Mr. H. says that his assailant came whistling' up in the rear, and he has no recollection^ not even of t^e blow, until he found himself! sitting upon the sidewalk, nearly an hour, later. When struck he must have fallen upon his face, as his forehead and cheek show marks of heavy bruises. The rascal received no booty, for, as stated yesterday) Mr- Hopkins concealed his treasure in bis boot-leg before leaving his store.

MISSOURI. Spcech/of William* — Defence of Bain

cacM.

8t. Louis, Febauary 16. — Immediate!j upon the opening of the United States Civil Circuit Court this morning ex-Attorney General Williams rose and addretsed the jury, opening the defense of General Babcock. Th« court room was thronged, the greater portion of the audience being attorney*. Very few of the government witnesses were present, the most of those from Washington hjtving been discharged from service and allowed to leave the city. Gen. Williams devoted considerable time to an argument of the probabilities in the case and to a criticism of the evidence for the; Government. Assuming that what tbei Government had presented was competent; evidence, which was hy no means admitted,’ General Williams said the case might pre-j sent some suspicious circumstances but offered by no means the ground on which tdj base a conviction. He then proceeded with some explanations which would throw a different light upon the circumstance* between Babcock and the ring. At that time, he said, Joyce and McDonald were trusted officials, men of influence and poesessing the confidence of good peopl*. Babcock, on the other hand, was a warm-heart-ed, confiding, generous man, who did not give up a friendship once cemented for the whispers of calumny; Everything presented by the defense was incomplete, and could not but leave a painful uncertainty in every mind as to whetherit was tocon-^ vey a proper suspicion, or to simply indicate a weakness of the judgment, to which every

A good deal of attention was given to Gen. Babcock’s relations to tbs President and to the trust and confidence reposed in him as Private Secretary to the President In one aenae. General Williams said he became a part of the Executive. His official delinquencies would more or less reflect upon and degrade the Chief Executive of the nation No ingratitude would be so black as hi*, if he would bring dishonor on* who had put such confidence m him.
