Frank Smallman, foreman of the Indianapolis stove works, fell from the roof the Rochester opera house on Wednesday, a distance of 30 feet, receiving injuries which will probably result fatally. His wife in this city has been telegraphed for. The foreclosure of the blanket mortgage, which covers all the ground except that owned by the Udell ladder works, is giving the people of North Indianapolis a good deal of anxiety. Many of them wonid like to pay np and be released, bnt the matter ia in such a condition that it can not be done at present. John Tomlinson and Caleb Dalton, of Plainfield, who arrested Fairbanks and Xennedy, the men from whom Dr. Strong procured the money returned to the Indiana National bank, claim that they are entitled to the teward. One thousand nine hundred and five dollars is the amount they want twenty per cent, upon. Ba*e Ball* The Blues played at Buffalo yesterday, •defating the Baffaloes by a soore of 4 to 0. The home nine was greatly strengthened for the contest, but the players could not bat Nolan. Mr. Halbert, president of the Chicago club, has invited the Blues, Alleghenies and Stan to repeat their tournament in Obicago the week after they play in Pittsburg, beginning on September 17. The Bluts have signified their willingness to accept, and the other clubs will probably do so. It is the arrangement for next rear to hire Flint and Nolan catch and pitch on slttrnaU days, Williamson and McKelvey relieving them. The games elsewhere yesterday resulted as follows: Alleghenies 3, Milwaukees2; Hartfords 1, Leuisvilles 1,11 innings; Bottom 10, Ciocinnatis 3. Some Surg-erjr. Relief of the Poor. To the Editor of The Indianapolis News: In looking forward to the coming winter every one interested in tbe least in the condition of the unemployed, realizes the necessity there will be of some systematic sgrangement for caring for them, and a thoroiiKh inquiry into the matter now may lead to the adoption of such measures as will prove of great advantage to tbe city. It is understood that the township trustee will not be able to render such service as he did last year in this direction, even il it should be desired, and consequently other means must be employed. Tbe poor we have always with us, and this winter will doubtless prove anythinfpbut an exception to that prophecy. The first considsration in matters of charity should be to provide work if possible to tbe snbject, and it is to this end that the following plan is suggested. Tbe idea is not original, but has been tried successfully in other places: Let tbe city if practicable lease tbe exposition building as a “shelter for the homeless,” furnish stone and employ those out of work in breaking it, the stone to be used in macadamizing the streets. Let such compensation be made as will not make it desirable above other work, If attainable. Give tbe married men with families the preference of work. Let it be understood that no able bodied man will be allowed to receive any constributions at the kitchen doors, but every each one will be referred at once to the home, where he can stay and work for bis board nutil he desires to leave. Let all tbe contributions from tbe the citizens go into this one channel, both* of mousy, clothes and food. Arrangements could be effected for gathering food if necessary. Cots would have to be furnished and such other appliances as necessary, and perfect discipline enforced. Let a citizens’ committee have charge of tbe home, have a reliable visitor in every block in the city, as is the custom of the benevolent society. In this way all of the charitable work of tbe city could be done systematically and reliably. The donation tbe city could make, the contributions of the citizens, and tbe proceeds realized from tbe broken stone, for which the city coold pay a reasonable sum, would provide for the whole work. Two-tbirds of the money, clothing and food given away daring winter by individnais are misapplied. We should have no tramps seeking refuge here, if, as is believed, tramps won’t work. Few if'any passes wonid have to be given to tbe class who travel during the winter months. Thers ought to be a hearty indorsement of and co-operation in some plan of this kind by all benevolently-disposed persons of tbe city, ao every one could feel that their donations were reaching the worthy needy. Arrangements would have to be made for the widows and the sick, but all could be provided for by the one sgency. We should not delay action upon this subject until the winter months are fairly upon us, but carefully consider tbe matter and prepare for it, so that the doty before us may be met in a business-like and economical manner.
