Six drunks to day before the mayor. Monday begins the Jewish new year. Mrs. Emma Maks wants a divorce from Fred. No marriage licenses issued this forenoon. The bolice and fire departments were paid to-day. A call is out for Johnny Pearson to lecture upon ballooning. 8o far this week, 41 deaths have been reported to the board oi health. 81. Harvey to-day occupied the desk in Judge Blair a room, filled by the late Bart Hibtoen. Billy Rice, baggage smasher on the I., B. and W., leaves early next week for the centennial. In the case of Bert Hibben, Dr. I. 0. Walker makes the return o! death from causes unknown. The street commissioner’s pay roll this week shows 1841.64 for street work, and $346.68 for levee. The attendance on ’change to-day was quite limited and the business transactions not very spirited. In making a return to the board of health a city physician pots it “parreiacis” as the cause of death.
The Sabbath afternoon temperance meeting on the Booth Side will be held at Olive Branch churcft to-morrow.
Malbttm Hagan la on trial to-day in t^o criminal court, charged with stealing $i5 worth of stuff from Charles J. Shearer. Prof. Oox, State geologist, is home again from the centennial, having also attended the acientific gathering at Buffalo. James T. Dodson, of Whites town, has filed bis voluntary petition in bankruptcy, which baa been referred to Regisfbr Ray. The Hogeland one stave barrel mill at Louisville, Ky., is a success, being in full operation with a capacity of 1,000 barrels per day. LanraJSloaa, Jennie Morris, John Carson andJoba Ward, “long,” and therefore fictitious names, fell to-day under the ill-fame lew. The stock of provisions in store at this point September 15 was: Clear rib sides, 2,259,185; d. s. shoulders, 050,000; tieroes lard, kettle, 990. To-day Judge Blair divorced Emma' L. Hatton from Thomas 0.. and Ella King from Charles F. Abandonment and failure to provide were the grievances. The street organ grinders have received a new addition to their number, who in his appeal to the public announces, “I was blown op in an explosion,” etc. Pawn brokers and second-hand furnishing boosts are doing a large business with a class of cnstomers who ordinarily have no dealings with snch establishments. The Pan Handle mail train due here at 6:06 this morning was three hours late in arriving, and the Vandaiia accordingly ran a special through to 8t Louis, leaving
at 9:15.
James O’Connell snes Edwin Mallailey for $2,500 damages, consequent upon athraahing which the defendant administered to the plaintiff on the 1st of the present month. A drove of infuriated cattle, while enroots for the yards, became unmanageable thismomiug on West South street, and for a time kept np a lively rompaa along that thoroughfare. ' The democracy have a disposition to know whether Elisha Howland, their candidate for state senator, will vote for TUden or Peter Cooper. 8o far, Mr. Howland dodges the issue. This forenoon about 11 o’clock, corner Pennsylvania and Seventh streets, Chas. P. Jacobs and Miss Qillett were thrown from their buggy by a runaway but were not seriously injured. The police are casting about for their winter overcoats, and some of them are showing an admirable independence in making their purchases where they choose and at theirown figures. If tbs democratic street parade to-night la not an imposing affair, it will be no fault of the faithful, who are putting forth every effort to excel the republican demonstration of last Saturday night The Harmonic society opens the season next Monday evening at Roberts Park church, with W. H. Clarke in charge of the baton. The study for the season will be Mendelssohn’s oratorio of St. Paul. J. H. Dickson, of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, writes to John A. Pearson, asking for a number of horses, to be used by the department of Pennsylvania daring the soldiers’ reanion in this city next week. Some months ago Ann Turner was found guilty in the special term of the superior court for keeping a bouse of 111 fame, and she appealed to the general term. Judge Perkins has acquitted her. William McKay, arrested yesterday for stealing Dr. Kaiser’s medicine chest, today went to the grand jury. Some have confounded this thief with McKay, the saioonatic, and the saloonatic therefore
howls.
Last-evening Tom Payton, a street car driver on North Illinois street, was arrested for faat driving, and to-day his examination was con tinned nntU Tuesday next. The arrest of a street railway man for driving too fast is rather odd. Bat nine building permits were irnatd during the past week, involving a total of $4,272. The principal items were Hartman <fc Drier’s carriage shop, on South street, $1,750, and George W. Butler’s residence ou College avenue, $1,600. The Samuel 0. Vance whose contribution in favor of reform was published so prominently by the Sentinel yesterday, was convicted by the criminal court last year of keeping a gaming house, and was fined $275 and costs. He knows how it is
himself.
To day, before mayor, George Dillon pleaded guilty to hurling a bowlder into the window of Mra. Mattie Aloes, on Walnut street, and was fined under the malicious treepats act. He was then taken before Esq. Catterson on a surety of the peace, complaint preferred by Mrs. George
Dillon.
McEvoy’s Hibernioon, or “Ireland in America,’’ commences a season in Masonic Hall Friday evening next. Dan Morris, Mias Josie Harris, John Henshaw, Tom Haves, Miss Rosa Harding, Miss Norah O’Brien, William Emery and James A. McEvoy are members of the combination, and the entertainment is advertised as different from former years. The principal feature about the court house to-day wss in Blair’s room, superior
court, the Central Plank Road company suing Jacob Traub for uncollected toll. The defense sets np that under an agreement with the board of county commissioners the plaintiff agreed to remove the toll gat« beyond the lands of defendant, and therefore the company is«not entitled
to toll.
The connty commissioners have settled down to the discussion of the court house tower clock question. Fred. Herron bids to furnish clocks at $2,250 and $3 250; tbe Seth Thomas clock company will furnish tbe clock now in use in the centennial boilding, Philadelphia, for $5,000, and one next in size for $4,500; the Howard company will furnish the clock now on exhibition at Bingham’s for $4 000, and one a size smaller and not so elaborate in finish lor $3,500. Attempted Rape. Last evening Andrew McClure, of the twelfth ward, was arrested upon a complaint filed by John Maiden, 22 Willard street, charging him with attempted rape upon hie daughter Ida, a child less than six years of sge. The girl was decoyed into an alley, and is said to have been saved by the timely appearance of Patrick McDonald and Mary Campbell, who were attracted by the victim’s screams. The mayor to day postponed examination until Monday, to await the appaarance of 'witnesses.
Bert Hibben. Last evening the deputies in the county clerk’s office bald a.formal saasion and passed resolutions in memoriam oi their late associate, Ethel bar t C. Hibben. The TiMen guards also did the same, and copies of these resolutions were to-day formally presented to the family of the deceased. It was intended to ship the remains to Rushville for interment at 10 O’clock a. m. to day, but a postponement set tbe boor fear this afternoon—services first being held at his late reside nee, on North West street.
Ilfise Hall ilote*. Two games w«re played in the base halt tobjriiSnrent yenteiday afternoon; the Cut between the ‘ Feather WeighU,” of Danville, and the “Stan,’* this city; and the seeond between the Pendletons, of Pendie ion, and tbe Eagles, of Indianapolis. The first game was a walk away for the “Siam,” and alter the third Inning tbe nine worked to kwep down the score— “Chicagoing” the ‘ Feather Weights, ’ and going out themselves whenever it was possible. Result, 18 to 4 In their bout with the Eagles the Peudle ons played with vigor, and won by 13 to 9. This afternoon tbeEaghs vs. the Center Stars, and the Indianapolis vs the Capital Citys, were upon the bulletin board and lively games are anticipated. The St. Louis Browns will play the Indianapolis nine Thursday next, on the South street grounds. iBy telegraph.] , Philadelphia, September 15.-Base ball: 12 8456789 Athletics .......0 00000000—0 Loulsvilles 2 00000100—S Runs earned—None. The correspondent of The News who charged the Vandaiia road with putting a tax on business men here and discriminating against Indianapolis, thinks The News was wrong and did him injustice in saying the order applied only to grain cars that were not emptied when delivered. He cites a case in which the dealer had to pay the dollar per car before he ever received the freight bill, showing that it was not a charge for delayed cars. He also sends a copy of the order, and The News is forced to admit that he is right. The correspondent says: OTTbe veracity of your oorrespondent is called in question as to the charge made in my communication that some of the railroads were disciiminating against Indianapolis. 1 herewith hand you the order issued, and beside can show a receipt for $1 paid tor de.ivering a car of mill feed from tne T. H. A L mil read to the Bee Line, and the shipping order was given to the T. H. A I. railroad before the freight bill was presented. This thows what it will cost Indianapolis merchants whea the belt railroad is made. Taxes. The following is the order: SaPTBMBEB 5. To grain Dealers: On and after September 6, on all grain, bran and mill stuff for Indianapolis consignees not sent to elevator ’ B,” there will be a charge made of one dollar per car for delivery, in addition to the (•hipping chsrges collected and l>aid to other roads or partlesfar the use of their track when the car I* taken to any prlva.e switch, warehouse or elevator other than elevator "B.’s This charge will be co’Jected In the usual way by tickets, consignee being required to leave a ticket with the switching order at the office of the yard master. Yours truly, H. P. Wktskll, Agent. The democracy make a grand rally tonight in honor of Senator Doolittle, of Wisconsin, and tbe republicans ditto for Carl Schnrz. The streets will be thronged.
