An incendiary attempt to burn the residence of II. \V. Groves, 170 Winston street Saturday uight, was discovered in time to Is? rendered futile by the owner. The state house commissioner* have deeided upon using the tiling manufactured by the eneaiistic tiling company, of this city, for the floors of the new capitol. Druggist* are talking of reorganizing the defunct pharmaceutical society with a view to building some law* regulating the qualifications of drug venders, for the next legislature. The ehurehet suffer as much from the hot weather as other branches of trade. The patronage they receive during the summer mouths docs not warrint more than half of them keeping open house. A day or two since while Judge Brouse, of Kokomo, was out riding with hi* son-in-law. A. B. Southord, Esq., a quick turn threw him out of the buggy, bruising him considerably. His injuries are not serious. Rev. Mr, Kemper preached last night at the 8mm 1 Presbyterian church to a large congregation, made up of the boys and girla of the old seminary. The text of his discourse was, “I know in whom I have lielieved.” . ‘ ^ - Number of freight cars received and forwarded at this point for the week ending at noon Saturday, 12,90b, being an in- • crease of 830 cars over the preceding week. Of these 9,891 were loaded, 5,2lo being received and 4,<>81 forwarded. Yesterday afternoon Anna Thorn, aged 19, living near the corner of Virginia avenue and BratJ^haw street, poured coal oil on a tin 1 with the usual result. Her legs and the lower part of her bixly were badly burned, but with good treatment she will recover. A weekly paper aays the city' attorney approved the bond of the citizens gas company. That gentleman answer* that be did not, but that with a majority of tbc^ judiciary committee he reported agaimt accepting the bond. Mr. BagSv submitted a minority report favoring the acceptance of the bond, which was adopted by the council. Liquid Graves Willie Mottinger, 15 years old, who lined wiih his uncle. Win. A. Bramwell, No. 291 W’est St Clair street, went bulling with other boys in the canal, near the new gas works, Saturday, night. Soon n f ter going into the water hi* companion* mined him. Search was made and the J'odv found at 11 o’clock the same night. Thomas Welsh, known as “the gauger,” took oft his hat, coat and shoes at the *aloon near the Washington street bridge «vn White river, about 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon, bade good-bye to. his companions, and adding, “Boys, I’m going to heaven,” walked into the water. Ucfore help could reach him he was drowned. Tie had been drinking all day. Welsh Was a well-known character at the station house, having been put there innunMrahle times for drunkenmss. He was called “the gauger” on account of gauging four » n ger« of whisky every time hwdrauk.

A Kidder'* ttmuineek. The other day as the I nay reporter of The News was ly'ing in the shade of u big beech a mile ortwo west of the citv, he saw what may not inaptly l*e called a spider’s hammock. It was so exceedingly delicate and gosamner like that except in certain isTtioos ami favoraldc lights it could not la* seen at all, and when fairly khmi, at a litst view it seemed to he iloatiuv in the air, fixed, but held by nothing. Ft was a perfect web, without a single broken or disordered thread, and the mo*t delicate production of the arachnoid loom the reporter ever saw. Ordinary webs are woven of threads as visible iu all posilimis as the threads of a |iiece of Venice lac •, .but these were m much tiner as a silk thrvud i* tiner thnn a clothes line. The web, instead of being polygonal, a* usual, was ainio-t perfecUy circular,“as round a* Giotto’* O. the angles at the radiatory threads being so slight as to be imperceptible to the closest scrutiny, except at one or two points. It was about five inchwi in diameter, and was formed in a band about an inch and a balk' wide about a central portion two inches wid<, the band beim; made of these wonderfully delicate thread* set as regularly as the best graduating instrument could have placed them, not more than one-twentieth of an inch apart. In- an ordinary wed the spaces between the lines are often a quarter of an inch apart, this being five times liner ihan the ordinary manufacture. The central space was spun round by threads as fine as the others, but set ten timi s as far apart, so that the effect except upon a clone view was to nnyke the Web a beautiful circular band floating immovably in the air. in the very center of this central part, however, there wa* really a hole, as round as a bullet, about half an inch in diameter, and here the weaver, a little yellow spider about as big a* a big ant, bung by his legs watching for meat. The radiating lines which were amazinglv numerous aud regular, reached only to the boundary thread of the little home-hole of the spider. They didn’t come together in a jKiint as webs usually do. But what held this elegant bit of gossamer lace in its place? It floated full three feet tnira the ground and further from the nearest limbs of the little beech under which it hung. A long thread stretched down to a weed about four feet off, and was braced by two or three “guys”extending to other weed’s. Another longer thread ran aw ay up obliquely to one of the limbs of the beech full six feet away, and was braced by a single “guy” line to a limb more directly over the web. And there it was, hung in the middle of this tei -foot suspending cord, three feet above the ground, exactly like the hammock so common now days on land;- and to complete the resemblance the beautiful, graceful gossamer lay almost horizontal, a ]>osition rarely seen in an ordinary spider’s web. As the little weaver caught sight of the lazy rejiorter, now for a moment become the curious reporter, he swung himself out. of his little hole, crossed his delicate lace band and scurried up hi# miBpcnded cord, “hand over hand,” as a sailor climbs a single rope. After gelling up about half way to the beech limb he had hung his lace house to, apparently to reflect on the cause of his alarm, and concluding in a ntonrent or two that he was more scared than hurt, he climbed back and backwards, crossed through his lace hand again, and putting first one leg and then another through the bole, he drew himself through, and there hung by hi- various limbs to the outside cord, with his body resting on the circumambient air.

Ita*e Bail. The last game between the Blues and Providence Saturday was a walk away for the latter, the score standing 4 to 0. in their favor. Ward was invincible, only two base hits being made by the Blues, and they not counting for anything. Nolan pitched well, but the Providence big men were too much for him. York made a home run, the only one ever secured on the ground where the ball did not go outside the fence. This week aud next the Blues play in Chicago, and then start east. A statement of the financial standing of the club etiectually disposes of all such atufl as the Enquirer is printing with re*i>ect to the probable disbanding, which the Cincinnatis eagerly desire. The receipts to date have been $14.69*1.25, sufficient to meet all claims, widen have been promptly paid. The rest of the season will amply take care of itself. Last week’s play reduced the club’s batting average from 255 to 247, and increased its fk Iding from 843 to 847. At present Chicago takes the lead for the first lime this season in games won, although the standing of the Bostons as re-, gams the final result is much better. Cincinnati is well up, and the race from this point will be intensely exciting.
