There is now a story that Carlotta’s insanity was produced by a poisonous herb administered to her by a Mexican woman in whom she had placed great confidence. Joseph Jefferson, the actor, who is also a votary of the brush and easel, is about leaving Colorado for a sketching tour of six weeks in the Yosemite valley of California. William H. Milburn, the well known “blind preacher,” who was at one time chaplain in congress, has just returned to the United States, after a long preaching and lecturing tour in Europe. Ex-Secretary Fish told an interviewer tl at he was entirely out of politics and had turned farmer. “Look at my hands,” and he showed some hard looking blisters upon the palms of his hands, “that’s what haying and plowing does.” Dr. David Creel, who recently died in Chillicotbe, Ohio, was one of the jurors in the famous Aaron Burr treason trial. Dr. Creel, at the time. he was summoned to Richmond, was a resident of Virginia and a near neighbor of Blennerhassett. There has been such an increase in the number of bald-heads in all the American cities that the business of wig-making has been reduced to very small proportious in the last 10 or 15 years. Formerly wigs were worn that men might not appear *ld, but now so many are bald that little is cared about it. A Brooklyn merchant who returned from the reaside yesterday found himseli called upon somewhat unexpectedly to exercise the duties of host. In his absence two of the gentlemen of the jimmy had established themselves in his dwelling, sampled his wine Cellar and taken possession pf his bedroom, where he found them dreaming the happy hours away. It was fMuirjjrire party all around.—[New York Some parties from New York have partly identified John Doe, the Cincinnati forger, as one of the persons concerned in a great New York forgery some time ago. If Richard Roe could be found he could fully identify John, for surely after their protracted litigation of the last few hundred years they could not mistake each other. John Doe committed a fatal mistake when he went to forging and abandoned his custom of ejecting Richard from everybody’s premises.—[Courier-Journal. A New York clergyman sat in a chair to be shaved. The artist began: “Who shaved you? Have your hair cut? Try a bottle of our trycophegua? Have a shampoo?” The clergyman turned to the barber and said, “Let nle up, if I have got to say my catechism I prefer to say it sitting up. But 1 came here to be shaved.” The same gentleman was met on the stairs of a large building and a lady said to him, are you the janitor?” “No, madam, are you the charwoman?” Out of breath with astonishment the lady hastened away. Alter two years of untiring aud careful search, the successor of the dalal lama, the I>ope of Buddhism, has been discovered and crowned. The grand lama, who resides at Lhasa, Thibet, died two years ago, and it devolved on a council «f lamas to ascertain on whom the spirit of Jhe dalal had passed, and to crown him. The sessions of the council are secret, and the manner of making a selection is shrouded in mystery. The choice, it is known, has fallen on a child, as is usually the care, who be comes the potent ruler of 400,000,000 persons. Great Consumption of Ice. [Virginia (Ner.) Enterprise ] The heat in the California and Consolidated Virginia mines is at present so intense, and the demand for ice so great that the consumption of ice amounts .to 96 pounds per day per man. The'heat in great part is caused bv the unavoidable obstruction of the draft in the Consolidated Virginia shaft by the platforms on which the men stand while engaged in retimbering. The heat in the lower levels is also aggravated by the heat on the surface.
