There are old, tough and dry vegetables at cheapening prices. The following prevail: Irish potatoes, 40a50c per bushel from store, 25a 80c from wagons; sweet potatoes, 40s60c per peck; Bermuda onions, 10c per pound, or 25c
per quarter peck.

MUNIOIPAX MEM TINGS. The Connell Orders the Low Relative he the Sale of lasparo Rood Enforced— Amended Street Car Ordinance Pa seed by the Board. A lengthy special session of the council was held last night, and considerable business was transacted. By a vote of 14 to 9, the awarding of the contract for the proposed west end sewer was postponed until next January, when the tax levy for sewer purposes will have been collected. The dty tmaurer’s March report showed the following: General fund overdrawn $15,422.12; balance In Tomlinson fund, 885,190.85; additional city hall fund, $28,363.80; sinking fond, $16,225.24. The city clerk drew warrants for $44,452.07 daring the month, and the mayor collected $462.78 in flues and fees. The street repair department expended $5,3$$. 35. A request of the street car company to defer building the Prospect street line was referred to the committee on railroads. The eominluee appointed to Investigate the management of smallpox, recommended that the contract with Dr. Henthorne ae not
renewed.

A substitute meat inspector ordinance was Introduced by Couucllman Dowling, whereupon a resolution was offered by Conn ctlman Edenharter, directing the board of Health to have 5,000 circulars priated, containing sections 2069 and 2070 of the re vised statutes, and sections L5, 16, 17,13, 19, 20 and 56 In ‘ an ordinance establishing certain rules tnd regulation for tbe government of tbe public markets.” The resolu-

Is support of the resolution Dr. Edenharter said that the municipal and sututory laws already In existence fully cover the provisions of the proposed meat inspection ordinance, and if the officers of the city performed their duties with proper vigilance the sale of all unwholesome food could be prevented. The only object there could be In adopting the meat inspection ordinance would be to give employment to three or more parsons who can find nothing else to do. The city sanitary officers should be required to do their duty, and If they neglect or fall to, they should be‘removed. There could be no excuse for their neglect of duty, and no further trifling should be tolerated. He believed In enforcing the laws, and if they were bad repealing them. Messrs. Thalman, Pearson, Trusler and others spoke In favor of the substitute resolution, and Mr. Spabr opposed it. It was passed by a vote of 21 to 2, and all matters relating to the meat inspector
were stricken from the files.
E. H. Dean, ex-councllman, was elected a city ball commissioner to fill the vacancy caused by General John Coburn’s resigna'-
tlon.
A petition from G. G. Grady to build a railroad from Maryland street to Washington, on Missouri street, thence west to West street and south to Maryland, to be used for the amusement of children, was referred to tbe committee on railroad. The State house commissioners petitioned for a special policeman, to be stationed at the state house grounds during the building
season.
Btissenherz's band was granted permission to give a free concert In Circle or University Park, every Saturday afternoon.

BOARD OF ALDERMEN.
At the regular session of the Blard of Alderman, last evening, the bond of Peter Routler for building the hospital addition was approved and a motion to reconsider was defeated. Tbe State ditch ordinance was referred to the committee on finance and judiciary, and the ordinance requiring the assistant physicians at the dispensary io pay Into the city treasury all money collected for services, was stricken from i he files. Several ordinances were passed, including the one for the raising of the grade of East street lu the vicinity
of Pogue’s run.
The amendments to the street rail yay or dlnance were passed, requiring the track to be even with the surface of the sireet; lhat all gutter crossings shall be properly bridged and kept In repair; that tbe company tliill pay an amount equal
to the proportion that nine feet bears to t he whole width of the road where Improvements are made, and in proportion to eighteen feet where there are double track*. Tbe company was also ordered to remove all
T rail in use within sixty days.
The action of the council in orderly the removal of the arches In Pogue's Run beneatb the Eagle machine works was ap-

Amusement*
At the Grand Opera house to-night. Frank Mayo, ably supported, will open In his beautiful play of “Davy Crockett,” a backwoods drama of pleasing and taking parts. It will be repeated to morrow night, but no matinee will be given. To-morrow night at Lyra ball, one of the most pleasing entertainments of tbe entire season Is promised, for the benefit of the Home for Friendless Women. The principal features will be the cradle songs of all nations, sung in costume and character by tbe following ladles: Spanish, Mrs. Hammond; Italian, Mrs. Levering; Indian, Mrs. Schufman; Hungarian, Mrs. Morrison; Danish, Miss M. Blake; German, Miss Newcomer. The entertainment will close with the American cradle-song. The cradles were painted by Walter Palmer,of Albany,N. Y. The charity is a moat deserving one. At tbe Wigwam rink to-night the last fancy dress carnival will take place. The opening march Is expected to be especially brilliant, as each skater will carry a Chinese lantern, and the whole will be illuminated with colored lights. The May-pole skate will be another feature. Mr. Walter B Rogers, cometlst, and Miss. Abromet, vocal; 1st, will furnish the music. Valuable prizes will be given. An admission fee of 25 cents will be charged. To morrow evening at the Park rink there will be another fancy drees carnival and lance tournament, and an elaborate program has been arranged. The champion skater. Robert E. Morningstar, will appear each evening. The Dime museum Is still attracting large audiences. Performances are given hourly, afternoon and evening. A One-Sided Game. The base ball season wes opened here yesterday in tbe presence of twelve hundred spectators, and the home team easily defeated the St. Louis Reserves by a score of 17 to 5. The feature of the game was the bard batting of Kerlas and Thompson, who made a base bit every time they went to the bat. McKeon, phllllps and Peltz also did good work with the bat There was no exhlhitiOR of fielding, as the visitors were unable to make but five hits, The sport w«w too oac-sided to be interesting, and the crowd diminished one half before tbe game dosed.
