Yesterday was a quiet Christmas, though a pleasant one. Tne croaker who had been treasuring up during three days of warm sloppy weather the traditional lie that a “green ChrftUnas make* u iat graveyard” (
was silenced by the whiff of snow, and the j udiu k cold wave which came so timely. The shot- "” rtc
gun policy of observing the day with noise and smoke was abandoned except by a few small boys and an occasional freeman whose hip-p ket was swollen with a navy. The cuurohes, theaters and various societies afforded public amusement at night to large numbers of people. At the Third Christian Church several hundred more peoplethan the building would accommodate came together to hear and see the Sundayschool exercises. Not only was Santa Claus there, but his entire family, including his vagrant sou, “Mose,” dressed as a diminutive Mephistopheles, was introduced. The latter emerged from a box of good things which Santa had sent by express. Professor Iden, ot Butler University, and the pastor, Rev. Mr. Van Btiskirk, made brief addresses. At St. Paul’s Episcopal Church last night Bishop Knickeroaokerand Dr. Jeuckes made appropriate remarks and speedily gave way
to Santa Claus’s ministrations.
The eight hundred pupils of Fletcher Place M. E. Sunday-school last night had a glorious time. “Christmas Chime Bells” and the cantata “Immanuel” were- rendered as preliminary to the festivities of the occasion, conducted, of course, by old Santa. At the Seventh Presbyterian Church the

Two Old Jacksonian t\ St.’s Yet on Duty. A correspondent of The News seems a little quisiical over a statement that Colonel Jones, the Indianapolis j>ostma.ster, who is seventy-five years old, and who had been postmaster under General Jackson. The inference is that the writer had some doubts on the subject, but The News quieted his doubts by stating that Colonel Jones was really appointed postmaster at Columbus, Ind., in 1836. There is nothing, however, remarkable in that any way, when it is considered that those born about that age ot the world belonged to a very robust race; besides that, democratic politicians seemed to have matured very young in Jackson times, for we find another ancient democratic postmaster among u\ State House Commissioner Nel-

The suit against the Harrison county auditor, A. M. Brewster, has been continued until the February term of court. The County Commissioners refused to allow Mr. Brewster his salary until the suit against him is disposed of, and also required him to give a new bond. He has no money with which to run the office, and as no one seems willing to advance it he is in a quandary as
to what to do.

Shipi’Ino Cattle—It is pretty hard to write un

a market when there is nothing on sale Yesterday being u holiday nothing was doing iu tlie yards, it seems our country shippers took in the holiday and
failed to siiow up. Our Ea tern, as well »s local buyer*, wo have tn lull force, ar anxious for cattle. One ouyer tntori wanted to hay twenty-live, car loads, and othe
seemed to be equally asanxioit*. If any cattle here,
would sell fully 26 cents bigm-r than last week.
Htnce w riting the above there has been a few loads of cattle received mid sold ar about 35 cents higher than could have been obtained for the same cattle
last week.
Cows and Mixed—There is nothing worthy of note in the butcher department, therefore we can say but little: but are ot the opinion that If we had some good butcher cattle here to-day they would

Kev. John R. Elmore, a Baptist minister ot the "hara shell” persuasion, living four miles southwest of Clayton, committed suicide Christmas eve by drowning himself. He was fifty-eight years of age, and was the minister for a Uaptist Church known as Mount Moriah. Two months ago the church lenrued that Mr. Elmore was a bigamist and upon conclusive evidence he was expelled from the pulpit. He left a note in the pocket of his coat, which he hung on a stake, saying: “I am in this pond. Bleacc take me out aud bury me.”
