There was a disposition to laugh down the resolution but eventually, alter much time bad been loet, the resolutions were referred to a committee to be thereafter appointed to consider the natural gas question. The various ordinances that it had been averted would be'introduced by the MeGuffey syndicate and by local companies were not forthcoming, and the only ordinance covering the matter was the Indiana Natural Gaa company's, which had been prepared by the attorneys of the Standard Oil company, and which was introduced by Mr. Thalman. The provisions of this ordinance were given in The News of yesterday. The ordinance was relerred to the special committee without reading. This committee, upon motion of Mr. Swain, consists of the mayor, city attorney, city engineer and five members of the council. The board of aldermen is requested to appoint a similar committee. The committee is directed to promptly investigate the natural gas supply for Indianapolis, to prepare an ordinance regulating the use of the same, and to report to the council at as early a day as possible. It waa also provided that all necessary expenses inenrrea in investigating the um of and supply of ntftural gas be paid by the city. The mayor appointed the following committee, in' accordance with the provisions of the motion: Mesers. Swain, Thalman, Waterman, Newland and Cum-

mings.

Mayor Denny said, after the adjournment of the' council, that he did not fancy the idea of a iafge committee traveling around over the country at the city's expense, having iuu under the guise of seeking necessary information. As for himself, he could go to very lew places, and wnefever he went he proposed to pay his own expenses. He said that he had sought, in the appointment of the commhtoe, to name gentlemen who will seek the needed information intelligently

without unnecessary junketing.

The Allegheny City ordinance relating to the natural gas quettlou has poinu wor.hy of consideration in Indianapolis. It requires

that any cori rights grante

three cents tor each foot of pipe laid, exclusive of service connection, the first payment to be in advance of laying each 1,000 leet, and thereafter annually. The following are the maximum rates: Transportation companica, three cents per 1,000 feet,Irrespective of distance; supply companies, for manufactories, net cost of coal at the rale per ton at which coal is furnished to factories in the vicinity; for private bouses, ranges and cooX-stoves,oiie-dollar-and-a-bulf per mouth; grnies and heating atovea, one dollar per month for the first grate and seventy-five cents for each additional one; furnaces, one dollar per month for each register and seventy-five cents each for additional ones; by meter, not

to exceed seven cents per 1,000 feet.
