€ITY NEWS. 4 Fenons leaving town for the season, and Summer travellers, can hare The Daily News mailed to them, postpaid for fifty cents per montb, the address being changed as often as desired. The new mill of Gibson & Co.’s will be put in operation next week. It has a capacity for 500 Ijarrels a day. Elder Moses Broyles will repeat his lecture on Colored Americans this evening at the irecond Oaptist ceurcb. George T. Powell and J. D. Tinnedge will return.Irom California in a few tveeks to make Indianapolis their homo. When the counril gets ready again to move the west market, it will be asked to telescope it on the corner of Washington and Missouri streets. The Union railroad transfer and stockyards company is assessed at. $2pG,240 by the state board of equalijiatiocf, and the Union railway company $129,200. A disreputable dance held in the rear of a doggery opposite No- 6 engine house on West Washington street, was broken up by the police last night, the attendants dispersing in. most admired disorder. The proposed slate military* encampment haring fallen through, the Russ rifles will give a grand dress parade on next Monday. The German veterans, Caiitain Kern commanding, will accompany them. Governor Williams has, since the recent exposure of his pardon record, concluded to give the public a statement of the reasons for every pardon granted, instead of waiting till the legislator* meets to make on accounting in this respect. . Officers Stewart and Barker yesterday recovered nearly $50 worth of jewelry stolen .from Mrs. Messing by a servant girl a few days ago. They “recovered’’ the jewelry why did thev not at the same time (< recover' the thief ? The police seem to have fallen into the detective system of doing business. Last November Bob Smith, the notorious gambler in charge of Chapin & Gore’s combination pool deadfall, was fined in the city court for professional gaming, and appealed the case to the criminal court, George Leggett being his security on the appeal bond. The case has never been set down for trial and is still unassigned. Can Prosecutor Heller tell the public why this public violator of the law is afforded such immunity in the court. The wife of Winston P. Noble, now living St Altofl, Illinois, had filed a deed of disaffirmance in the recorder’s office here stating that from May 1857 until October 1858 before she became of age, *he executed titles to property in Abie’s subdivision between Winston, Davidson, Market and Michigan Streets also to outlets 67, 68 and 69. These acts she now, after a lapse of nearly 21 years, declares null and void because of her minority. Rook' Notice. MCPHERSON’S HAND BOOK OF POLITICS. By Hon, Edward McPherson. Washington; -Solomon’* A Chapman. Indianapolis; The Daily Journal office. McPherson’s hand book has so long held an established place in political' literature thataioticc of a new volume can only enumerate Some of the main heads of its contents, leaving the accuracy, clearness and thoroughness ot the work to be understood, the character of its author, being a better voucher for this than newspaper certification.* The hand book for 1878 gives a careful record of congressional acuon on the _ presidential contest of 1876, together with official facts showing the relation *he administration to the disputed states. Much of this matter is new and correspondingly interesting. The action of the fortyfifth congress on the financial question in all its various phases is given, together with its action on the tariff and on Pacific railroad legislation. There are judicial decisions on political questions and the constitutional amendments proposed in congress, which are ffiven as showing the drift of public opinion in the various states whence the amendments have emanated. Th* statistical matter of the , volume is unusually rifch in topics. A complete index gives a clue to all the facts in the volume.
