The picture whiob was presented to Armstrong assembly, K. of L. at the time of the recent demonstration, will be disposed of by let to the membership Thursday evening of next week. The naeael entertainment by the Sebwabisa Aid society wae had last night at Moult hall, and there was a large crowd present. The deceased was tent to that institution from Brightwood. The twenty-fifth ward appears to be again quarreling among themselves, much the same as they did four year* ago, when Councilman Herig took advantage of the eplit to be elected in n district heretofore considered to be impregnably democratic. Mrs. Itosa Vondurg, reported misting from the home of her sifter, Mrs. Goets, on Eut St. Clair street, wae found last eveutng near Greenwood by John Murphy, nod was returned to this city on the midnight train. Why Sugar Cause* The Tooth Nerves to Jump—Effect ot The First Frost.

’’That tooth is dead and will tnrn black.” “I don’t know about the tooth being dead,” replied the unfortunate man in the dentist’s ehair. "Bat I thought I myself soon would be after that corner had been broken off of the tooth in a collision at the home plate. But what do you mean by aaying that the

tooth is dead?”

“I mean that the nerve and life have been destroyed. A tooth nerve does not end in the cavity in the interiar ot the tooth. It penetrates the bone substance of the tooth and its minute fibers may be found close to the enamel. When this nerve has been destroyed the tooth loses all sensibility and is aa dead as a piece of atone. It will gradually decay and iteanrface will become coated with black, just as rocks in still water or the shells of slow moving sea animals accumulate a deposit of extraneous matter—emblematic of their inert slate. 1 can demonstrate that your tooth is as dead as a coffin nail.” Then he bored a little hole in the cavity of the tooth, and while the patient felt a* if a cellar were being scooped out of his dental region, there was no sharp exquisite pain. When the cavity was reached the dead and decayed nerve matter gave off an unpleasant odor. A probe was inserted to a depth of an inch and a half without causing pain. The

tooth was very dead.

“The tooth next to the deed one has enough life in it to make up for all Josses,” resumed the patient. “I can’t pat anything eweet into my month without causing that tooth to jump about like a brigade of black-horse cavalrv. It i* so sensitive to sweet* that I

can’t kiss my wife without brin

aging on the

The tooth is not hollow nor de-

cayed; what makes it ache anyhow?” “I wss just telling you that thenervee ramify thronghout the bony substance of the tooth. Some of the ends of the tooth nerves are exposed on the enamel, on the side* or at the neck of the tooth. The sugar comes in contact with these nerves, and in decomposing or dissolving, a chemical action takes place that give* the nervea a eeriea of twitches. Either sugar or salt will delequeace about the teeth, sucking away the moisture and producing the eensationa of

which yon complain.”

Sugar and salt purchased at the Pea Green grocery are not exempt from the peculiar qualities noted by the dentist. The best that can be said ot them is that they are not to be had at the ruling retail prices. So also of

many other goods.

The solitary frost that has visited this section has had a marked effect on the values in retail grocery stores. It has “balled” the market. All growing vegetables have been forced op, ana from tbit time forth will be an nncertain quantity. Tomatoes, for in•tanee, are worth $1 a bushel. The crop is practically done for, though tomatoes will be marketable tor some days to come. Grapes are stronger than they were. Catawbaa and Delawares tell at lOo a pound. Concords fetch 6@8c. Peaches are becoming scarce. Theyare held [email protected] third bushel box. Winter vegetables and traits have, of course, not been materially influenced by the weather. Irish potatoes still rule at fil.30 per bushel. Jersey sweets sell at 50o per

peck.

The approach of winter is further noted in the condition of the egg market The retail price haa advar c*d to 20c. Butter is firm at prioea varying from 20 to S5c, according to

grade and condition.

The first quinces of the season are in market. Baskets holding about two-third* of a peck fetch 40c. Apples are unchanged, select fruit being atill held at 40o per peck. It is rather aoold day for melons. Thty are still in market and prieue have not fallen off. Nothing in this line exeept ehristena

A Sensational Story. New York, September 27.—The “Sun” publishes a eenaational atory to-day under the caption "la She Victoria'a Child?” and in the account has the following statement: “There is living now in a very quiet way in the boarding house, at 135 East Tenth street, a middle-aged lady who ia known aa Mra. Kent. In Pkria ahe wa* known as the Countess De Lundi. In the most solemn and emphatic way she asserts that by right she is Victoria Adelaide Maria Louisa, Princess Royal of England and Duchess of Saxony, and that ahe was born in Windsor Castle on November 21, 1840, and that her father was bis highness, the prince consort. ['Mrs. Kent is not insane, but on tba contrary has a very clear head, strong will and excellent business judgment.
