Blood on tbe Muon. Curing the discussion of a motion in council last night to change the polling place in the ninth ward, which was voted down, there was a recontre of wards between Cnrran and Schmidt which afforded no little amusement Schmidt was stating to the council in argument for a change that the owner of the room selected refused consent, and Curran inter* olated with the question: “How does this council know he objects?” Schmidt mildly exp ained that the owner had informed him to that effect, still Curran put n: -“How does this council know?” etc ,and he persisted in repeating the question not withstanding the chair kept saying, "The other gentleman has tbe floor ” Schmidt is of teutonic temperament and slow to wrath, hut there was a dangerous flash ran down the bridge of his nose, as he retorted: ‘This council knows because I say so—the owner told me.” "You,” answered Curran, “yto-u; the council took your word once and lost over $2 000 Y-o-u”- and what more he would have said was drowned in the sound of the mayor’s gavel. Schmidt boiled at Ibis insinuation and detn%uded an examination of his record as councilman, and tbe matter was finally quieted by voting down iba change of polling place and adj mrning After tbe adjmrnment Schmidt showed a disposition to biunoe purran, but friende interfered and prevented wbat might have t^«m a healthy tumble in that excited crowd. * 'MM* ' H . ■ /ttllllavhAaf Ur » The only theater with foot-lights blazing last night was the Metropolitan, and the program was of the usual variety spice Three laughable farces were ziven by Chris de Bchneider, Lipman. Goodrich, Miles and others; there were songs by Grace Garland. ♦ favorite; Jennie Cole, Georgie May, Maud Leonore and little Florence, and a donble tmpez act by Mille Cara and M. Austin fhe La Rue family (Wm. La Rne and two small boys), performed a number of difficult acrobatic feats, one of which should be tabooed out of pity for tbe little mite who, last night, received several dangerous falls be fore be accomplished his portion. This feat consisted of one boys standing erect upon the feet of the elder La Rue, who lay upon his back upon the floor. The second boy then climbed upon tbe shoulders of the first, and throwing a somersault was caught upon the feet of the recumbent man Three times the little fellow attempted it last night be fore he succeeded, falling each time beavilv to the floor, bruising his arm until the blood seemed to start from tbe skin, and bumping bis head until he was half blinded by tears of pain and fear. Still he was forced to go on with the performance, and it was only after the fourth trial that be partially succeeded There is enough to atiract in the other stage business of the La Rne fkmily, and the professor will, therefore, show bis humanity if he omits in the future what is above censured. Holding Over nud Oo n* Ont. One hates to see Dr Hook going ont of council, for be is a kindly dispositioned fellolw, never with much to say, and save his “perpendicnlar alley” hallucination, of sipong parts and much good. However, Vale Hook. Madden a so goes out with tbe election to day, whether it be republican or democrat; and so does Geiger, the spitefnl, who ruined his reputation to avenge a grievance It is the last of Gimber, whose good and bad points are bar Dy a stand off; and of Htnckmeyer. whose absence will not be missed,—and Albershardt, the jurist; Hall, of Sellers Farm unpleasantness; and Kahn, whose record ontside of the German printing steal is that of a prudent, clear thinking, bard-working councilman. Curran a'sosteps down, satisfied that one term is enough fora corner grocery; and the city suffers a loss in Dr. Ward, who by tbe redistricting outrage wais legislated outside bis district Adams, B*j|ehrig, Craft, Darnail, Kenzel, D ffiey, Stratford, Laughlin. Ransdall, Reasner.Web ster, Schmidt and fhalman hold over—7 re publicans and 6 democrats, and McGill and Reed have reoeived tbe compliment of renominations for their present positions. Rotation is the word. *
A Bi-mi b BrU MwrrlMwe. Yesterday Joseph 8 Otwell and Miss Jennie Von Bt-rgsn were yesterday united in marriage by .ir. De La Matyr. under circura stances too realistic to b« romantic. Mr Otwell is a son of Patrolman Otwell, and is a victim to the terrib'.e disease which afflicted his family during the past winter, and, though tbe expression is a sad one, is to-
day upon his death-bed. Tbe bride ia a fair yonng girl, with whom he plighted bis troth sfflbe years ago, and the marriage yesterday was made that she should be still nearer him as a comforting messenger daring tbe days he may yet live. None were present at the bed aide but the immediate relatives, and the marriage ceremony, usually so joyous, was, upon this occasion, one of tearful solemnity. 1 balm an ■•ve*. Yesterday it was circulated that the dem ocracy of the council, nervous over the probable result in some of the wards to-day, and confident of their ability to carry tbe fourth, had determined, last evening, to declare Thalman’s seat vacant by reason of his non residence In his ward. Jn about twenty minutes after the originating of this rumor, a string of republicans wefe frantically banting for Isaac, and tbe alacrity with which be bustled his household goods back into his old precinct showed nervous political energy of no mean description. Last night he came puffing and blowing into the council chamber, as if the labors of the day had been unusually fatiguing. | Mlolsierlal Union The Ministerial Union debated “bow best 'O interest the young people in temperance” at its session yesterday afternoon, Revs. Rich ards and Dean leading the disensgrion. The subject chosen for consideration at. the next meeting was Acts ii, 23: “Him bsing delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God ye have taken and by wicked hands have crucified and slain. Rev. George L. Curtis and Dr. Withrow to open the discussion. i Rebel Me nit menu. The 13th ward democratic meeting last evening made up in noise what it lacked in numbers and respectability, and speeches were heard from Ryan,Pendleton and Nichol The character of the crowd may be jndged from an incident which occurred when Church threw upon canvass a life-sized portrait of Lincoln, which was received with howls of disapprobation by tbe rowdy element, and none were more demonstrativi than Officer Keely, who yelled ont at tbe top of his voice, “take him ont, take him ont.” Such demonstrations were shameful, even from a democratic crowd, and it was with difficulty that several republicans, in the audience could restrain themselves from resenting the insult which there seemed a necessity for doing. Again Bnowesl Under. Messrs. Hopkins, Stevens and Chase, representing the workingmen’s party, last night petitioned the council again for representation upon the election board, and Mr. Adams, in sympathy with their petition, recommended that the inspectors of the election be taken from the names suggested by the committee. The unanimity with which the council voted down the proposition and tabled the petition can only be likened to tbe passage of the redistricting outrage. Police to Gland Clear. Enos B Reed. In bis capacity as president of the police board, has issned an order cautioning patrolmen against taking an active part at the polls to-day. This under secti on xiii of the rules $nd regulations governing tbe police, which reads as follows: An offl «r or member of ihe police force who -hall be found takina an active pArt. or influencing or int midatiog voter-* at any election shaU be pr mptly dismissed from tne same. » 1 Bontnport Want* More Greenbacks. To tbe . ditorof The Evening News: After a closely contested fight tbe independents carried onr village to-day over the combined forces of tbe democrats and republicans, electing the entire ticket except one councilman and the town treasurer, which were secured by the democrats by a small majority. Tbe independents have ont tbe cannon and are having a grand jubilee. Mr. Wm Anderson, candidate for representative. is doing tbe speaking Mark a copy and send it to Landers, he may be thereby induced to let his “name remain at *he head of the ticket.” Buck. Cbxek. Tbler Nlinwilie on the W in*. [St. Louis Republican^ An old Texas cattle man, named Siebert, proved a very rough customer for a pair of hungry thieves to deal with. He bad sold his drove in Chicago and pocketed $7,000 ss the proceeds A couple of railroad thieves found ont he had a large amount of money, aod apparently resolved to get it at any risk The prise was worth their daring. They tried all their usual tricks on the old fellow before be left Chicago, bat failed to catch him in any trap When he had gathered up his valise and took a western bound train they followed him. They took seats 'behind him in the car, watching their opportunity. Just after the Burlington & Missouri river train left Burlington the rate of speed was slow, and the old man was dozing in his seat. Now was their chance if ever One of the thieves reaching over, seized the old man’s pocketbook from his side pocket, knowing just where to place his band on it, and tbe other grabbed the valise and ran—one towards the front door, and the other for the rear platform But the old man was too wide awake. He drew his pistol and fired, first at one and then at the other. One fell in the door of the car fatally wounded, and the other on the platform dead. The old man had a good eye for such birds on the wing. They had bis money and all his effecta, and it was evidently their intention to jump the train It was a bold risk bat it was a big snm. Tbe train was stopped—the dead and dying were carried off, and the Texas cattle drover gave himself up for examination. Both thieves were well known on the road, and train men are glad they are out of the way. Siebert was warmly congratulated upon his certain aim, and will b(e discharged from enstody without a doubt. One Texaa cattle drover is. too many for a brace of Chicago thieves,
