The Postmaster General Takes the Coaree Anticipated, and Reiterates His Order At the meeting of the postal clerk brotherhood the other day there was strong opposition to the passage of the motion directing that a telegram be eent to Vilas, asking if be would gire audience to a committee with a statement of grievances, and also against •ending the committee, for it was argued that Vilas would claim that, having been dismissed, they were not representatives of government employes, and therefore were without authority to speak. The clerk making this argument budded pretty wisely, for Vilas condescended to talk, Saturday evening, and this was the very point be made. He also said he was constantly kept informed of the movetn 'cts of the clerk., and that he knew to a man who were the insiitutors of the brotherhood, and who were members, and again be made proclamation that “eibcieut clerks, who attend strictly to tbeir duties, need have no tear of being disturbed in their positions; but those Vbo attempt to dictate a rule of action f>ir the department will certainly find that they have made a great mistake."

| tintt any smart clerk could, in a week’s ; lime, acquire sufficient faciftiy and skill to j perform the duties of a railway postal clerk ; accuraiety." This same official a Go rolun- | leered the statement that il the ludianapuhs j committee undertook to wait upon the post-master-general tor the reinstatement or tne members of the brotherhood who had been j dropped, it would only precipitate the disi comtiiure of the organization, for Vilas t would deni with it with an iron hand. Yesterday the Cincinnati Commercial-Gazette gave considerable attention to the situation. Among -the dismissals in that division was J. L. Chamberlin, who had been ten years in tne service, and was regarded as a Very efficient man. Chamberlain was not, nor had he been, one of me brotherhood, bnt such was Gwill's feeling against him that after he tamed over his key and the pass, the superintendent refused him the courtesy of a trip-puss to his home, a courtesy never denied to any discharged employe. Immediately following these dismissals, according to the Commer-cittl-Gtiz* tie, Gwin was congratulated Oy a democrat, and was asked why he had not made the number 32d. and that Gwin responded, “Just you wait and tee that I get ail of them betore I leave here." Hugh J. Jameson, enotber old clerk in that division, attempted to tender his resignation, but he was headed oil by a dismissal, which went npou record before the other could be written jut. Both here and at Ciucinnati complaints are made of the promotion of incompetent clerks, simply for political reason!, in two instances in this division two fourth clerks being advanced to head-clerk positions over old and experience second-aud third clerks, the latter standing well up in the nineties on examination, while the clerks advanced were scarcely above eighty. Jnm-i-on also tells of the promotion of W. J. Stewart at one bound from tourth to head clerk, and that when he himself protested as not being qualified tor the position, Gwin told him not to be too scrupulous, for it he didn't take it some other democrat would, lu this division, both in and out ot the service, the republicans go for Major Hitt without stint, and if talk could make a fellow’s ears burn, his would be in a blaze. He is charged with doing everything in his power to curry tavbr with the democracy, and with favoring the democratic apimiutees at the expense of his old republican associates; that he is .continually consulting w ith Creelman; that he refused to vote at the last election tor fear the democracy would bounce him; that he only examined new clerks upon the lines of the road which they run, ami not upon the state; and soon, ad infinitum. All of this may or may not be true, bat it shows how the major ia regar led by hie republican associates. It looks foolish upon its lace, however, as when the democracy get a little better fixed in the saddle some one will cast an envious eye on tbe head-clerkship, and away will go the

The Ilantington county nonnal institute will open at Huntington July 19. Smock’s sawmill, near Elnulale, Montgomery county, waa burned Thursday night. Loss, $2,000. The annual reunion of the Forty-seventh Indiana regiment will be held at BlulTton September 30. The Vincennes district conference of the M. E. church will be held at New Lebanon, July 26, 27 and 28. Thomas Dial, a soldier of the war ot 1812, died at his home in Washington township, Whitley county, last week. Bob Shinn, one of the men who robbed the postoffice at Elwnod and then escaped, has returned and given himself up. William H. Hardesty, one ot the proprietors and late editor of the Rockport Pocket, died at Munville, Fla., £ few days since, of consumption. Mrs. Frances Cope, the oldest settler of Wayne township, Montgomery county, died last Friday, aged aeveniy-eight years. She was a member of the United Brethren
church.
The Twenty-seventh regiment, at its re-

His suit agaiust wile No. 1 was dismissed in August, 1884, lor want of prosecution, and in the spring ot lS3o he woed and won the young daughter ot Moses Gaunt, and the couple went to Cini, where they were married. He then returned to this citv, where he passed under the name of Wolf Morris, hut last April, becoming alarmed at an inquiry which had been set on foot, he took his last wi!e to Greenwood, and afterward to Edinburg. Meanwhile his first wife, ander the name of Stella Wilson, remained here, and some lew weeks ago she committed suicide with morphine, and her friend, by the name ot Norris, who was deeply attached to her, soon after followed by the same route. At time of arrest Morris was not aware of the death of his first wile, mid he labored under tbe impression that she had instigated prosecution, when in fact it was No. 2. The latter also filed an adultery charge against wile No. 3, but owing to her ill health she was

An Arrogant Act. * Charles Heyer, saloon-keeper, was before the mayor to-day tor violating the liquor law, and he was represented by Simeon. Nothing can exceed the quiet insolence with which they listened to the statement of the patrolman making the arrest, offered no defense, and then appfoled to the criminal court. It would have been well could the criminal court judge have witnessed this scene, and noticed the manner in which it is patent that they feel they have a lien on the court above. There is consolation, however, in hoping that next fail may see a change of

A Terror Loose Again.
Saturday evening John McHugh, who is a bad citiren, John Flaherty and a man named McKenna run amuck on West Washington street, and several meu were knocked down from pure cusseduesa, and one fellow named Dawson', who works in u brick yard, was severely injured. Afterward McHugh was arrested by Patrolmen Laporteand Ualtery, and Flaherty was captured by them last night, but McKenna is siiil at Jarae. McHugh was arraigned to-day and given a work house sentence for drunkenness, while the assault case will be carried to the criminal court. Flaherty was lined tor plain assault. It developed that McHugh was recently sentenced for six months to the work hou-e by Acting Judge Clarke, and alter serving half ihe nme was released witnout gubernatorial intervention, and as now understood, by order of Clarke. This fact has given, rise to considerable ill feeling over the way work house prisoners are permitted to evade penalties, and the matter will he laid helore the

The Firework* Ordinance Ignored. Giv* tha Hoy* a Show.
A citizen makes the suggestion that while (he city ia agitating the question what to do with Garfield park, or rather what improve- ' meat to make therein, and what action to ; take to prevent it being a resort for harlots and hoodlums, that some thought be given the hoya, with the view of providing them with a play-ground, and tha suggestion follow* that the park is big enough to give them a district where they can plaf hall and romp to their heart’s desire. The avidity with which tha lade seize dpon the commons throughout the city, particularly ia the south and west, show how' dearly they prize a bfeathing place, and it seems that it is within tbe power of the city council to give this suggestion careful consideratiou, for there ia more in it than apparent at first

term in prison.
