done and attendance. and in each the Catholic church excelled. He accused Protestant ministers of slothfulness, and said that most any one would become one of them if the salary offered were large enough. He decried the architecture of Protestant churches, and said that they were bnilt to create a fraudulent impression, as their religion did, in that they were enormous hi size, but so cut up with lecture-rooms and Sunday-school rooms and prayer-meeting rooms that their real
seating capacity was .small.
The Rev, Mr. Carstense* On Temperance. The Rev. G. A. Carstensen, of St. Paul's church, in bis sermon last night,.took the grounds that a man had a right to drink if he desired, but that it was much nobler to abstain from liquor. He said that physicians had observed that seven-tenths of disease in hospitals could be traced to the ef-

Bishop Chatard On “Symbolism.” Bishop Chatard delivered his last lecture on “Symbolism of the Catholie Church,” the Church of S3, devoted much attention to the symbols and inscriptions on the sarcophagi of Christian martyrs,. Tried To “Clean Out” a ftaloon. Andy Reinhart, bartender at Jack Christian’s saloon on Kentucky avenue, was arrested Saturday night for assault and battery on his employer. Christian says tbat , Reinhart came to the saloon, announcing that he would clean the place out and began by giving Christian a olac *' eye. Others became involved in the ..ielee and the police were summoned. Officers fiehcigvrt and Kruger were investigating the case when Reinhart returned and .resumed “cleaning out.” He, with F. W. Brude, Ben Lackey and Jake Scial were arrested. They will be'tried Friday. Last Night’s Robberies. The grocery of William Shafer, at Ray and Meridian streets, was entered by thieves last night who took $3 in money and some tobacco and cigars. Room 21 in the Cleaveland Block was rohbed by thieves, who secured entrance over the transom, of a small amount of money. ~ Women Who Work. Ninety-four women have sent some of their own handiwork to the Woman’s Exchange to be sold. The exchange, at 20}i East Washington street, is organized to help women who try to help themselves.

You maj say that these men are honeat and sincere, and that they will be ju,t according io their light, Yes; tiat is quite true. They are sincere no doubt, and they are honest, but then their sincerity may be a narrow sincerity and their honesty may V a narrow honesty, and you know a narrow sincerity is oftentimes as prejudicial as an insincerity, and a narrow honesty is oftentimes as baneful in its conseq, The8utn ofldMJbat*!’ have said ia this, that the Presbvterian church should be tolerant: that it should be gentle with its teachers; that it should give scope to the intellects and the consciences of the men who are laying down God’s law for the redemption of the world from its sufferings and sins. The church can make nothing by anathemas; the chnrcn can make nothing by persecution; the church can make nothing by the dominion of an iron hand. Persecution and anathema and the iron hand have in every age been a failure; in every age they have done wrong to the church; in every age they have been disloyal to the Son of Goa, whereas liberty has always been

The church has tried to crush, in times gone by, ^reat intellects, and great and noble Let us believe that Dr.Br;g<sandDr. Smith, and all men like them, are >o j honest to be hypocrites, too sincere to be knaves; that if they are in the Presbyterian church it is because they believe in the Pie byterian church, and ti ere let us leave their destiny, their orthodoxy and their teaching to their own consciences and to their God. Heresy trials amount to nothing good. If they ic juit they only give latitude to every ave.ant aud whimsical individual, and the air shall become tumultuous with the idiosyncrasies and caorices of disordered minds. Every crank then should speak his own gospel, every absurdity should then become appended to a creed. On the other hand, if they convict; they do not prove the defendant to be wrong; they do not prove that the dogma he haktaught is false and unfaithful to the word of God, for majorities can never prove the truth: they can not strike out an infallible, unerring light. Conv.'ction does not mean truth vindicated and established. What it does mean is a deluge of hy; crisy, deceit and hirelingism within the churcn. For then men will not have the manhood to speak out their convictions, and they will seal their lips with lies and sell their consciences for P 8o? if we can not have infallible dogma, let us, In the name of God, at least have honesty, at least have a conscience pure and uncleflled, and to this end we must have liberty—liberty to think within the limits of conscience and
within the boundaries of truth.
