weeks ago Speece again turned up in this city, and his presence was first manifested by demanding of The News a retraction of the article published in December, giving a narration of the robbery. This was refused, unless Mr. Speece established his innocence. Not content to do this, Mr. Speece went the rounds of the legal fraternity, endeavoring to have a libel suit brought against this paper, but without find1 ig any one who would take the case. With a view of determining the exact truth, the reporters proceeded to hunt up Wilson, to see what lie had to say about the original accusation. Mr. Wilson no sooner heard of Mr. Speece’s presence than he went for him like hot cakes; an arre-t was made by Chief Thompson's orders, and to-day. on a prelim i nary examination, Speece was commuted in default of $1,000 by the Mayor: the defendant's attorney refusing to let him testify in his own behalf. The News has never said

mainder of my life. I.OKl, HELP ME. I made this pledge to God and to the ChrisWomen of the Temperance Union, Indianapolis, Indiana, on the—day of 187-. An Unrighteous Quartette. Yesterday Hannah J. Williams, Martha Miles, Jane Lowe and Martha Mitchell, colored and degraded, from the wilds of Bucktown, were arrested for a Kilkenny fight, arising from a bandying of epithets and an innate disposition to quarrel. In the city court this forenoon the quartette came near having another fight, and were committed by the Mayor in intense disgust. Their language and their conduct were beastly, worse than a Hottentot assembly. 4'heekiuate<l A story is told of a parsimonious rich man who was remodeling a frame house into a business room, on a’prominent thoroughfare, by the side of which a handsome brick block was being erected by a widow. Without consulting the latter, the miserly old man told the bricklayers to build an outside flue in the wall of the brick building, thereby hoping to improve Ids frame structure"^ another’s expense. The walls of the brickblock were up about eight feet, when the business manager of the widow came along, discovered the “move” and quietly told the “boss" bricklayer to brick over the flue and discontinue the building of this adjunct. The chagrin of the wily old schemer may be
imagined.
An Important Tiling. Chris. Ahrens, manufacturer of the Lntta fire engine, is seriously considering the project of removing his works from Cincinnati to this city, and enlarging his facilities to a degree commensurate with his rapidly-in creasing business. It is understood that Allen, Elliott and others will donate a site, and it is believed that a stock association with one hundred thousand dollars capital could be formed in one day in this city by gentlemen who have already evinced perfect readiness to subscribe largely. This venture would be a good one for Indianapolis, for the Latta is bound to be the leading fire engine of the country, and the demand for it very great. In Cincinnati Mr. Ahrens is very much cramped for room, ^ind eligible sites are hard to procure. No effort should be spared to secure his removal. The Louisville Lottery. Local news is absorbed today in the drawing of the Louisville Lottery, in which very many Indianapolitans have invested stamps with the hopes of gain. .Special dispatches up till noon announce that ticket *M>4 drew #18,750 and No. 21,101, $75,000. No. 33,198 is rewarded with $7,500, and 37,577, 9.597, 48,333. 33,178 will realize the frightful sum of $37.50 each. The details are meagre. Last night Governor Bramlette announced that but 45,000 tickets of the 60,000 had been sold, reducing the capital prize to $187,500, as the Courier-Journal says.a prize quite sufficient for one person. This forenoon, in this city, young men and old men were on the qui t iir. and are in a much more fretful state this afternoon ; some of them havingalready given up faith in winning large prizes, but hoping for sufficient to refund the money
invested.
A Lively “Foxing.”
Yesterday officers Osborne and Bud Show 'Yoxed" a party of youths with a wagon, whom they believed to be stealing old iron from the “Burnt District,” and the lads taking the alarm, drove off through alleys, and Litxiej led the “spotters” along chase. On West
published nothing beyond particulars as given by the complaining witness in December last. It should be said for the police, that he would have been arrested several weeks ago, but they had hopes of securing Mrs. Wilson, who was believed then to he in
or near the city.
A Correction. To the Editor of The Evening News. Mrs. W. G. Terrell was not a grand-daugh-ter of the late General Taylor, of Newport, Ky. She was a daughter of John T. McKinney. who. at the time of his death, was one of the Judges of the Supreme Court of Indiana. Her first husband, John M. Thornton, was General Taylor’s grandson. He lived but a year after the marriage, and Mrs. Thornton was a young and beautiful widow when she first met Col. Terrell. It is pleasant to recall a picture so charming as the youth and vivacity of this lovely woman, and dreadful to think how fearfully dark are the events that sadden a life which began with a promise so brilliant.
