The Nebraska Tragedy.

Mr. 8. Mitchell, deputy collector of intAerual revenue for this district, returned home this morning from North Vernon, where he has been in attendance upon the preliminary examination of John Shaffer and Bade Jackson upon the charge of murdering Shafl'er’s wife, who was Mitcheli’a /Tniece. The general facts in the case are known by the readers of The News, but the testimony adduced very materially strengthens the suspicion of murder against Hade Jacdson. It was shown that Mrs Shaffer was shot from the outside of the shed where her hotly was found, the powder-burned planks of the shed

A Bankrupt’s Inconvenience. One of the fashions of the season is to file a petition in bankruptcy, and then rush off to some watering place to spend the summer. A bankrupt, whose examination was set for a certain day not long iince, told the register he could not be present then, as he was going with his family to Niagara, Saratoga and other resorts, and it would be extremely inconvenient for him to break the arrangement. His creditors, who were striving to earn enough to keep their families in comfort at heme, were so overcome with the coolness of th® statement, that notwithstanding the sultry weather they required overcoats in his presence. Unmistakable Identification. • While in New York some time ago Gen. Dan. Macauley had occasion to call on the banking house of Winslow, Lanier & Co. to cash a draft. He was about to fail in getting the money from inability to establish ms identity with his signature, when it occurred to him that they had some city bonds signed by him as mayor. The documents were brought out, signatures compared and the draft : paid. The general’s sign manual is as unvarying as a stereotype.
