An examination of the law known as the Van Vorhia bill, shows that the pronsion making membera of the city council or board of aldermen ineligible for other eity, county or township office, is a anility, and for that reaaon it was omitted in the retision of the statutes. Had Dowling known this in time, perhaps Liizsnberg wouldn’t have been so prominent in

THK PROFESSOR AT THE GRAND, “The Professor,” one of the brightest of
light plays drew go.-d house* yesterday. Mr. Gillette has created a character that ia worthy of long life upon the stage, aud has builded around it a simple, pure aud and fascinating comedy, that does not depend upon heart rending incidents or criminality for the interest it awakens in the spectator. The plot is not so intricate as to require close attention to unravel it, but it serves to introduce a number of beautiful ladies, some tiae scenery and mauy laughable situations aud iscidents. The parts are all well taken, but the Professor himself and his best girl are the main points of attraction. Tba piece will ba played t#o more nights aud a
matinee.
KARL AT THE PARK. Gardner, as “Karl.” is a variation of Grisham, who is an imitation of Joe Emmett. The character, even iu its third dilation, ia a very funuy one. and ia well worth seeing. G trdner ia supported by Patti-Rosa, who is a very bright and pleasing actress, and there is plenty of good seenery and specialties to make an evening of pleasant enterta-nmenL Tne piece will be played to night and to-morrov afternoon and evening. Fast Hog Catting. In making some recent explorations into tbe history of the manufactures of the city a News reporter learned of a feat in hog cutting, at the very outset of the pork packing enterprise, that might challenge the skill and andnranoe of the most expert cotter of these days. In 1842 Mansur A Sons were killing and peeking here for shipment to New Orleans by flu boats during the spring freshets in the river. The cutting end salting were done in a long one story frame oa the northeast corner of Meridian and Maryland streets. One Sunday when the house was fall of cooling carcases, the weather became unusually warm, and there was danger of the mr at being acriouslv damaged if not out and salted at once. Bat one hand could be found to help Mr. William Mansor, and he—a colored man—could only help» in handling. In a little over twelve hours, that day Mr. Maeaur cut up 872 hoga for saltiag. or over 20 an hour, 1 ia three miautes. Ia thote days it was a boast that a “gutter” m Cincinnati could “gut” 7 hogs a minutes, flow does that compare with the skill of our pretent big house*? Mr. Mansur say}that Henry Ward Beecher was a frequent visitor to their packing house, and an eager inquirer into the mysteries of the busin-ss. It was about that time that he edited the Indiana Farmer. County Treasurers’ Fees. The attorney general has given the following opinion relative to section 5,928, R. 8. of 1881, fixing the fees of county treasurers for the collection of onrrent tax: It was the Intention of the legislature by this recilon >o fix and provide a compensation per annum lor the county tre«surer. and such annual compensation trust be estimated oa <he basis of the total yeany ctlieeJout. MARKET REPORT. Indianapolis Wholesale Market—Dally Review. , Ttere was a brisk flutter in several lines today, always noticeable immediately following holiday trade. Regular customers were on hand to secure supplies to fill up vacancies made by Christmas trade. This was not common to all lines as the movement of merchandhe in groceries Is very light. Speculation has carried coffees up a full half cen: east. We quote at Xc advance. The marxet though quiet, Is strong. Sugars are steady aud the demand fair. Foreign fruits unchanged and active; domestic dried fruits higher, and fancy fruits scarce, Dry good* merchants are “taking stock ” and a light run of trade is locked for until the invoice is complete. Sales will depend almost wholly upon the weather. .Dry, cold weather willbiluga heavy and steady business. The iron market is weak. We quote nails at $3 40. rates for 10’s. Bar iron is not strong at quoted prices, and concessions are obtainable. Produce is comparatively quiet after the field days of last week. Eggs have weakened, and shippers pay 24c, to day. and sell at 20 jfTto Turkeys are firm at quotations, and scarce.
