The Sorcerer is not as good aa opera as I’inafore, though it abounds in good light music, and the libretto is full of good points. The parts were well taken throughout, with no particularly resplendent star. Tke chorus was not strong, but was well managed and supported by intelligent orchestral backing. Miss Lillian Brooks-Bell, as Aline, sings well and acts admirably. Misi Clara Burton, as Constance was also good, and was frequently applauded. Mrs. Flora Barry has appeared before an Indianapolis audience btfore. She sang here in oratorio with Whitney and Mrs. Smith. She has a sweet and powerful voice, and sang the part of Lady Sangazure well. Of tie male characters, Mr. Dtgby's “Sorcerer” was perk*)* tke best. His acting was very spirited and hid vocalization good. Mr. Cooper's “Dr. Daly” ranks next, with Mr. Renilz’s '‘Sir Marmaduke,” and Mr. Pfau’s "Alexis” following closely. The Turkish music between the acts was loudly encored, it has baan well played here several times before without receiving special applause, applause, hut that was before it was famous. To night the favorite of all the operas, particularly among those persons who love sweet and simple music and are not educated up to the faulifindiutr point, ‘ The Bahamian Girl,” will be played, and to morrow night, “Pinafore.” Both these pieces will require the best efforts of the company “The BohemiaaGirr’ has often been played here by traveling companies, and “Pinafore” has been produced by three excellent companies within the last eight months. It will require something better than “journey work” to please an Indianapolis audience in
the^e operas.
TUB 0ATI.BR COM HI) Y COM PAST. The entertainment giren at the Grand opera bouse last evening by the Gayler com-
edy company was a delightfully enjoyable one. The drama of “8'ar, or paste and diamonds” has little plot, being for the most
part a thing of shreds and patches, but it gives untrammeled play for tne showing of the versatile accomplishments of Miss Mattie Vickers, a charming soubrette, who has a dash axd vim and piquancy that remind! old play goers of Maggie Mitchell’s Fanchon in its first days. She has a fine figura, a clear, full voice, and her comical and extravagant imitations of Modjeska, Aimee and other actresses and singers are intensely amusing. 8he does the Berio-comic song and dance lady of the variety stage in a way that movee, irresistibly, to uutoarous laughter by means of its delightful exaggeration, though in the few pathetic pas-ages of the play she shows almost equally well as in her special delineations. “Paste and Diamonds” ia put together something after the style of “Patchwork” the specialty of Salsbury's Troubadours, to enable the company to show their varied accomplishments; the former, however, is somewhat broader and has le>s finish than the latter. Charles Rogers is quite as good in his imitations as Miss Vickers is in hers. His Hamlet, as done by the “Pride of Shelby ville," was immense; his Rip Van Winkle had Jefferson's voice to the minutest inflection. Miss Dollie Thornton as the “leading lady of the Folly theater” was capital; “We Want our money, don’t we, Fido,” brought down the house. Wood Bensou as “Phineas Fiamm, manager of the Felly theater,” was also good. The performance may be called of the variety order, but is an admirable setting with all the variety merit* and none of its abuses and indelicacies. The play will be given each night during the
wetk, vsilhthe usual matinees.
