Shortly before the cave-in occurred tbs night foreman informed the men tbat the ground was very soft, and instruoted them to leave at once should they note signs of an impending collapse. A few minutes later Ed Moran and Tom Eisies, who were in the main tunnel near the place of danger, heard an ominous creaking among the timbers overhead and called to James McGowan, who was wheeling ore into » chufe further in. A moment more and the timbers crushed together, letting into the slope a greai mays of earth. The twd men, Moran and Eisler, were hurled back and Against the side of the tunnel with great force. They managed to crawl to the outside, but of McGowan nothing is known. He may be crushed under the earth or be may have made bis escape into the drift which wps near him. Eastern excursionists in this city yesterday were Dr. W. Hanford White, of 357 Fifth avenue, New York, and Helen Paulding Smith, of Yankton, S. D., who, after a briel courtshiu in transit, resolved to unite their joys and sorrows. Bev. George Kline, chaplain of the lower House of the Legislature, pronounced them one. To-day the bapoy couple will proceed on their tonr to the Pacific coast, whence they will go to explore the mysteries of the old world.
