New York, July j7.—The eiecntiye co nmittee of the Westera Unioa Telegraph eomptmy will meet to-morrow, aad a p lUlioa of the operatiyM will thea be brought to ita couaideratiou. Oae of the officers of the company said to-day it wits iupotaitle to say what aotioa would be t ikea. The gcaeral opiuioa wm that the demud wm execuire aad uareaeoaable. No actioa hM yet beea takea by the Mutual Uaioa, Americaa Rapid or B AO. Co Demands at the Operators New York, July 17.— When the com-, mitteo of the telegraphers preeeated tha memorial to Oea. Eckert, yesterday, they were a«ked if they repreaeuted the employee of the Westera Unioa company. They answered '‘yes,” but upon examiag the papers the officers found ao list of employts. The committee said they could aot furnith such a list, m it would take time to prepare it aad they were here uader expense. They were told the company did aot recognise the committee, aad would (xpeot a list of such of its employes m desired to be represented bv the committee. It is understood this list is being prepired. The following was the memorial: Sec L Believing that a mao’s physical snd mental welfare required that at least one day m ieven be accorded him fdr rest and recitation. we request teal abjliilon of Sunday work ss compulsory duty unless compensated as extra terriers. Increase asked for Morse operators. Sec. 2. That working hours of whaatstone operators be the same as Morse operators. A similar memorial and petition wm presented to the Baltimore A Ohio Telegraph company at Baltimore, aad Rapid Telegraph company, this city. Among those to whom the demands were submitted were Mr. Walter P. Phillips, general manager of the united press. The executive committee waited oa him at his office aad made known their grievances. The geatlemaa, replying to the delegation, raid: “The stren^rn, prosperity Md the growth of the United Press Miociatioa depends too largely upon the telegraphic employes for him to hesitate a moment in saying that hs should ex peetto pay the standard salaries for the bigh order of ability his work required, aad to be governed by tbe same rules aad regulation* that applied to other purchasers of telegraphic labor." Tbe Herald's Opinion. New York, Jaly 17.—The Hera d editorially says of tbe threatened striae of the Brotherhood of Telegraphers 'that, al* though their petition is coached in respectful terms, it leaven the impression of asking too much. It rtquests that a days’ work be made eight instead of nine hours, aids Eight’s work seven instead of eight, a reducuoa of oas aiath ia oas ease and eighth in another. At the same time it wants all wages iaorsased 15 per cent irrespective of age skill, or position of the operator, besides extra compensation for Saaday work. The real effect of than* demands will be beat Illustrated by an example: day operators receive, say $75 per month, or, counting aiae hoars to a day and six days to a week, about thirtyfive oeata par hour. Under tha proposed rata, monthly wages will be $86.25; day work will be eight hoars daring six days ia the week, or about forty-fir# oeata per hoar, an actuil iaeiaaie of more than 27 per cent, fa regard to the Wheatstone operators, aa iaereaie of G5 per esaL ia demanded for them. Oa tha whole, it may bn doubted whether the operators have presented a ‘ wag issue by the course taken. Report*4 Compromise False. New Y’ork, Jnlv 17.—Western Union officials sum that the telegrams published in this morning’s papers, purporting to come from two directors of the Western Unioa oomparty, aad advising a compromise, warn forgeries. No such dispatches have beea received.

An Operator's Opinion. (cnicaaoRews.] “There ie a grant deal of speculation indulged ia by the Wester Uaioa m to how our brotherhood will msnage to sub list during a prolonged strike," said a member of the brothmheod. “As the company knows but too well how dependent we are upon the small salaries which they pay tu, sad have reason to suppose that w* are very poor, a prominent Western Union i fficisJ hM estimated that it would coat the brotherhood $200,000 per week to stand out. THE SITUATION HBHB.
Oosstp Over tbe Threatened Strike—
Tela from Moth Hides.
There is considerable uneMineis ia business circles over the threatened strike among the telegraphers, for were it to come, and be prolonged any great length of time, disMtrous consequences would naturally result therefrom. Yesterday, as ia well known, the executive committee of the Brotherhood laid their waste before General Eckert, at New York, aud a poMibln strike will largely depend upon tha an* ture of hie reply. The situation is serious, although If. D. Bntler, local mteager for the Western Union, said Ust evening, “that tha sitaatiea hers is nothing like the printed reports make it appear. Only about one half of the operators here baloag to tha brotharhood, aad by far the better half caa bn relied upon by the company in case of a strike. Very few of the old operators ate members of the orgaaizstioa, which ia made op largely of the younger and more inexperienced of tbe craft, and under such circumstances they are without the ad vice aad oool judgment which they are so much in need of ia times like the present. A strike by the brotherhood would act seriously in jura the business of the company at this place, which is geographically and ia point of wire facilitiee a very im portent one. The report that thedxecutiva oommittee presented their requests to the general officers of the com pa ay without a threat argera wall for their good seas*, and seems to be well appreciated by tee
members here."
A bob unionist says, ia connection with the pending trouble, that the members of tbo brotherhood who have tbe greateet burdens to bear are nedoubtedly thoee employed by railroad companies. They are rr quired to work twelve hoars a day, aad frequently more, with no compensation for extra services, aad at half or twothirds the salaries paid by tha telegraph companies for seven to aiae hoars’ work n day. Ia his judgment the Brotherhood should work to inenaae their pay to some thiag like the salariM paid by the Westera Uaioa, befora peraiattag lathe demand for a still farther advaaee from the Westera Uaioa. The local managers report that only eighteen of the forty employes of tho Western Union ia this eity are members of tho Brotherhood, and ia case of a strike the oomptay cea count apoa tha service of 22 regular operators, besides four or five expert mea at preeeat detailed in other departments whoee service* eaa bo utilized in cum tha emergency arises. A member of the Brotherhood remarked today, ia reply to this, that all the operators, save five chiefs, are withla the Brotherhood, mad he adds “What matters if tha manager hM a sufficieat number to eoatiaue busiaeso, provided the officM at other points eaaaot bo moaned. They might call till doomsday aad aot got a reply." It any bo remarked that both sides a this controversy express ao fsar m to
