, jura’ imprisonment. It U generally admitted that the aentenee was too serere. i The state had proposed to submit the case ! to the court with agreement (or fire years’ imprisonment. Daniel W. Johnson, mayor o! Seymour, was standing near an anril in a blacksmith , shop there, when he was struck in the right thigh by a chip of steel which flew frem the nammer. The metil entered the leg to the depth of several inches, and has not been extracted. While rabbit-hunting near Coiambus, yesteiday, David W’oesner was using his shot gun aa a walking-stick over the icy ground, when it was discharged, the load l asaing up hia arm and tearing ot! nearly all the front part of his face and one jawbt ne. He is still alive, bat with no hope of recovery. Jchn Thomas, formerly of Princeton, this state, an old and wealthy citi/ in ol Lincoln, Illinois, committed suicide yesterday, by shooting hiuise 1 /in the head while he was in bed, reeu'ting in instant death. Protracted noknes* leading to temporary insanity is mpp ised to be the ceuae. The sllair bes created a profound aeneatioB. At a special meeting of the Tippectnoe county commissiioners, held on Thursday a report was submitted m the matter of the county's claim against P. P. Culver. After a numbi r of deductions, the amount due the county i* stafed.by the report to be $:,0C;>u:‘. This sum is made up of fee? claimed by the commiwioners to have been collected without warrant of law, Mr. Culver denies the validity of the claim and refuse* to settle. The surviving soldiers of the late war who refioe in Owen enuaty, have decided to erect a monument to the memory of their fellow comrades at Spencer, and to this end they have selected a design drawn by Mr. J. W. May Cann, recently of Boston, to whom the contract for the monument has been let. When completed this will be the largest monument in the state. It will stand fifty-three feet high on a base fourteen feet square. Judge W. A. Cullen, of Uushville, has filed a claim in the Fayette circuit court, against the estate of Thomas A. Taylor, alleging that a certain portion of the said estate, amounting to over $;*,000, belonging by revision to the heirs of the deceased’s late grandmother, Mrs. Marv Harlock. The estate of Mr. Taylor has already been settled by administrator, the farm having been bought in and paid for by J. H. Claypool, and the proceeds l?oing to certain Taylor heirs in Cincinnati. C. M. Wetzel, a young attorney of Vincennes, discarded Miss Annie Stewart fur another young lady. His action frenzied the woman, and ahe has been making his life a bnrden to him ever since by following him to and fro from various places, and dogring his steps whenever he called upon his latest love. Late Wednesday night, after following him some distance, they began to quarrel, aud he pounced upoa her and beat her with a cane, cutting and bruising her in a frightful manner. She is seriously injured. Her attorney will file a complaint against Wetzel as aoon as she it able to assist him.

rNCLE RIFIS'S SCHEME. The Yellowstone Park Lease-Anxiety to Sign the New Form. Washington, January 20.—The corre spondence on the Yellowstone park matter, g.ven to the senote, opens with s letter from Secretary Teller to the superintendent of the park, which shows that the lease prepared by the assistant secretary was quite diflerent from that the secretary had in mind. Instead of excluding all natural wonders and mineral springe from the lease, and confining the tract leased to twenty acres, aad when near the natural cuiiositiee, springs, etc., to only enough ground to accommodate the buildings, the Rufns Hatch lease embraces seven tracts of 640 acres, each embracing many of the wonder*, springs, etc. The letter also shows that in April, 1882, Secretary Teller was opposed to granting lessen, with the same condition* which were contained in the leases that were subsequently made by Mr. Joslyn, as acting secretary of the interior, with resp?ct to which the present controversy arises. The Duse of the Park has been amended in accordance with the report of the senate committee on the subject, and is now waiting the action of cosgress. The new form ef lease provides that others are to have the right to open hotel* or engage in the business of providing accommodations for tourists. As the best sites are al ready picked out by the parties now negotiating, others will have to take whatever is left. The contract which Assistant Secretary Joslyn signed does not, that official say*, commit the government in any way, but was merely aa agreement to prepare a lease. No lease will be made pending lfgis : ation. Should congress fail to acton the matter at this session, Assistant Secretary Joslyn gives it as hia opinion that the interior department is authorized by Jaw to lease to whomsoever it pleases. The original company have sppoved of the new form of lease, and are ready and anxious to sign it. PRINCETON COLLEGE.
I»r. McUosh to Betlre from the Presi-dency-General McClellan His Probable Successor. Washington, January 20.—There has been some talk for several mouths past of the retirement of the venerable Dr. McCosh from the presidency of Princeton College. Under his faithful management this splendid university has gained the confidence of the Presbyterian church, and has been so richly endowed as to place it on au enduring basis, with the best equipment attainable. Princeton pensions ner retired presidents for life, so Dr. McCosh will be comfortably provided for. It is more than probable that his successor will be General George B. McClellan, if he will consent to accept. The salary is $10,000 a year, with a supurb home. The position is one which requires administrative ability rather than scholarship, but General McClellan combines both. There is no finer disciplinariarin in the country, as attested by his organization and training of the army of the Potomac, the finest army, its number considered, the world probibiy ever saw. Whether he would accept,if the position was tendered him, of course be could not be expected to say until the tender has been made, but there is no doubt his name has been favorably canvassed for
the succession.
The Newball Hotel Fire. Mii.wai khk, January 20.—Since the discovery of the fact that Soheller disposed of a large part of his stock, the excitement regarding the prisoner is growing. Six barrels of whisky secreted by him have been attached by creditors. The authorities refuse positively to let the prisoner be seen or to give information regarding the evidence, out the remarks of the police leave people to infer that they have positive evidence to substantiate the charge made against the prisoner. The Sentinel publishes, to-day. diagrams of the hotel, giving the name; of every occupant of the rooms, from lists made up by the son of the landlord and the chief clerk. They give the following totals: Guetts saved, C2; employes saved, 33; guests lost, 25; employes lost, 34; total lost, 5‘J. The list made up by the Associated Press agent c rntains 102 names who are reported sared, seven more than the Hentinel’s list. The latter gives 154 inmates, while the previous statements footed up 177. Twelve more persons are reported saved who did not room at the hotel.
