The feast of the Assumption was observed in all the Catholio churches this morning bv the celebration of high mass. Vespers will be observed this evening. A new west side literary society has been formed, with William Browfi president; Alice Wray,vice-president; Edward Brown, secretary; Joseph Bush, treasurer. Railroad men have been Bounded in this city on the subject of fast (7018111 lines and profess to see nothing treasonable in thebi. Further, they seem to think the lines an actual benefit. , <*, I’xegreaa of Uie Belt. The Belt road has now constantly #m ployed on the grading and track work 700 men and 125 teams. Besides these some fifty more are engaged In the construction of the stock sheds and the itone work of U e exchange building. Part of these are extending the grade; part completing the 4 fill” in Pleasant Bun bottom, where work was stopped for want of material for the bank six reeks ago; part are harrying on the bridge—now all ready for the euperetraelnre, as the west abutment is done; part are levelling the track—which, by tbe way, is the neates', belt set, and solidcst pirce of track laying ever done in this county, for it is just as smooth, level end comnlete now es tbe oldest and best a etched track that enters the city; part are engaged in the heaviest job of the whole enterprise, under the direction of ex-fire engineer Whitait, filling in the bnge gap in the embankment made by tbe floods two yean ago. This fill is 27 feet high, 108 wide at tbe bottom, and about 300 long. Mr. Richardson, general superintendent of the railroad, both in grading, track laying and bridge work, a*} s that the stone hands engaged on the tonthern bridge are to go to work at once on the pien and abutments of the northern bridge. He also ssys that if be can have ten days of uninterrupteJ working weather be can finish everything to North Indianapolis but the bridge. He is stopped in track laying now for the want of rails. The strike threw the road out of the tnpply counted ou, and it muat wait for a new maonfaeture.
Killing Stock. The Tandalia railroad has been unusually unlucky in the last two days. On Monday a train ki led a fine cow for Mr. Griffith of West street, just east of elevator B, and on the same day killed a fine hog of 340 pounds, just east of the elevator. Yesterday it killed a tramp at Eagle creek bridge. In the man’s case the road is not blameable, for he had no business on the track, but in the case of the stock it is, for it has torn down all the fences along the track, and cattle and hogs can climb the embankment almost anywhere from the vastaproad of common created by turning cornfields into knsalable city lots. These fences are to be at once replaced it is said. As city cows swarm over the road at certain hours of the day, going out to free pasture on the abandoned grain ground—of which folly a thousand acres are about the railway or within ten minutes walk of it—some such protection will cost the company less than the damages for slaughtered stock. Old Settlere. The old settlers’ meeting at Mooresville yesterday was well attended, over 5,000 persons being present. John D. Garter presided, calling tbe meeting to order at ten o’clock a. m. After the preliminary exercises, short biographical sketches were read of tbe old settlers who have died since the last meeting. Governor Williams and General John Ooburn spoke. Homer Bray, of Mooresville, aged 89, spoke, giving a long and eventful history of tbe struggles of the early settlers. He was followed by Samnel Moore, aged 78, founder of tbe town of Mooresville. Judge J. S. Newman, of this oity, and several others spoke. Altogether, notwithstanding the frequent showers, the day was pleasantly spent. The Chicago base ball cinb defeated the Blues yesterday by a score of 4 to 3. The grounds were mnddy and the score shows that the victorious club made II eirors to their opponents’ 6 The return gsme today nosy result differently.

By an expenditure of over a million dollars annually, with a well trained staff, seventy-five BfAnch Offices, and tho confidence and co-operation of all the bi.«t merchants and bankers in the oountry, it Las become arepository of information regarding capital and ersdit which no prudent business man can afford to do withont. Even this large eipenditnre is insufficient to effect all ite Proprietors desire, and it is evident, therefore, that to attempt any competition in price with the cheap imitations now so numerouS'yoffered, would be to destroy in a great measure its usefulness. By loni: experience this Agensy has ascertained tbe rate at which the business can be profitably done. Beneath that rate it i# felly to attempt it, as is shown by the career of those who have undeitaken to cheapen it. By adhering to its rates, which have never been excessive, the Agency can best serve iu patrons and retain their confidence. By yielding to tha policy of competing fn price with rivals, it would soon place itself in the same position as they are now found, which would be kcalamity not alone t* the Agency itself, but to the community which it has endeavored faintfully to serve.
