The Jewish Ministers’ Association has determined to organize a Jewish Sunday-school Union'. The Cincinnati Law and Order League is making an effort to cluae the theaters on Sunday and will probably succeed. General Logan’s book will be called “Treason’* Pathway to the Rebellion” and will be iaaued about January 1. A very large sale is expected. The latest communication from the powers to the Servian Government promised that the steioa quo aate in Ro-uaelia would be restored, and demanded that the Servian army be demobollzed. Miners at Galena are excited over a rich discovery of land ore nmde about a mile from that city, ou what is known as the Underwood ground. The mineral was struck at a depth of twenty-five feet. Thera u couaiderable excitement at Chico, Cal., over the discovery that the late appointmeat for postmaster for that city was accoin* plished through a fraudulent petition sent to Washington. An investigation has been ordered. Twenty eases ofsearlet fever were discovfred yesterday in tenement blocks at Fall Kiver. Mass. One of the stricken children attended one of the most crowded schools, containing over eight hundred pupils. Great excitement exists. Minister Cox reports from Constantinople that Dr. Sterrett, the emioent archaeologist, who has been making explorations in Asia j Minor, and about whose welfare there was considerable anxiety, is well, and has just returned to Athens. It Is understood that a movement is on loot to consolidate all the Pennsylvania nat-ural-gas companies outside of the Philadelphia or Westinghouse Company, with a vlfew ; of giving that corporation a strong competi- , tor. The Standard Oil Company is said to j be back of the scheme. The Gautier steel works of the Cambria Iron Company, Johnstown, Pa., have been ordered closed for an Indefinite period alter Saturday. There is a large stock of manulactnred wire fence on hand. Repairs will be made while the mil! is shut down, Five hundred men are directly affected. Washington Goslp. Washington, October 28.—The gossip about the probability of Secretary Manning leaving the Cabinet lias been started again. There Is a rumor circulated that Treasurer Jordan is to be made assistant-secretary to •eive until .-secretary Maiuiiug’s retirement ju the near future, when he is to be made secretary. A -Massachusetts man, it is said, will be made treasurer in event of this new deal. In the compilation of bis annual report Treasurer Jordan is preparing what he believes will be a deadly assault upo i the silver dollar, lie has a number.of clerks looking up tue cost of transportation and carting for a period of years, and he will show what an enormous expense it has been to the country to maintaiu this inouey. The figures, it is said, count up a heavy total, lie will attempt to prove that the silver dollar has no place whatever in the monetary world. The meeting of the Naval Advisory Board, called for yesterday, io take into consideration the subject of completing the unfinished cruisers; did not take place, owing to the detachment, at his own request, of Admiral Simpson, president of the board, whose successor has not yet been appointed. Mr. Curry, the newly appointed Minister to Spam, was entertained at dinner last night by his predecessor, General John W. Foster. Among the guests were Secretary Bayard, Chief-justice Waite and the Spanish Minis-

Corroboration ot Depew’s Story. Cincinnati, October 28.—James Boyle, of the Commercial-Gazette, has unearthed some very interesting facts, showing that Hon. Chauncey M. Depew's information in the Grant-Johnson matter is not only correct, but is old news to a number of people. General Grant probably had no more Intimate friend than Philip B. Swing, of Batavia, O., the General’s old home, and to Mm the same story was told in September, 1871, at his home in that city. General Grant related the circumstances in detail at that tipie, and possibly more* elaborately than to Mr. Depew. Belore his death Judge Swiug placed the story in the hands of Ids family, both branches of which yet recollect it. In March, 1885, Judge James B. Swing, of Batavia, published the Grant-Johnson story in the Clermont County Courier, as told him by his father-in-law, Judge Philip. Judge Peter F. Swing, of Batavia, Circuit Judge, also recollects the circumstances. All of the Depew story is not only given in full, but is entirely corroborated by the published statement referred to. Chauncey M. Denew said: “When the contradictions are all in I shall come out with my proofc. I know what 1 was writing about, and at the proper time will reply in a manner which I believe will set the whole controversy at rest.” The Chinese Going. Seattle, W. T., October 23.—.All the Chinamen employed by the Cedar Mountain Coal Company, about forty in number, were discharged yesterday. All mines in the Seattle coal region are now operated without Chinese labor. Augusta, Ga., October 28.—Violent agitation of the Chinese question has broken out in the .city since the publication of the outrage at Seattle, W. T. Vor several years past the Celestials nave been flocking hither. They have prospered in business, mod bow own so many groceries, wholes le and retail, that a large number of citizens to-dny-petitioned the City Council to ‘ ■ steps to prevent farther immigration, j.. a feeling runs high, as the Chinamen have many friends among the lower class?*. Shutting Oat Use OOtee-Seokere. Washington, October 28.—The following was to-day promulgated by the Presideut lor the information of the public. Exbcctivb Mansion, October 27.
