HEW SCHEDULE* FOR BATHS.

Whereby Indianapolis Will Be Fronted— Other Railroad News.

The railroad men who have been attending the meeting of the tiaffic association in Chicago have returned. The matter of first Importance before the meeting wag the consideration of a new schedule of rates for the various lines, to bo used when tiie inter-state commerce law goes into effect. It will be remembered that the law prevents the charging of less lor a longer than for a shorter haul. This necessitates the reorganizations ol tariff sheets In every quarter. At the Chicago meeting the Pennsylvania representatives weruforemo-t with a system of rates. It is in brief a graduated schedule based solely on distance. Instead of making the through rates between uny given points the sum of the existing local rates—thus giving a high rate—the plan provides for a slight reduction in present through rates on many classes of freights—not including grain— and a corresponding portion of that through rate for local points between the termini. The Pennsvlvania plan, it is understood, will be urged as the simplest method for harmonizing urn uniform guide to rates. It will be adopt!

the Indianapolis Hues have already agreed upon a method of evasion of the terms of the interstate commerce law whereby they will be enabled to continue to extend favors to theatrical peoole. It is asserted with confidence by agents of rival lines that the companies In question have put the names of many theatrical managers on their payrolls. The scheme Is to pay the managers colo-

ns for securing their troupes as ]

and by thus constituting them employes the com-

e whole matter Is as yet embryonic is only the surface pickings of were ;n the meeting at Chicago,

eason to suspect that oi oolls Hues have already

missions for securing their troupes as passenger and by thus constituting them employes the com panics un ’er the law may pass them tree. Colonel Moore, manager of tho Midland railroad, says that the connection with the Big Four has now been made at Lebanon, and that the work ot extending the road westward to the coal fields of Indiana will begin to-day. The company is now, or soon w ill be, the happy possessor of nine engines and J00 cars of all sorts. A feature of Colone 1 Moore's road is that it Is tiled much as a farmer tiles a field. A tile drain extends under the roadway through the low swampy regions. The effect has been to keep the track dry aud

solid.

It Is understood that Mr. Lynn, commercial agentof the I., P. A C., will be placed ia charge of the passenger as well as the freight business of tho road at Indianapolis. However, Mr. Will King, the present efficient ticket agent, can have the agency If he desires to continue in possession at the salary offered.

Warding Off the Quinsy.

“I am not at all superstitious,” said H. R. Dering, assistant general passenger agent of the Pennsylvania lines, to-day, "but I am not averse to testing harmless and simple remedies, when all other resources have been exhausted.” “Do you carry a rabbit’s foot or a chunk of

assafetida around with you?”

"No, for 1 have a surer remedy. For years I have been a sufferer irom quinsy. I think 1 have not missed a spell of it for ten years until this winter. Generally, I have had it twice during a year. More than a year ago a ticket agent at Peoria told me that he had heard that a silk string tied around the neck had bad a uliimanlc effect la warding off the quinsy, in the case of a friend. I quietly appropriated the information, and when 1 came home told my wtle what I had beard. She suggested that there might be some unknown potency in a silk string, and at any rate there could be no harm irom applying it. So 1 led a black silk cord around my neck—you see I am wearing it yet—and from that day to this 1 have not had a touch
