Officeps Kitzmiller and Williamson arrested him Hist night. This morning he was placed on trial, and defended by ('ommi?sioner Remy’s lawyer, on the ground oflnsanity. The Sunday school and parish picnic of St. Paul s cathedral will be held at Golden hill on the canal to-morrow. The state treasurer is busy paying off j udges, prosecuting attorneys and other functionaries, this being the close of the third quarter of the fiscal year. The Fourth will be a busy day for the Jeff road. A picnic at Greenwood, one at the southern park, and the big race at Louisville will make travel rather lively. A dispatch was received Saturday night by L. D. Moody, insurance agent, announcing the death of his son, aged 15, at Nashville, Tennessee, from a railroad accident Mr. Expert Gelwick braced himself upon some of Mr. Commissioner Remy’s bread and milk Saturday afternoon, and came down to the auditor's office long enough to draw his pay from the county. The Sherman residence corner of Twelfth and Illinois streets was recently torn away. Srturday a dead horse was found in the old well at that place. The owner can find his animal at the Sellers farm. Dr. J. H. Bayliss, Mr. L. W. Munhall and Dr. L. D. Waterman sail the 13th instant for Europe, expecting to be absent about two . months. Messrs. Bayliss and Munhall will attend the world’s.Sunday school congress at Geneva during their trip. Sheriff S. R. Miller, of Elkhart countv, arrived here to-day with a deranged woman in charge, whom he was taking to the hospital, for the insane. She slipped away from him and her husband on South Illinois street this morning, and her wild actions ocoasipned considerable notice on that thoroughfare. She was recaptured. The Indianapolis and St. Louis road has issued a circular regarding 1,000-mile tickets. The present form of special mileage tickets will continue on sale, their use confined to the one person named in the ticket, and costing to $25. A similar ticket, but transferable, will cost $30. When in the hands of commercial travelers 200 pounds of baggage will be allowed thereon, locally. Nicola Sassale, costermonger, corner of. Washington and Pennsylvania streets, was in trouble this morning. Last night his fruit and candy stand was burglarized of several dollars worth of candy, bananas, etc. He anathematized his spoilers in choice Italian, adding in “Ingleese:” “I be-l-e-e-v-e he is two small boys what work in one offeece. I like him fund las’ night, 1 kill him altogezzer." - A justice of the peace living in the northern part of the county was bragging this morning about his skill in« binding wheat, and that he had won $5 on a bet from a countryman unacquainted with his expertneas, on - last Saturday. “You see, bein’ a 'squire, 1 didn't bet myself,” he said, “hat gave it to a boy to put up for me. We justices have got to keep the ermine clean, you know.” The Bee Line company is threatened with a suit for damages by th« death of Thomas Foley, January 29th last. He got on the freight train at the depot and jumped off at Michigan street, receiving Injuries from which he died. The^company, th^gh in no wise responsible for his death, offered to pay the funeral expenses, and the officers think it ia very hard to have to defend a suit for dUttces on top of that.
Dismissal of I’ostal Clerks.
The Sentinel this morning containsanitem roving that some 25 postal clerks and route agents leading into this city have been discharged from the service, without reason, so far as can be learned, and that they include every appointee of Congressman Hanna’s. The truth of the matter is this: Every six months this class of employes undergo examinations to test their efficency in the discharge of their duties, and as a result of last week’s examination some six or eight hare' been dropped. The examination covers two branches, what are known as the “scheme” and the “state.” In the latter the agent must know bow to distribute mail matter to 1,738 points, and tell the junctions and beet time and route for reaching intermediate stations. In the “scheme” he must answer the same questions with respect to about 1,000 points all over the country. It will readily be seen that no fool can hold the place, and that it requires constant study to keep up with the changes of time on t\yt railroads. A clerk who has been running one of the roads here for eight years failed to pass last week, and will have to leave
the service.
