understand what he was doing.
I beg leave to say there was no man whose name was mentioned m Saturday’s News that, at the time of being taken into the organization, did not fully understand what he was doing. But now for the other side. If the officers have so far violated their oath by furnishing The News the inlonnution which they have been giving each day. why should they be unsuspected of lying to each man they approached, a.-king him to become a member. The constitution say* that any man violating this >ath shall be publicly denounced as a willful perrer, unworthy of the respect or confidence of all men. It furthermore prohibits the publication of the oath or any business transactions whatever. Now, that they have furnished a correct list of the members, by-laws. etc., hive they not violated their oath the s <me as those men who have seen proper to weaken, and square themselves tvith Mr. Vilas? This news is undoubtedly furnished by some of the beheaded officers, as there is no one who has had access to this list or the minutes of each meeting excepting them. Which will the public place the most confidence In? The men who are disposed to stick to their oath and pledge are getting disgusted

Ia£ j Corydon. John Fonner, living two miles north of Decatur, had fifty-four shocks of wheat destroyed by fire. A train ou the Grand Rapids & Indiana railroad stopped opposite his field of wheat to take water, (and when starting up threw sparks into the field, igniting the stubble that communicated to the shocks. The executive committee of the state military encampment, to be held at Latayette, has deposited $4jD()0 in the First National bank of Lafayeme as a guarantee fund to oover expenses. This is in addition to the $2,500 already subscribed by the citizens oi that place to pay the free-for-all drill prizes. The northern penitentiary at Michigan City now contains 730 prisoners, th- largest number ever confined in the institution. Twice the number could be accommodated, if necessary, by celling them double. During the month of June thirty-nine convict* were received, and of the number nine were
old-timers. '
One hundred and forty men in the employ of A. fi. Col born. Raw*on, Root A Co. and L. Wilson A Co., lumber dealer* at Michigan City, have struck against a cut of ten cents a day. cago yards.
