A BIRD'S STRATEGY. A Strolling Reporter »*•* a Contest Bettvrrn at r*»r of Woodpecker*. Yesterday morning, as the strolling reporter of The News was lounging along McCarty’s lower levee, he saw one of the oddest "little bird tights that eveaUinstrtlted the annals of pugnacity. The thought tceable bird, n ly head he flaun and weathersr The s. r. has seen four or live at once on an old stump peeking away as noisily as that celebrated by Tom Moore for “disturbing solitude by tapping the hollow beech tree,” and they would circle about the trunk, some one way some another, but always keeping their distances faithfully and showing as little appearance of ill temper as a half dozen old Quaker ladies at meeting. But he was undeceived by the scene of yesterday. A small, slender and apparently dyspeptic woodpecker, evidently a woodpecker of inferior muscle, lit on a mullen stalk and began picking the gnats and bugs oat of the yellow blossoms. But he appeared apprehensive, and- every moment or two would stop and look off. one side or the other or over hia shoulder behind him. In a minute or two it appeared that he was not without good reason for his apprehensions, for a big, burly, square-shouldered woodpecker, with an extra brush of blood on his scalp, lit on the oppsite side of the same mullen stalk, and began picking furiously, not at the bugs in the blossoms, but at the feeble little fellow on the other side. It was as mean a case of cowardly bullyintr as the s. r. ever saw. The little fellow stood up to him though, and fought back pluckily but vainly for several rounds. Then heappiearedtogetone onthe “nob” that knocked him off the stalk, and he fell fluttering nearly to the ground, but recovered before striking and flew rather lamely Off to a stump, a hard, seasoned oak, in which there was no more chance for a worm or bug than there is in a section of a steam boiler. Here he began pecking away very busily, frequently turning his head to look at the bully who had “jumped his claim” on the mullen stalk. Whether he was afraid of being disturbed again, or wanted to draw his enemy to the stump by an appearance of a “fat take, the s. r. was soon allowed to discern. The bully seeing the active jacking of his bitter antagonist, seemed to leeNupre of a better thing there than where he was, and he flew straight—that is, as straight as woodpecker ever flies, which is not saying much for the scallop line he always takes—to the stump), made a blow at the little fellow, who dodged it and went back to the mullen stalk instantly. His stratagem had succeeded. The big fellow hopp>ed about, struck a lick or two and went back to the mullen to whip the littlescamp for swindling him. But the-little one saw him coming and took wing for the few green trees still standing on the river bank at that point, and left the bully alone in his glory. The litile fellow’s operation at the stamp may have been without any intent or significance ; but it really looked like a deliberate trick to cheat the bully into leaving the mullen stalk in revenge for licking him and driving him off.
