People who have houses or rooms to rent can easily secure tenants by advertising m The NetM. Its columns are eagerly scanned nffw by persons in search
at residences.
Jake Crone, proprietor of the city garden, was fined $25 yesterday afternoon for rnnning the variety and beer business together. Another case against him is on this afternoon in the city court The officers say they will keep it up. The-Acton eamp meeting began yesterday under most auspicious circumstances. The attendance was much larger than was expected for the Brat day, and the interest manifested was particularly great and gratifying The meeting will last two' 1
weeks.
Yesterday afternoon the provisional board of the insane hospital awarded the contract for furnishing and potting gas and water pipes and gas fixtures in the new building to Baker & Smith, of New York. This work will cost between $50,€C0 and $70 000 The board of county commissioners pay Boynton A Buck $1,000 per annum to furniau medicines and medical attendant* to the poor of Center township, and the last report shows that the coun'y paid them at the rate of $4 for each patient treated and $2 for each visitThe state house oommiseloners have assigned rooms in the McCray, nee Gallup block, es follows: state library, all of ground floor except south room for adjutant general ; stare board of agriculture, aouth half of seooflb floor; atata geologist north half of second floor. The third Boor will be need for storage pnrpooea.
Positive bargains in real esti'e, goods or my other articles, can • ways com* m&td purchasers. The holders of such can tell fifty thousand peonle of the chance by spending a few rents for a cheap advertisement in The News. Coroner Wisbard has received a letter from Alexander Robinson, of Aberdeen. Scotland, acknowledging the receipt of the notice of the death of hi# brother James, the man found dead on the farm of Mrs. Marquis, three miles south of the city, in June. Deceased had been in this country bnt a few months. People are anxious to save money now. They can do that best by doing their advertising in The New?, which is read by more people than any other paper in the state. Beard ot Aldermen. The meeting of the board of aldermen was very tame last night The city attorney presented an elaborata report (howing tbat Military park is nnder the control of the city while it is used for park purposes. Several street improvement motions from the council were concurred in, and an ordinance was passed appropriating $908 to pay the special nolicemen sworn in during the strike. Ordinances were also passed appropriating $19,889 47 to pay the July expenses in the various depaitments. ^ , A Dram of Poison. John B. McArthur, formerly a member of the city council from the old Fourth ward, purchased eight grains of morphine at a drug store on Indiana avenue about 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, then goidf to a lealoon mixed the poison in a glass of beer and drank it. Saved by a stomach pump and two other doctors. He has been drinking a great deal lately, and gave as a reSkon for this attempt on his life that he wished “to get out of the way.” State Temperance Union. The Catholic total abstinence anion of Indiana met yesterday afternoon at St. John’s bell, adopted a new constitution and elected the following officers (or the ensuing year: President, the Rev. Hermann Allerding, Indianapolis; vice presidents, the Rev. Father Loudeman, Kokomo, Edward Nolan, ‘Indianapolis; secretary, Dennis Eagan, Liberty; treasurer, Edward Burns, Indianapolis; spiritual director, RL Rsv. August Bessonies, Indianapolis. The Rev. Father Bessonies was also elected a delegate to represent this state at the national convention, which meets at Buffalo August 29. I _ . Street Repair* Needed. To the Editor of The Indianapolis News: Will you please call the attention of the street commissioner, or whomsoever it may concern, to the fact that more than a year -loa the water-works fompany dug two i.; nches across North Pennsylvania street, one opposite the residence of the Johnston brothers, the other about seventyfive feet north of that point, both opposite the blind asylum grounds. As is usual in such cases, the ground has settled and the paving stones are several inches below the level of the street Parties driving across these ditches at the rate of four miles per hoar, not only get terribly jolted, but run a great risk of breaking their carriages. The failure of tbe city to repair the block pavement on either Meridian or Delaware streets forces a larger amonnt of travel on Pennsylvania, and the nuisance to which I refer should at once be abated at the expanse of the water-works company. It has been endured for more than a year past, and while tbe street commissioner has during tbat period cleaned the street on several O' casions, he has apparently failed to notice tbat either he or the water-works company have failed to do their duty. General Lee’* Example. I Whit# Sulphur correspondence New York Express, j When tbe rebellion had exhausted itself, and General Lee had surrendered to General Grant, an engineer of the confederacy, a friend of the writer’s, who had fought to the bitter end, and only gave np when Jefferson Davis and his party were finally brought to a surrender in Georgia, presented himself to Lee for advice. “I have,” said the defeated general and engineer, “a professional offer to go to Russia; I can not well bear the misfortune of defeat ; but what woald yon advise me to do?” The answer was worthy alike of a true American and one of the foremoet of the sons of Virginia: “Do as I have done. Surrender to the Union forces. Take the oath of allegiance, keep the oath, and endeavor in good faith to bnild np what, for fonr years civil war hat been pulling down. I have pledged^my word to do this, and I Intend And Lee, from tbe hour of his painful surrender, which was not until ovar a quarter of a million of union troops closed upon thirty or forty thousand of broken-spirited confederates, never hesitated eitber to counsel or to work for the restoration of the union. Everywhere, therefore, the name of Lee at the south is a talismanie word. In almost every house there is a portrait of the southern leader, and his name and exaiqgje, which in 1861 waa an inspiration for resistance, became in 1865 both the revelation and reason for eubmiseion. In 1865 tbe sonth was not only exhausted in all its material wealth—the land excepted—but it needed the example of men like Gen Lee to recreate the sonthern country. Slavery waa gone, and all organized labor for a time went with it The railroad power was exhausted, and the horses and cattle and machinery were almost totally, destroyed. JPeruonal Gourave. fNaw York World.J Brave men are seldom inclined to throw the first stone of reprobation at a coward, for they know how peculiar a quality courage is, varying in the same person towards different objects, and sometimes even affected by changing moods and circumstances A man who would not blench from fire in a pitched battle may dread adreet tight in which he may get kicked, bruised and disfigured. A man whom nothii-g can terrify on land may be a very baby on the water. A stout man-at-afms has often been panic stricken at tbe idem of a ghost The bravest man in tbe army of Pyrrhus was afflicted with a i rievous disease, but he became very cautious and worthless when the king’s physician cored him. Frederick the Great was frightened at his first battle. The joungsoldiersof Pompey fought well until Caesar's veterans struck at their comely faces A man not afraid to encounter a lion may khrink at the sight of a snake, and be who has a reckless disregard of mankind m general may have a mysterious dread of one particular person. This truth Homer understood thoroughly and made his heroes run away one day and of arge the next, as the mood prompted them or as the men of whom tbev stood in tkTTOT were present in the battle'or abient in the tenia Blessed is the possession of serene strong courage, for tbe man who has it walks through life unraffied by the vsgne but tormenting demons of the imagination He suffers not from blows that are never struck, from ambuscades that are not laid, from burglars that pick no locks and break open no safes Bat the poor coward is ever in dread of shadows that strike more terror to his soul than the substance of real evils.
Blackberry Vinegar. To two pounds of blackbaniea put one quart of cider-vinegar; let it stood 1 du-ty-four hours, then strain through a .air sieve without breaking the fruit; again pour tbe same liquor over a quart of fresh frait and let it stand another twen-ty-four hours; then strain the whole through the sieve, adding one poand of white sugar to every pint of juice, and boil twenty minutes.
