CITY NEWS.

“The Co retina, from ‘Soumumbuly.’ {SentUHii’a musical critique. . The Street Commissioner's pay roll for the pest week foots up $851 25. A delegation from the county jail w ill leave ior Michigan City next week. A marriage license has been issued to Aquilla 1'arker and Alitha C. Meyers. The jury fees in the Superior Court for the week ending November 15, amount to

$307 50.

A public meeting has been called for next Tuesday night, at the Seventh Presbyterian Church, to take some action for the relief of the poor in that part of the

city.

Juilge Test this morning took occasion to t*core the Journal and Sentinel, the former for butchering up his charge to the Max Newman jury, and the latter for presuming to insinuate that his charge was favorable to the defendant. The Superior Court is in general term, aud an effort is being made to have timling of the court in special term in the Douglass vs. Hasselman & Fish back cast' reversed. w which the plaintiff was awarded a judgment lor sometuidg; over $50,000.

upon this one thing and gave it as his firm impression that the Doctor had said he owned stock. He (witness) might be mistaken, but he recollected feeling uery mucy astonished at the time, and it had been very firmly impressed upon his mind ever

I since.

Wm. Henderson, Treasurer of the Water Works Company, gave a history of the purchase of the canal by the I., C. and L., but knew of no attempt to unduly influence any Councilman in the passage of the ordinance. He had in the past heard rumors generally affecting ‘the integrity of the-Council, but none of a specific nature, and was very frank to say that no Councilman held one dollar Water Works stock, or ever dul, to ids knowledge*. He had told Mr. Fishbaek that Mr. Gibson’s skirts were not clear, but he meant bv that that Mr. Gibson had charged in the Council that stock was owned by Councilmen, and after /' a search through the books had been madef by a reporter of The News, and a statement to the contrary published he persisted

in reiterating it.

Mr. Gibson—I never saw the publication.

Mr. H.—It was made in The News. Mr. G.—I don’t read The News.

Mr. H.—Then you miss a good many

gOod things.

Mr. Hammond, of the Sentinel, was the reporter who interviewed Mr. Ingalls in. Cincinnati Sunday last, and he testifled in regard to that interview, the main facts of which have lieen published. The witness then further spoke of the conversation with Mr. Ingalls. The President said he had but little acquaintance w it the Indianapolis Councilmen, but intimated to Mr. H. that some of them could be bought for $50. In this talk he also caused it to be understood that he understood that he considered Messrs. Sheplierd, Kennington and Reagan as C-ouncilmen who could be “influenced,” but he didn’t give any price so far as the two first w ere concerned, and very emphatically remarked that no overtures had either been made to or come from them. This statement concerning Messrs. Kennington and Shepherd “raised” both these gentlemen'and they demanded to know of the witness what reason Mr. Ingalls gave for supposing they could be controlled bv money. There was no reason Mp. H. could give, only that was the impression he, the witness, received from Mr. Ingalls’s talk, that he (Ingalls) considered them as in the market. In that Sunday interview President Ingalls also spoke of Gibson and Brown, but not in the same connection w ith Kennington et al. The editor of the Sentinel, Mr. Keenan, had no specific facts to state, but in reply to the questions of the attorney if there were rumors justifying suspicions of the integrity of the Council, answered in the affirmative. He gave them in the following detail. First, a rumor charging a collusion between the working majority of the Council and the Journal Company, some months ago, by which members drew stuff, not stationery, but which were charged as such to the city by the Journal management. Upon this the Journal

overfluoded this market. We manufacture our own furs, and warrant each article. We pride ourselves, as fpr great variety and fairness, and low' prices, to have “no competition” in this city. Call at B. Lelewer & Bro., Practical Furriers, 14 West Washing ton street. Old style furs altered into the

some years since.

A couple of evenings since a promiscuous row occurred at a boarding house on West Georgia street, in which hatchets and razors figured conspicuously, the former being used with good effect by Mary Burton upon one Tony Malony, who it appears attempted to'get possession of his baggage without paying his board bill. All the parties concerned were arrested and fined before Esq. Smock this morning.

The Trail af Bribery. (Continued from Second Page.] TO-UAV S PROCEEDINGS.

At 10:20 this forenoon a third session

was commenced, with Councilman Kahn upon the stand. He knew of no corrupt influences Wing used to secure the passage ol the canal ordinance, and had never been illegaUyapproached. He owned no stock

of the Water M orks or L, C. & L. Mr. Gimber, representative from the

12th, was the next, Mid like Kahn, he knew nothing that would hx a suspicion of guilt upon any Councilman. Never had been offered any reward, or anything eU**, for his vote upon any ordinance ; neither

had he any stock in either company. Mr. Brown retools the stand, and very

decidedly remarked that he had no interest in either company—not even a railway pass. Met Ingalls accidentally prior to the passage of the ordinance, and told him of some rumors afloat * 'huh aflfceted the

peeled gam in some w ay. This statement “aroused Bre. Craft, bin Mr. Keenan had no further derails, did not give it as an actual cireumstanee, but simply as a rumor, and it was theretore dropped until Mr. Fishbaek could be heard. The witness then deprecated the evident purpose of the “ring organ” ^Journal) to make this a partisan affair, a Sentinel tight alone; a thing which

he claimed not true.

Enos B. Reed, editor of the People,

knew nothing specifically which would aid j the investigation, and Mr. Harding, of the ' Herald, told what he knew about Mr. Con- . neJly having a fund, or raising a fund to | defeat the coal ordinance; after which the

committee rose until two o’clock.
