National Finances. $
[Washington aperffil to Clnrinnaid Commercial.] V To-day was the last of the fiscal year, And treasury officials were busily engaged in getting up th# annual statement of finances of the government. The receipts of the rear frona internal revenue were about $ ILL500,. ( 00, which is an increase of fct.fiiXXOOO over tbe amount ef last year’s receipts. This shows an improvement in.the Kusmeta condition of the country, particularly as during the year the tax on Tobacco has been reduced
tight cents per imund.
The receipts for. to-day, the lust in the fiscal year, amounted to $638,085, the largest received in a single day for a great while. The gain in internal revenue receipts is largely due to tbe more thorough ’ enforcement of
the laws in the south.
Tbe recepti from customs this year will be about $126,000,000, an increase of nearly $6,000,000 over the previous year, which also shows an improvement in busiae*. ncularly wb.cn it is taken i- CJn8idei :J? 0 r a . .... .ue fact that the balance of trade is larger this year in our favor by many mill-
ions than ever before. *
- The total increase in the Revenues of the 'government has been about ten millions greater than the last fiscal year, while at the same time tbe expenditures hare been nearly $35,000,000 more than 4hey were during the previous year. This is because of the lavish appreparutiotis of the democratic congress, and* for this reason the redu< tion of the public debt during the month has been insignificant. Of tbe extraordinary expenditures five and. one-half millions have been paid out ion account of arrears of pensions, a similar amount on account of the Halifax fisheries awaid, and about two millions to Captain Ka<b for bis work on the jetties of the Mi&fit-

CIVILIZATION'S COMPLEXITY. The Variety of Lands and Labor Uepreaented at a Breakfast Table. A recent number of the London Telegraph calls to mind tbe wonderful exhibitions of. human onerRy and ingenuity that appear rath morning upon the breakfast table of a • Londoner. Tbe tea he drinks comes from tbe far off land of Cathay ;J>r, it may be from India or Assam; his coffee is the productlcitbe strange eastern/port known as Mocha, on the shores of the^fted sea; for his tardine^-bipslbave been chartered in the Mediterranean; his bacon has probably been rented in Canada or the western slates; the cane of the sugar he delights in has not long before waved in the tardy breezes of the Indies; bis preserves sire made from the fruits of tbe tropics; the currants that till his cake have been gathered on tbe shores of Gnece.and the beef, which mal.es his meal substantial, has, in all probability, grazed in Holland, or in tLe farther pastures of the western world. Almost every race, certainly c-nch- of the four continents, has been 'aid under frihute. Ships, trains and carat uxg have been set in motion;' the soil-tillers ! ve been invited to industry in the rem/test corners of the earth, and counflesa people have been • employed, in order that he tray have a satisfactory morning repafet. Long acquaintance with such luxurious wealth has, however, had the effect to make him undervalue these resources. To him the thought of the Arabian desert wanderer, with the camel loads of coffee, or the negro laborer in sugar mills, the Cingalese peasant or the Chinese tea-grower, seldom or never ccmes. He has been so continually used to the possession of the treasures which their art and toil supply, that the wonderfulbreakfast he eat? is regarded with no aurpibe, and scarcely worthy of a passing remark. . j Tha massing of Labor. [Atlantic Monthly.] I believe that for most men more than eight hours’ work per day are required lor the maintenance of physical, mental and moral health. I think that for most men, including alteratives, mechanics, farmers and Clergymen, more than eight hours' labor per ere • neceeeary, in order to keep down and L’ijize the forces of the animal passions. I believe that if improvements in ' machinery should discharge men from the necessity of laboring more than six hours a day, society would rot in measureless and fatal animalism. I have worked more than ten hours a day during most of my life, and believe it is the beet for ns all to be compelled to work. It would be well, I think, if we could make it impoeeibld far an idler to live .on the face of tie earth. Religious teachings are not without the responsibility for having taught that the neceegity of labor is a curse. Tbe world owes most of its growth hitherto to mea who tried to do as much work as they could. Its debt is small to the men who wished to do ae little as possible.
