A Magwfesat Analance Give the Booster Fees an Kethmaiaeile Receptioo. Mr. Jaaea Whiteomb Riley never met with n kindlier nod mere eaUinslaatio reception than that given him by tbe splendid aodieade that Iliad every part of tbe Grand Opera House lest night. The audience wae representative of the eity’e intelligence nod refinement, and Mr. £. W. Halford's greeefnl and well-considered introduction •f Mr. Riley was net a more fitting compliment to the Hoosier poet than were tbe close attention paid to every word be altered end the sympathetic demonstrations and manifestations ot approval that came from the ladies and gentlemen in front. Perbsps Mr. Helftmi himself gave the impression to this When be said: “In looking over this magnifieent audience I am impressed with tbe foot that there is at least on# conspicuous difference between a prophet and a poet; While a prophet is not dithout honor, save in his own country, n poet—our poet—may well felieiiate himself that be is most esteemed and admired where best known, and ibat it is among bia friends and neigbbors in tba State of bia birth and tba city of his home, that the warmest meed ot reeAgnitioa and welcome awaits him.” Mr. Riiey again demonstrated that, as a monologue entertainer, he has no equal. In an introductory way, be referred to uis strong desire to preserve in his various character-sketches, the homely dialect of the Hoosier termer, whieb, he thought, worthy of perpetuaiioo la its better uses aod gentler forms. It was this inspiration, ho said, which suggested “When the Frost is on tbe Funkin’ ami tbs Fodder's in the Shock,” which be gave in his Inimitable way. as an illustration of the more pathetic forms of dialect, he gave that beautiful little study, ‘•Ndthia’ to Say, My Daughter,” aod followed it by the sketch, wbieh be said was dialeetic only tb its suggestions, “That Old Seeetbeart of Mine.” ''Out at Old Aunt Mary’s” and “The Contented Farmer,” came in for their share of the appleuse, which enlivened the enteneiomeat throughout, and Mr. Riley presented one of his best prose sketches, “The Boy from Zeeny.” One ot tbe best things ot the evening was tbs pathetic “Good-By, Jim; Tske (fere of Yourself,” recently published io tbe Century, nod Iben, ip the same sad strain, came Carl Hans's Christmas story (“Dot Leedle Poy of Mine”), by special requast, and iollowing it “New Y ears at OJd Man Wiliard’a.” Mr. Riley expressed to tbe audience hie gratitude for the reception which had greetad him, and their evident appreciation of his efforts. He closed his entertainment with “The Educator,” in which the people who listen to him find a perennial delight. I., D. A W. EXTENSION.

A Director Soys tbe Rood Will Bo Built Beyond Decatur, Probably to Quincy. President Hammond, ot the I., D. & W. Road, to expected in the city in two weeks, when the receivership will probably be cooeluded and tba property go formally into the hands of the company. There to bo longer any doubt of tbe intention of the company to push thelong-talked-of weitern extension. A director of the road said to-day “We can not afford te ait down at Decatur aud let otbar roads step io aud occupy the territory properly belonging to us. When the receivership is settled and the weather becomes to 1 hat we can work there is to be some lively Work done at our western terminus. We shall probably reach out for Quincy, lii. The most favorable route will be from Decatur to Springfield, thence by way of Ml Sterling to Qqincy. This extension will be approximately 160 miles iu length through some of tbe finest portion! of the State. As our present line is
C
ut 153 miles io length, you see we intend to more than double our line, and what is more we intend to get the entire undertaking done this next summer. Tue I., D. A W. has the most,, direct line West, and all it needs is proper extension to become one ot the best
roads iu this part of the country.”
