One evening when Napoleon I was in all hb glory there was a grand gala production at tha Grand opera. How many reigning kings and princes occnpied the boxes and balconies it b impossible tor me to estimate; tha vary seats usually occupied by the elaqners were fitted with noblemen. The Prinoese Borgbese, abler of the emperor, the beautiful and accomplished Panline, sparkled aad shone in her box, eclipsing all around her by the splendor of her loveliness, as the •on does its satellite* by tha brilliancy of its ray*. On her neck aha wore a necklace, the diamonds and massive pearb at which, intertwined aad blended with transcendent art, still further enhanced her incomparable brilliancy. Whan aha entered her box there was a murmur of gaaeral admiration. The imperial box opened ia ita turn and the master of tha world appeared, saluted bf these kings and princes with a formidable cry of Viva
I’Emperenr.
It was generally remarked that the empress aeamed unable to take her eyes off her sister-in-law, and appeared to be fascinated, dazzled, like the other occupants of the auditorium, with the marvellous brilliancy af tha necklace. Suddenly the box of tha Prineaes Borgbese opened, and a young nia|or presented hi meet i, wearing the briliianfbiue aad silver uai farm of tbv aids-de-camp of the emperor’s staff. “Her majesty the e in press,” said he, bowing low, “admires tha wonderful neeklaoe worn by your imperial nighaesa, and has expressed the liveliest desire to examine it close.” This episode occurred toward the middle of the second aot. The emir' uric eame and passed away. The third set eon eluded In its tarn. The fourth act came aad paaeed, and the entertainment concluded, yat still tha neeklaoe waa not re-
turned.
The Princess Borgbese took this for a characteristic freak of Maria Louise's. Next day, however, the asked if the neeklaoe had pleased the empress, and whether •he had found the setting end arrangement of the jewels to her taste. The empress waa thnnderstrnck, for she had not seen it, and had sent no officer for it as described. Nspoleon deigned to mix bimaelf np in the affair. Ha had tha names of all the staff officers on doty the preceding evening ascertained And then, one by one, under some pretext or other, he bad them called before nis sister. She did not recognize one of them. They summoned the Prince of Otranto, minister of police. A long council waa held. Everything pomible was done, bnt in Tain. The unfortunate Boucha was ready to tear hb hair in despair. He had set hie keenest blood hounds at work. Bb best detectives were literaliv ran off their legs without result. SEEKING THE PEARL. A Demoralized People—Literally Following a Scriptural injunction. [Atlanta special.] There is a little colored church on the Green's Ferry road, leading oat from Atlanta, midway between the Chattahoochee river and Bweetwater ereek, the congregation of whieh u now in a perturbed condition. The ehureh sits back from the road abont two hundred yards, in a native forest grove, with paths running out from it in all directions to tbs various settlements around. The brethren are Primiora Baptists, greatly interested in the true method ot entering the water, and zealous for the washing Of feet. Lately there has sprung np in the congregation a powerful ezborter named (Simon Brown. One day two weeks ago Simon, who b an indostnoiu tanner, was in the field weeding the cotton, when all of a sudden the scriptural injunction, “deck aad ya shall find,” took complete possession of him. That night he eonid not sleep tor thinking of it, and next day, which was foot-washing day in tha little church, ba appeared there bearing a very solemn look. He aunouneed that he had a vary important eharge to deliver; that the Christ had commanded sinners to seek and they should find; that search should be instituted to the abandonment of every other
dnty.
While ha was speaking the Gavernor’s Horse Guards, of Atlanta, passed by on their way to Camp Grady, in Douglass county. The sight'of th* armed men on horseback so unexpectedly and never witnessed there before, had a thrilling effect on the worshipers. Brawn referred to it aa a divine manifestation, aad urged his bearers to seek at once and not to stop until they bad found the pearl af great price. For ten days the membars af tha congregation have left plows idle aad houses empty, walking around and looking ia tha bidden plaoes for tha treasure; Efforts bava been made by the farmera who need the work of these people to gat them to return, bnt it is useless. They declare that unless they find religion they will b* lost, and that the'only way to find it U to look for it witkoat eaasing. The women are wilder than the men. They go down in old wells and fish aronnd to see what b in the bottom. They turn over stones and logs look under booses, and even daring the long hours of the night strange figures carrying lanterns can be seen moving abont in the forest which fringes the Chattahoochee, looking for the unique object of their search. • Brown is looked upon aa an oracle, and every evening about snodown the superstitious people csther about him to listen to hb latest revelations. Sunday one of the white citiaaos threatened to have Brown tried for lunacy, with the result of nearly taring hb life.
