Terrell, United States paymaster, has been in the city for a day or two past. Thu morning he took a short trip to Vincennes. The I. B. & W. changed time veeterday afiemoon. The usual CrawfordsviUe acorn modation was abandoned and tha evening express left at 5:25 instead of 6:30. The Pan handle misved her western connections (save the Vandalia) again last night, and so far as the union depot time card is concerned she is getting mighty uncertain. A company of stata militia at Connarsville asks information as to whether its . members shall pay poll and road tax. The auditor of state has decided that the law doee not give them tha coveted exemption. Min Ron Neff, sister of John E. Neff, ■ecretary of state died yesterday at Hot Springs, whither she had gone in the hope of repairing her health. The remains will arriva at 5:30 this afternoon. In the past three months county school superintendent Harlan has examined ICS apploanta for teachers’ licenses. About 65 par cent, of the applicants pass muster. The fall term of the county schools will begin September 10.

Gordon won second money in the shoot off from Cox. Ewing, Murray, Kissell, Jones, Tnrpinand Fisher. Third money was divided between Levi and Hirm, Rath dropping out on third hre. Three more matches are in progrese this afternoon, and the sport will last to-morrow. Several prominent sportsmen from neighboring towns and cities are present. The following clubs will enter teams for the club shoot: Champaign, Columbns, Franklin, Connersville, Indianapolis, and probably the Audubon, of Chicago. Funeral of E. T. Fletcher. Ths funeral of the late E T. Fletcher took place this morning from the family residence, on the corner of Delaware and Michigan streets. The funeral sermon, which was more in the form of a biographical sketch, was ureacbed by Rev. J. C. Fletcher, and in it ne related many touching scenes and incidents in the life of the deceased, which brought tears to the eyes of the listeners. The nailbearers were Calvin Fletcher. Stoughton A Fletcher, jr,, Ingram Fletcher, Dr W. B, Fletcher. 8. K. Fletcher, A. E. Fletcher, Simon Yandes and Geo. B. Yandes. A large number of friends followed the remains to the grave. Eatcat from tne Sitting Bull Party, Will O. Fishback returned this morning from Chicago, where he went in expectation of starting with the Sitting Bull rommiseioners from that place, Sunday. The reason of the delay seems to b3 the difficulty encountered in finding a citizen who is willing to take the chances of getting back alive. Another obstacle that has arisen is the ordering of the cavalry escort at Fort Benton into active service in heading off Chief Joseph until Howard can catch up with him and sprinkle salt on his eagle plume. The commission will have to get another escort or wait till the cloee of the Joseph campaign. Ex pres* Offices Consolidated. The consolidation of American and United States express offices takes place in the following towns tributary to this
city:
Crswfordgville, Reynolds, Templeton, Lafayette, Losansport, Kokomo, Frankfort, Klv?ood, Anderson, Muncie, Hartford City, Richmond, Connorsvillo and Rushville. Of the above so far as arreed upon, the American express company control the following: Crawfordsviile, Templeton, Kokomo, Elwood, Mancie, Reynolds, Losansnort, Frankfort, Hartfo'd City, Richmond; and the U. S. express oompany the following: Anderson, Connersville, Rushville. Frankfort and Elwood. were transferred to the American express company June 30,1877.

Between 12 and 1 o’clock to-day CoL George H. Wood, of the central elevator, company, seated in his baggy in front of the board of trade bniiding, was thrown from his vehicle which was struck by a team of runaway horses attached to the fore wheels of a heavy wagon. The colonel was thrown over the dash board of the buggy underneath hia horse which fell upon him. In addition to several cuts upon the face and head it is feared that he has received severe internal injnrics. He was removed to his residence on North Delaware street, near Massa-

'Biddingsr, Murphy <fc Co., $7,200. After consideration* the commissioners decided to reject each and all of the bids. The matter is still opsn. It will be seen that the state is not only not likely to realiza anything on the rubbish, but will probably be forced to pay fer its removal.

A Brutal Affair. The other day a lady residing at 669 East Washington street caught a stray canary bird and put it in a cage with a bird of her own. Yesterday, daring the absence of her husband, who is in Terre Haute, two men came to the honss, claiming the bird, which she refused to deliver up until her husband returned. They then knocked her down and kicked and beat her until she became unconscions. As she is in delicate health and her injuries serious, her recovery is doubtfal. Warrants for the arrest of the miscreants are now in orden * Amateur Ball Oames. The Browns of this city were defeated veeterday by the Fairplays, 18 to 0. The Fairplays have met with reasonable success this season, the score being as follows: May 2L Fairplays 9, Browns 9; June 18, Fairplay#15, Browns 8; June 21, Fairplays 18, Browns 3; July 23. Railroad Change. Announcement is rondo that Mr. H« Pn*o» teneral panenrer and ticket agent of the Grand Rapidi A Indiana railroad, has left to take a position on a Texas road, that Mr. Loet, general freight agent, will be Mr. Pace’s successor after September 1st. Had still continue to perform his present duties, and Claude L. Lockwood will have charge of the seoeral passenger and ticket departments until Mr. Leet takes hold.—IGrand Rapids Eagle. Of Mr. Pago, it can be said he leaves many warm friends behind him, no doubt to nuke new ones where he is going, and with his thorough railroad exparienoe will prove a valuable acquisition to the roed which now claims him.
