Persons leaving town for the season, and Summer travellers, can have The Dally News mailed to them, postpaid for fifty cents per month, the address being changed as often as desired. All unlicensed dogs will be impounded after the 20th inst. Hon. Albert G. Porter, first comptroller of the treasury, m expected here to-morrow. Temperance meetings will be held tonight in the base ball paA and In front of the court house. This weather u simply magnificenl for corn. It is growing so fast that good ears can hear it snap. Will P. Wolfe, of this city, has taken the position of city editor of the New Albany Ledger-Standard. The government will not appeal from the judgment of Judge Gresham in the whisky ring cases, decided Monday last. The United States court has directed the receiver of the I., C. and L. road to use the Belt road in making transfers of freight. John Evans and Hod. Bradford, who have been in jail for several days on charges of grand larceny, were discharged yesterday afternoon. W r . W. Wentz, late roadmaster on the I., C. and L. western division, has taken the some position on the Lafayette, Bloomington and Muncie road. Hon. D. P. Baldwin, republican candidate for attorney-general, and Rev. Mt. Pratt, of Louisville, his uncle, and brother of the late Senator, were in the city last evening. .The obituary of Joseph G. Marshal 1, the Indiana W'ebster, is published in this morning’s Journal. Mr. Marshall is dead. He has been dead for nearly a quarter of a century. ^ A bill of $691.50 has been presented to the board of county commissioners by the managers of the German orphan asylum lor the maintenance of twenty-six children the past quarter. E. B. Martindale, wife and daughter will leave for New York to-morrow morning to join Secretary Thompson's party, which is to take a jaunt up and down the Atlantic coast at government expense. . Ed. Baugh, the yonng burglar, who broke jail at Terre Haute last week, has joined the Vandalia car breakers, who have succeeded in evading arrest so far. The police are still searching for them. ’A girl named Paul has begun suit in Justice Whitney’s court against William Aierrick a south side livery stable kee|>er for bastardy. Merrick was arrested yesterday and gave bail in the sum of $800. The new safety gates erected at the Meridian street crossing of the Union railway tracks, work well and give satisfaction. It is likely that f these gates will be placed at all -the prominent street'crossings on the Union tracks. The agony over the award of the stone contract to he let August 15th, is growing so intense that a postponement of the letking till cooler weather sets in is suggested as a sort of preventive against sudden l?ick ness or death. The Freedom and Right association met night and added the iollowim? names 1o the executive committee: August Erbrich, George Knnrier, Patrick Wei * Oorge O. Griffin. The next meetii be held on the second Tuesday in The Woman’s Home Mission ^ __ Hie First Baptist church, will meet next Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock to consider the matter of sending a teacher to Selma, Alabama, to teach colored baptists at that f>lace.
The national council of wicroscopists will be held in this city, beginning August 14th, in the txmrt house. This will be the week before the meeting of the American association for the advancement of science at 8t Louis, and a large attendance is expected. Miss Sal He Bingham returned from Boston last night, where she has spent ten months cultivating her voice, a mezzo-so-prano of great power. Miss Bingham will remain here two months, and then probably go to Europe to finish her musical education. This morning at 11 o’clock Dr. M. T. Bunnells and Miss Emily L. Johnson were married at the residence of the bride’s uncle, Mr. A. G Willard, on North Tennessee street. The bridal couple left on the noon train for a trip to Pnt-in-Bay, Niagara and down the St. Lawrence. .Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Elam received a dispatch yesterday from his home in Ohio, anyouncing the dangerous illness of hi* father, and he immediately left for his bedside. In consequence of his departure the trial of Fred. Hoffman, for the murder of Jesse Noble, fixed for to-day, has been indefinitely postponed. The contract f<w building the state house sewer was awarded yesterdav to A. Bruner, at $3.40- per foot' for the five foot sewer, anti $2.90 for the four foot sewer, if Louisville cement is used; if Fayetteville cement, $.‘>.30 and $2.82 j>er foot respectively; manholes, $25; catch basins, $50. There were seven other bids. m Stoppeu by an Injunction. At the June session of the commissioners’ court the county treasurer was directed to use all possible diligence in stirring up tax-payers to make full and true returns of personal property, inaamjich as the duplicate was, showing a constant decrease in the total amount listed for taxation. Mr, Hanway put a man to work in pursuance of this order, and the result is apparent in quite a large increase of taxable property, chiefly consisting of the stocks of mineral associations. Among other item* placed on the duplicate was one of $100,000 of bonds of the Indianapolis gas light and coke company, held as art of the assets of S. A. Fletcher A Co.’s ank, upon which a tax amounting to $3,612 was assessed for the years 1875, ’76, ’77, and ’78. Yesterday afternoon an injunction wa« served on the treasurer temporarily enjoining him from proceeding to collect the tax. The case will come up for hearing at the September term of court. Other banks will probably find themselves in hot water, because of a discrepancy between the amount of deposits returned to the township assessor and the amount reported to the collector of internal revenue. No tax is assessed by the county, and by a strange coincidence the amount of deposits reported to the county is said to be from $100,000 to $200,000 larger than to the United States, where a tax of one twenty-fourth of one per cent, is assessed.
Run Over and Killed. An accident occurred at the crossing of the Pan-Handle and Junction tracks and Michigan road last evening, resulting in the immediate and horrible death of Peter Greenan, watchman at that point; As the night express on the Pan-Handle was oing out he warned approaching teams to ;eep off, and then stepped back on the Junction track just in time to be struck by a switch engine. He was knocked down lengthwise on the rail, and the engine and one car passed over him, crushing the body out of ml shape, mangling it beyond possible recognition. Greenan was an Irishman 60 years old, residing at 75 South Noble street, and leaves a wife and five grown children. ^ Jury Trials. To the Editor of The LudUnapoU* New*: The source of one of the largest items of expense in the county government is trial by jury, and under the present law it is made to bear very heavily upon the tax payers. This needs remedying, and the remedy can only be applied by the legislature. Let a law be passed providing that when a jury is asked for it shall be done in writing, the parties to the suit either agreeing that the costs shall be divided between them, or assessed against the losing side, the same as other costs are taxed. It seems to the writer that a law embodying this feature would relieve our courts of a great portion of their expense, and efleet a much needed relief to the overburdened taxpayer. Non-Professional. Indianapolis, July 3,1878.
