General Maason returned from the Chicago oonrention last night. He says the reported biitem ess with which the contest is carried on is not aa exaggeration, aad also belieres that there Is very much money used on the southern delegates. Her. B. A. An impression prevails in the best informed railroad circles here, that the fast trains recently put on sad announced for the near futnre will soon be taken off and tbe old schedule established. This is supported by tbe fact that if the war on speed is maintained, the longer lines will retaliate by reducing rates, and as tbe matter of money is a serious one to the average American, itu not difficult to tell who will be benefitted.

Use of the Belt Railroad.

At no time siooe the completion of the

Belt rood has the I., O. A or its successor,

the 0., I., St. L. k C. road, under the

ment of M. E. Ingalls, — J tbe purpose of transferrin

managemade use of it for

« ; , g through freight around the city, although it was built from the I., B. It W. crossing to North Indianapolis, three miles, including a river bridge, to accommodate th* I., 0. A L. alone. Mr. Ingalls hauls his long freight trains through the city aud over the Union tracks, which the other roads pay to keep up, and their managers are becoming restive. It costa more to transfer the car* around the belt than threugh the city, bot believing that it would prove beneficial to the citixens, by relieving the streets of long trains and tedious stops at the numerous crossings, they agreed to bear the increased expense. Now, by the refusal of ;the 1.0. A L. to adopt the same course, the object of the belt road is threatened with defeat, as it is rumored some of the other lines will not use it unless the I. C.ScL. does. The city has a large interest in the matter, and some influence should be brought to bear that will maintain the road

in snceeSsfnl operation.

m/vftujgft The records of the U nited Stot es court today show the compromise of an important patent ease. The Holly manufacturing company, of Lock port, New York, sned Samuel and James P. Cummings, of Newport, Ky., for Infringement of patent on street fire hydrant, by selling a number to tbe city of South Bend. The agreement upon which the compromise was made and salt dismissed revs that each party shall manufacture and sell their respective fire hydrants without interference from the other, and all opposition and litigation and right of action shall cease, except such as arises in the usual competition of trade. # Midnight Marauders. Doug Bell, an employe of Gates A Fray’s hvery stable, bad his room broken into the other night, and a salt of clothes, watch and pair of boots stolen, all of the value of about $80. He believes that a trotting-hone robber is the guilty party, inasmuch as he had been hanging abont the stable for some days, and was thoroughly acquainted with all the surroundings. In addition to this, the old clothes of the suspected person were found back of bis boarding house the next morning, and he has not been seen since. Efforts are being made to apprehen# the thief, and with some prospects of success. Supremo Court. The following cases were decided to-day. Abstracts will be published to-morrow. 1867. The /Mioiif it will be remembered, was to recover possession of three pieces of valuable property mortgaged by his “oUMf. Melissa E. His attorneys claim that under the rating of Judge Drummond, the case was in good shape, and but for unforeseen circumstances would have resulted successfully. A year ago, the 31st of May, Downiest interest in the property was sold on execution, the judgment being for • u ? 1 °* , $1,475. or thereabouts. He failed to make arrangements to redeem, aud sow F. Fast Time Come Agate Some More. Constantly accelerated speed is being made on passenger trains under the erase for fast travel Hereafter the fast train on the 0.1. St, L. A 0. road .will wait for the Vandalia bain, enabling passengers to make the run from St. Louis to Cincinnati, 353 mihe in ton hours and fifteen minutes. An unfortunate issue will almost certainly come out of this erase for fast running. The rpftds which cannot oompete with rivals in the matter of time will do so by catting rates. Already the^are indications of nnsettiing pools aU ewer the west Then will inevitably come a redaction of rates, just as the road* were getting in it condition to pay good wagai to the employes. Despite this fact, which most be self-evident, the train men themselves ere the moat ardent advocates of a high rate of speed. >
