to question various physicians about tho prevalence, found that each bad three or tour aad sometimes many more eases ef the fever under their charge. One physician said he bad thirty,' bat eome of tho others were inclined to doubt this somewhat. From tho best information that can bo obtained it appears to bo a reasonably conservative statement that there is at present fully twice aa much typhoid lover in Indianapolis as ever before at any one time, bnt that the fatality from it is not aa great aa it has been ia other yearn In /act there have been comparatively few deaths from it thus far, and th e disease appears to be decreasing somewhat. Various theories regarding the origin of the disease have been made public in the last few weeks. That moat commonly accepted by the pnMie generally is that it arisen from the nee of impure water. Whether or not this bo truo, it it cortain that people are abandoning their eurface wells, and either using hydrant water or siokiugdriven wells. One gentleman, who is in a position to know, ■ays that nearly 1,000 deep driven wells have been sunk here inside ot a month, and tho demand for them is greater than can be sup-
plied.
Dr. T. B. Harvey, whose views on the typhoid question were solicited by a reporter, said that then was here, at present, as well marked typhoid fever epidemic as he had seen in his thirty-eight years of medical practice. He thought that ths sooner both phyaiciaaeand people recognized the disease forjnst what it ia—straight typhoid fever—the better it would be for all concerned. Dr. Harvey does not recognize the so-called “typbo-malarial" fever. He raye there may be a malarial element, com plicating the fever, cansiog greater ebsogea ot the daily temperatnr* from the usual thermal line of typhoid, but all the essential symptons of typhoid are •till present. Dr. Harvey explained that Dr. Woodward, of the United States array,
first originated the componud name, supposing us pathology and morbid anatomy to be different from typhoid. In a subsequent paper, read before the International Medical congress at Philadelphia, Dr. Woodward retracted, admitting that he had been misled mod declaring bis belief that the lesions of “typhoid-malarial fever” were the same as those of the typhoid. Dr. Harvey added, that the term, though widely and generally employed, was unfortunate and misleading in both theory and practice. Even mild cases of typhoid might take an unfortunate turn, and the people should not be allowed to think any form of typhoid, no matter how mild, was trivial. Mild typhoid might mass its poison on the intestines and produce a total perforating ulcer. “We may have,” said Dr. Harvey, “iu this city, cases of walking typhoid, as it is called, with which patients may not evsn go to bed, or only for a week or so, but it is typhoid none the less. Mild orsevere, it isa dangerous disease, and the people should not be led to think that there i* enough ot the malarial element <n it to rob it of he danger The feet is people of all ages and station. iu life are sick and ere dying of typhoid fever in this city, and the ten cases now in the city hospital, as against none, or only <-ne or two, as is usually the case, is proof of it. No unscientific view should be used in describing this fever that will lead people to relax their care and vigilance in suppressing it. It is a fever alwavs prevalent in ciues. Its poison may be hidden or dormant, bat sooner or later the few cases multiply aud the specter stalks into many households. It should be reoognixed by its true name and fought tor what it is. There is no use in calling treason state sovereignty, or trying the common murderers of law and police as anarobists and socialists. I call a spade a spade, and know it when I see it, and the same with typhoid. What we want to do ia to recognize typhoid fever and stop its spread in families and neigbborhooda, and not higgle about there being a little malaria spread over it. It is the typhoid fever people are dying of, and not the malarial.** All the railroad boys say that Dalton, The Hatter (Bates bouse), sells a better Scotch cap for the money than any hat store in town.
