Now th*t the majesty of the law bats been yindicated by a p polar nprising of the right thinking and law abiding people, professional po iticisns and demfgogaea, who either miaapprebecd or disregard tha higher duties of ibair citizenship, are eeeking to defend and sustain their miserably saltish coarse by attacking the railroad management of the whole country wnh sweeping charges of thievery and corruption, the truth of which it is no part of their plan to investigate. Criticism of the acts of corporatioi a or public men, wherein the public are interested, made in a spirit of fairness becked by well authenticated facts, is the right of all. and by snch methods abases may ba corrected. The hue and cry raised at this time by designing men of the class above alluded to, is calculated to mislead many good peopla who have not the time to investigate for themcalvee. That corporations, under the most conscientious management, like individntls, are'notinfallible is true, and that tne management of some roads have been corrupt there can ba no realonabie doubt. It would ba pr-sump toons in me to attempt to become the champion of such great railroad maoagera i-s < ol Tom Bcott, W H Vanderb it. John W. Garrett and H. J. Jewett, whose enicipme and sound financial managemer t have had the approval of thair stockholders for many years, and I will only express the belief that they have generally been jnat to their emp'oyee— if notgenerons. The principal object of this communication is, in a general way. to deny that the so called '‘fast freight lime” ara ‘ parasites” on the railroad bod/ politic, or that thair existence is in any way detrimental to the interests of the road or the people who use them. I make the following assertion withoat the fear of successful contradiction: Pint, that there is not in the Whole list more -then two organizatiors that have an existence in any degree independent of tl!e roads oter which they operate Sec md. that with the exception above made they simply represent what is known as the through-billing system of ope or more roads from the west to the seaboard and are co-operative, the ownership of tbs rolling stock and the expanse of operating the business being divided pro rata. Third, That the present system of working by tba so called “fast freight lines” is more economical and satisfactory than by any method ever triad.
