Horlburt to induce him to play the Chi-cagc-lndianapolis games here, but without success. However, he would accept the Pittsburg proposition for the ProvidenceIndianapolis series. For a reply a letter was very soon mailed to Mr. Pettit in which he was" informed that he could do m be pleased about playing the Providence or any other games here 5 as for any business relations with the parties from whom fhe proposition had been marie, none could now be consummated. In short, the signers of the letter would have nothing to do w ilh the Indianapolis nine.

Good Old Flat. To the Editor of The Indianapolis News: I enclose you a sample of the “fiat” money that the “nationals'’ here propose to issue “direct to the people.” You will see that the note enclosed has 3 on one side and X on the other, but that makes no material diffierence—the note is irredeemable, and the question of denomination can be settled between payer and payee. If you are “short” let me know, and I can loan you a dry goods box full of this money, and you can pay it back whenever you get ready. You may thjnk that I am exceedingly flush, so I am. These times remind me of when we paptured Montgomery, Alabama, and found in the state house several dry goods bores full of confederate money. After that the boys were very reckless in playing poker. I have seen them betting as high as $500,000 at a clip. They used to carry their money in cavalry horse nosebags. Upon one occasion I saw one soldier bet a nose-bag full, and his opponent saw that nose-bag and raised him two more. When we get our “fiat” money these good old times will be brought back to us. I can not blame the nationals here for wanting plenty of money. Their candidate for representative is on the verge of bankruptcy; their candidate for auditor is in bankruptcy; their candidate for treasurer is carrying a heavy mottgage on his farm, and so is the editor of the “national” paper. Barnes in Masonic temple yesterday afternoon. The premium badge of the Indianapolis hunting club will be shot for again in a week or teu days. The badge is now held by Mr. Bergundthal. The Marion Emerald society has elected John J. Dirtier president, Thomas McSheehy vice president, W. T. Hayes secretary, and Patrick Codnelly treasurer. John N. Clark, tobacco dealer of this city, yesterday compromised a violation of the revenue law by paying the special tax as a dealer in manufactured tobacco.

The police are on the lookout for G. McSweeney, of Taylorsville, who came to this city Monday with cjuite a large sum of money, and has not been seen siuce. The complaint against the trustees of the female reformatory, praying for an injunction to prevent them from further using Crooked run for sewer purposes, was filed in the United States court yesterday afternoon.

Yesterday afternoon a farmer Earned Williamson was thrown down the embankment at the bridge over White river, on Michigan street,, by a runaway team and severely injured. Mrs. Pybum, a well known conlectioner, was the victim of a runaway team on North Alabama street, receiving very serious injuries. A little colored boy driving the horse, was also

thrown out, but not badly hurt.

Officers Temple and Thornton quieted disturbance iu the house of James Coua ins* over the Canal on Sunday, and thi occupants yesterday procured the arrest o the officers on a charge of assault and bat tery. Justice Wright at once discharget them, .when the complainants, Jame Cousins, Sarah Cousins and Flora Cousins found themselves under arrest for assaul snd battery and disturbing the peace. Some of the Remarks Made on the Question of Selling It at Three Cents. [New York Sun.l “The difference in cost of production ten years ago and now is> not'so great as you imagine,” a jolly and intelligent druggist who had joined the party said. “I knew very well a young man who was for some time in the employ of a firm doing a very large business in the importation of glucose and glycerine. He told me that when he had to go to brewers to induce them to* try the goods of his firm some such dialogue would inevitably follow, as long as he waa a stranger to them: “Salesman—I wish tocall your attention, Mi. , to our stock of glucose and glycerine. “Brewer—What is them ? “Salesman—Substitutes to enable you to produce your beer more cheaply. I— “Brewer—No, sir. No, sir.. You come auf the wrong place, mein frein'dt. Go to such brewers as use dem things. I have no uses for anything more as good hops and malt in my beer. “Salesman—But with glucose you can very largely reduce the quantity of malt you— “Brewer—I tell you what it is: I look on a man what uses such stuffs like dem in the beer as no better as thiefs. Hops and nlalt. Dat is all what the honest brewer wants. Never in my brewery was a pound of such stuffs. “Salesman—But I have here a personal letter of private recommendation from your friend, Mr. Grabblepfennig of Pittsburgh, telling me to call on you. “Brewer—Ach! Soi That was another matter. Yes, the letter is all right. How much you ask for your glucose? I hope it was goin’ down von the last I bought.” “I would not so much object to paying five cents for a glass of beer, even for a small glass of beer,” one of the Germans said, “if for my money I could get even a little genuine old lager beer. But do you know, the word lager, applied to the beer of to-day, is a misnomer? There is no more lager. Lager means laid, kept. But beer is no more laid away and kept until it is good and healthful, as in old times. -Then the brewers could brew only in cold weather, and the bee^ when sum? mer came, had gone through its two fermentations naturally, had purged itself of all impurities, and was really a healthful and delicious drink. But, in an evil day, some devil’s imp taught the brewers how to cool their beer as it came from the kettle*, in a patent ice-house; how to force it to an artificial and ineffectual fermentation; how to arrest it beforg it could go to a second; how to use the* ‘leffelcha’ or little spoon to put a dose of bi-carbonate of soda into each keg of beer to give it a nice ‘head’ when it is tapped—and a lot more infernal knowledge of substitutes and drugs, and methods. And now the brewer brews beer every day. except Sundays, the whole year around, summer as well as winter. He sella us not lager beer, but a concoction almost warm from his kettles, a stuff that goes through its second fermentation in our stomachs, that disorders our stomochs aud bowels, and gives us kidney diseases and sick headaches.” w
