When 'he senatorial fight began Palmer was one of Ferry’s adherenta, and aa long aa the senator waa In the field. Palmer would not allow his name to be naed. When Ferry wa* withdrawn. hto strength was divided Between Palmer and Btorkbridge. Palmer's election is, therefore, a victory for Ferry's friend*. The opposition to Palmer came from the faction of the party which demanded a change in tbe system of dispensing federal patronage. The election of Palmer means the perpetuation of the old regime, and tbe consequent continuation of the fight which threatens the disruption of the party.
