4 Hopeful Feeling’ Everywhere.

Captain O’Leary’s, saloon closed yesterday. Tbe old sexton gathers them in— gethers them in. The Masonic matnal banefit society has paid $4,001.55 to the heirs of John Killinger, New Harmony. Reports of a proposed cut in the wages of the C. H. <& 1) trackmen and yardmasters lack confirmation. Charles Gray, whose dealings in silk handkerchiefs were before the pnblio, is wanted in Danville, 111, for burglary. Wm. Whittiker, the colored policeman, has brought suit for $5,000 damages against George Schrote, on account of that shot in the arm. F. J. Smith, a varnisher, fell from the top of a fifteen foot ladder in front of Heitkam's, yesterday afternoon, austainaevere injuries. The Inventors association has determined to raise $2,000 to aid H. A. 8. Park, in the prosecution of a suit against B. T. Bobbitt, on an infringement of a soap patent. Willie Grieabangh, the boy who was ininred by a street car at the corner of Dillon street and English avenue, about two weeks ago, died yesterday. The coroner will hold an inquest at the solicitation of tbe family. The big dog at the jail broke his chain yesterday, and attacked a prisoner who was walking tbrongh the yard. The man held on to tbe collar o( the ferocious brute with a vigor inspired by terror nntil assistance came when the dog was rechained. There ia ft queer difference between two of the ditch ponds along the Vincennes railway at the Belt intersection. The one on the east side is of an orange, admost bloody hoe, while that on the west, only fifty feet away, or less, ia as colorless as ditch water uanally is. One of Fargnson’s pork carts was run into while tbe driver was making a foolhardy attempt to croaa the anion tracks on Pennsylvania street, in front of a moving train, last night The cart and load were scattered about for two or three rods, but the driver escaped without Injury. The marriage of Mr. L. L. Perrine, one of the clerks in the poet office, and Miss Mamie D. Meek, the step daughter of Mr. George Andres, deputy clerk in the Untied States court, was celebrated at Christ church last evening. The church wss hsndsomely decorated and the occasion was one of unalloyed pleasure. Grace M. E. Sabbath school has elected as officers for tbe ensning year: Superintendent, J. W. Wert: male assistant*. James Bollinger; female assistant, Mrs. T. A. Sanders; secretary, J. W. Pendegraat: treasurer, Nimell; organist, Mrs. Nettie Wolfram; chorister, George Gadd; collector, Dick Laugsdale, After having permitted German variety theatrical companies to give Sunday night entertainments at Stein’s garden without interruption, the police propose to break up the proposed Maennerchor performencea at Keichwain's Sunday evening. Sorely the spasm* of virtue which attack the police occur at eccentric periods.

While the condition of the manufactories is not so much an indication of the revival of irade as that of the mercantile branches, the review published by The News yesterday wss the object of such general interest that we supplement it today with short statements concerning some of onr various working indnstries. As it is these which give employment to the larger number of workingmen in the city, their prosperous condition will be a cause of even greater gr&tulation. MACHINKRY. Tbe Atlas works is in better condition than at any time since it has been a company. It employs 250 bauds and as full of orders. “We have a large southern trade" said the president, “and just now orders are coming unsolicited from Tenneseee, northern Alabama and Texas. We have not much trade in this state and tfcat little ia not increasing. Our southern trade is one we have worked for and it is dependent not so much on the beginning of better times as on tbe needs and warns of that section. But, of coarse, good or bad seasons affect the trader generally, and with the beginning of a good season we expect to do even better than we are now doing. The country has unqueslionably struck bottom. I think every business man believes that there ia no “worse" to attain and there most be a bettering. I think the outlook is very hopeful. The revival of trade from this time on is a certainty.’’ The Western machine works has 140 men on the pay rolls. Business is fair and future prospects good. Since last March there has been an improvement, and there are decided evidences of still further improvement. People are making inquiries, there are more buyers and unsolicited orders are coming in. For tbe last . three or four years there has not been much new machinery sold. The old has been patched up and tinkered, and it is now about worn out, and there must be new work to take its place. This, with fresh demand, ought, and we think will, make a good trade. The Fagle machine works. "Our basiness in farm machinery is about over" said Mr. Watson, “and we are running only a hundred bands. We have had a very good year so far; the prospects for fall and winter trade are better than last year. We make saw mill and cotton machinery at this season of the year and nave several orders for southern plantations. Business in the south will improve in common with that of the whole country in addition to tbe improve-* ment of developement which is going on there. I think we have reached hard-pan." Haugh & Co., Architectural iron syorks: This business is less dependent on the condition of trade than any. The work is principally public buildings. They have a large trade in business fronts and with a building season which will come next spring consequent upon the. good crops this fall they expect a large trade. “In Minnesota," said Mr. Haugh, “a customer from there told me that the era of building had already begun consequent upon tbe immense wheat crop. Minneapolis has a fever of building and improvement similar to the one that consumed this place. Next spring I expect bniiding of all sorts to revive. That is one of the ways ‘good times’ works, and I think with this fall’s crops it has begun." FURWriTR*. Spiegel, Thoms & Co.: “It is' too early yet for this business. Last week It was Hat. This week there has been a small but noticeable improvement Orders were small, but they are increasing in number. We have new onstomers, and old customers are repeating their orders. It is now impossible to say what the fall trade will be, bnt there is a decided advance on last year and we feel encouraged. This increase is in the wholesale trade and from beyond the state limits principally. There is no improvement in the retail trade. The outlook is good. We are working a little over 100 hands. The Western Furniture Company: “We expect a good trade. It is beginning to look that way, but how good it will be can not now be gauged, as it is too early. Tbe retail trade Is no better. The improvement ie in the wholesale trade. We think the hardest times have gone and feel hopeful for the future. We are working seventy-five hands. WALHCT LUMBER. J. W. Bugbee: “Our trade does not begin before the middle of next month. I expect a good one this year. The stock in the east is light, and if there is any manufacturing done there they must have more lumber, and they have to get it here. I think we have practically reached bottom, and believe this fall will give us a good lift toward better times." ROLLING MILLS. The (old) rail Rolling mill is in as good condition now as it ever was at any time in its history. It has all the orders it can attend to, and gives employment to 250 hands. Capital City Iron works is full of work, and employs about 100 hands.
