THE ALPENA. Icdlcaifoes of Its Loan oa Lafosr EKIehlgaa —Ewldomees Froved to- bcrWsffiao . Chicago, October 1#—A press ear, respondent tehgraf ha from Holland, MicMgAi, this morning that a lot of camp stools^ part of the forward dick, and inside portion*; •howtog hue graining, and evidently belonging to a psceei ger eteamer, were washed aenone about one mik uorth of the harbor. A bucket ntnrked ‘The Alpena,” a spiraPstairway, and piano with the lid torn ofTwere found. Men are watching the shoro for other portions of the wreck. MouTAQfre, Mich., October 19 —The messenger sent by the associated press to Stony creek yesterday, returned at 2 o'clock this morning with the information that the reported (ahin washed ashore at that place, and supposed to be that of tbe * Aloeua,” proved to be nothing more than a small portion ol the promenade deck of the barge ‘Tradei'’ which water-logged last Monday nicht. Tbe two sections found near tbe White lake piers, and supposed to be a part of ths Alpena’s wheel rope, belong probably, to tbe irader On account of tbe drift wood aad lumber which had been thrown upon the track and laid in one endless heap six feet in height, the patrolmen considered it decidedly useless te look fnnher daring tbe night, and will therefore wait till day break, wben they will continue their search. MOB! DKBRia. Holland, Mich., October 19—A mm just in from Resturia, eight miles norib, says daring tbe night a bucket, two life preservers and a cabin door, all marked ‘‘Alpena,”came a-bore there. [Tbe steamer Alpena was built in 1856 at Marine City, to replace the Sea Bird, which bac bten kst by hre. The Alpena measured 654 tons, and was rated as A 2 Her officers were Captain N. W. Napier; first officer, J. H. Kelly; engineer, EC Polton; clerk, A. B. Haynes, and steward, W. Shepherd. The Alpera csrrerd a crew of about thirty, mostly deck hands She has heretofore borne an excellent reputation for staunch* ness, ai d was a favorite with persons who enjoyed lake trips. Her vidua was about 175,0(0. Her dimensions were: Length, 175 fee:; beam, 35 feet; 12 foothold. She was thoroughly overhauled last winter or the winter before, and was considered aa good as new. Her capacity was 509 tons. Capt Napier has been sailing oa the lakes for over fifty years, and was regarded as one of tbe most careful officers in the west. His family resides in St Joseph. Mich. When he was in Chicago, last Tuesday, he told a friend that he bad not seen his family since, last March, but expected to be with them this week. A RKMABKABLB C UNCIDBNCK. It is a remarkable coincidence that the body of Grimwood, the last balloonist, was toned on the 17th of August, 1875, at Clay Banks, Mich., by a mail terrier, and probably tbe tame one who reports having seen the bull of the Alpena floating ia tbe water off that place. Clay Banks is a postofiice in Oceana county, Michigan, about fourteen miles north of Montagae and about forty in the same direction from Grand Haven. Tbe current of the lake sets strongly from tbe southeast, in shore at Clay Banka, and much debris is cast npon the beach at that pcint The shore is cream! shaped, and as the water sets from the south rolls upon the northerly trend of the shore and forms a kind of trap for the collection of floating material.
Hampton's Ballying of Sherman, f Washington special ] Wade Hampton’s challenge of Secretary Sherman has, of course, been the talk of the town. The affair was conducted in tbe oldfasbiontd southern style. The secretary got beck from tbe west this morning, and soon after reaching his office was waited on by a stranger, who announced that he had a mssesge to deliver.' The secretary supposed it was somebody who wanted to present some papers in support of a claim for office or something of that sort, and asked him to sit down till he could attend to the matter. The stranger remained standing, however, and explained that he had a message to deliver Jrom Senator Hampton,‘‘And I desire,” he adrfcd, ‘*to call your attentton to the fact that 1 deliver the commanicatiou unseated.” The s» cretary broke tbe seal of the mysterious document, glacced it over, told the senator's friend that he would take an early occasion to answer it, aud shortly afterward wrote a reply which has been given to the
prers.
Dtn ocrats here are cursing Hampton. They thought it was bad enough to have given them away last summer by nis speech rellicg the Virginians to remember that the democratic cause was the same for which Lee and Jackson fonght, and hoped that be would keep quiet the rest of the campaign. They are naturally disgusted at his present exhibition of plantation manners and attempt to revive the code as a feature of po-
litical difcussion.
The general opinion is that Secretary Sherman comes ont of the controversy with flying colors. The affair contributed to swell the crowd which gathered in front of the secretary’s residence to tender him a serenade, and tbe hearty reception given him shows how strong a hold he has on tbe Washington public. Tribute to Secretary Sberman,
[Washington special.]
The republican tribute to toe services of Secretory Sherman, thus far in tbe campaign, under the auspices of tbe congressional committee, was one of the most complete and brilliant thiegs of the kind alternated in Washington for a long time. There was an immeLee turn ont. The square on which .he tecretary lives, sod many of the hourea, ad the park opposite, were beautifully illumioaDd The speeches were in good taste, and the reply of the secretary excellent rbt re is a g eneral feeling here that his mantf emeut of the finances and his work in the campaign have contributed largely to repubican tin cess, while many hold his work to have been better than that of any other public man.
