New York, March 31.—The war between the great railroad trunk tines, on the subject of carrying immigrants. N assuming an interesting shape and likely to result in a great reduction in rates and be of much benefit to immigrants The Erie, Pennsylvaniaand New York Central roads are engaged in hot coru{Kdition in the matter. One of these companies has. it is said, contracted with a majority of the steamship companies to carry their i migrant passengers west, paying the steamship companies 20 to 30 per cent, commission. The Erie and Pennsylvania roads have virtual control of the business here. VV. H. Vanderbilt, of the New York Central, yesterday said he was determined to break the combination if he carried inii-
grants at a dollar a head.

The Freight Blockade Ended, Etc. Jersey City, March 31.—A large amount of freight for the West has accumulated at the Erie depots here, and there are very few car loads of grain from West. This accumulation it is claimed will cause no block on the road, and the Superintendent states that every thing is working smoothly and all freights will be cleared off in three days. It is reported that the strikers disabled the forty-five engines they seized at Susquehanna, but the engines have been repaired in most cases. The strike at the freight depot here is ended and the men are being paid for February and March. Mrs. Metzlcr, the abortionist, has been convicted of causing the death of Ida W. The Slaughtering Proee*** in Teaaa. [From Fulton’s Letters to the Biltimore Ameri.
can.]
Our Baltimore butchers would lie as much startled as I was at the wholesale process of killing carried on in the establishment. The ordinary plan of drawing the steer down to the block, and striking him on the head with an ax, is too slow for the wholesale butchery carried on here. About one dozen head are driven into a pen, just sufficiently large to hold that number closely packed.'and a gate forced to behind them. The bed has an open slat platform across the top of it. upon which two men are stationed with poles with sharp pointed knives fixed on the end of them. With a rapidity acquired only by long practice, they plung thier spears into nec ks of the affrightened animals, cutting the jugular vein, and each successively falls as if struck down with an ax. The blood spurts out in jets as if from a dozen fountains, and in less than
mist, and has four wives. Second—That , the people who voted for said Cannon knew ! him to be a polygamist, and hence their votes are null and void. Third— That the election was unfairly conducted, and persons allowed to vote who had no right to do so. Fourth—That the oath taken by Cannon, in the’’Endowment House, where plural marriages are secretly performed,” Is shown by the evidence to be Irreconcilable with good citizenship and loyalty to the government of the United States. Fifth—That the contestant is the only person who was
legally voted for at the election.

with blood. The door of the pen leading in to the rendering-room is thrown open, and the animals drawn out in succession, a knife rapidly splits the skin around the neck and down the stomach. A rope is attached to the upper part of the hide with a clamp, to the other end of which is a mule, which leisurely walks off down the yard carrying the skin*of the animal with him, and leaving the carcase still quivering with animal life. A tackle hoists the body up to a level with the mouth of one oi the immense cauldrons, and in less time than we have taken to describe the process, it is in the seething and boiling mass. There are four or five of these cauldrons, each large enough to hold a dozen beeves, and they are kept constantly going during the killing ieasqn. The tallow is drawn off into large hogsheads, and the remains of these great soup kettles are carted out to what is called the ‘ hash pile” consisting of bones, horns, and the animal matter, from which the fatty substance has been ex-
tracted.

The Riel question and amnesty was also discussed, it being held that Riel acted in a perfectly legal manner, and was entitled to amnesty. It was held further, that the late government, by receiving the Manitoba delegates, who were in reality his messengers,
had in fact pardoned him.

What Would He Say Mow ? It was some forty years ago that a tall, thin gentleman, in a long great coat and cap, stalked into the Mechanics’ bank, in New York. He leisurely took from hia pocket book a five dollar note of the bank, and laying it before the teller requested its payment. The tellsr said: “We do not pay our notes.” The tall, thin man, who, it now appeared, was John Randolph, put on his spectacles, and read the note in a high-keyed voice: “The president and directors of the Mechanics’ bank promise to pay the bearer five dollars, value received.” “There—I want the five dollars which you promise to pay.” “But we do not pay,” rejoined the teller; “the banks have suspended payment” “Oh, stopped payment! Then let me tell you what to do. Take the sledge-hammer out of the hand that hangs over your door, and In its place put a razor.
