o’clock the cab driver was sent to the Union Depot tor nic oaggage, consisting of one trank and a value filled with sample good*, which were bnmgfat end deposited on the pavement along with several otfaera, for the porter to carry up. This individual started up with the' trank, but during his absence along came Boss Pitts, who mlected the valise from the remainder and made off with It The theft was not noticed by the’ porter, nor was the baggage mimed until Monday afternoon, when the gentleman cam* to present his checks. For some reason the matter was kept quiet until night before last and then information was conveyed to Chief Thompson. Yesterday this officer discovered that Pitta wss offering for sale watches and bracelets under suspicious circumstances, and last night some half dozen policemen were directed to look him up. The "Bom,” who is yonng in yean but old In larcenies, was soon afterward picked up by Officer Mitchell, and on being confronted by the Chief “owned up” and confessed the whereabouts of the plunder. On getting possession of the valise 8aturf!ay evening, Pitts carried it to a colored man named William Brown, an employe in Knox’s barber shop, who had previously arranged with him to make way with stolen property, and the two, in conjnnction with a lad named Williams, since fled to St Louis, divided the property, Brown was immdiately taken into custody, and abont $750 worth of watches, rings, thimbles, bracelets, etc., found in his custody. Pitts had managed to “unload” the principal portion of his share, and had sold things “dog cheap”— 465 bracelets going for $1 50; a valuable gold watch $12, and ao on. The 8t. Louis firm are now taking an invoica, but they estimate over $600 of the property still out, and which the polios are trying to-day to recoverBrown and Pitts are now in tCe station house, and the police authorities will probably bold them a day or two longer before a
preliminary examination is had.

Yesterday forenoon “Old Probabilities” or the weather clerk commenced laying a walk slippery, oh so slippery, and the work was completed this morning by a hurricane wind and a light, dry snow that concealed the treacherous sidewalk or surface of the street underneath, and made tnings slick and deceitful when they should be rough and substantial. Tight-rope manipulations are not more insecure than the pedestnanism of tolay, and many a woful wight has lost his oalance and cracked his pate when least he expected the agony. Somebody, evidently successful as a tumbler, thus deliciously describes the sensation of a fall, just snch a one as many have experienced to-day: You are generally looking at something very intently when it happens; perhaps yon are smiling to yourself. Then your left foot shoots out to one side with a suddenness that creates a sickness in your family. Ice commences to form on your spine and perspiration on your brow, and your scalp lifts up enough to permit a streak of cold air to pass under. The other leg goes ont at this juncture; your head snaps violently to the front, and there is a faint impression on your mind that the world is about to come to an end, , with nobody in charge. Miles x>f sidewalk spin ont from yon like ligbtnrng. Three-story buildings j ump over your head in swift succession. People disappear suddenly and with appalling mystery. Then your eyes close, your consciousness wanes, your soul goes out in one expiring quiver, and you arrive. The hard reality of the scene is then forced upon you with unpleasant abruptness. Everything is in its place but your spine. You get up and move off with a sickly attempt at a smile, feeling all

The icy condition everywhere lias setiously impeded the transaction of business, and has inclined pedestrians seriously to the notion of adopting skates for a motive faculty. Horses, smooth-shod, have gone down under the pressure, and rough ones too for that matter, anti this forenoon Superintendent Miller was forced to draw off. the street railway stock and have a blacksmith corps overhaul the whole cavalcade. Animals attached to heavily loaded drays, coal carts, etc , for'hdM difficult to stand on all fonrs, and many a bas to-dsy deserved the end gellng over bis own head which he gave the
brute because of its inability to pull.
There have been disasters among the pedestrians, a few of which are chronicled. Early this forenoon Governor Hendricks, in coming out of his residence on North Tennessee street, slipped and toll. and. his head striking the stone step with serious force; inflicted injuries sufficient to incapacitate him from business for several days. At first wildcat reports were circulated through the city, and it was thought he had sustained dangerous injuries—the nature of which prophesied fatal termination. From bis fam ily physician it is learned that perfect quiet and rest will soon bring him out ail right. Sergeant Wappenhans, “Old Probabilitiea,” Xr., was hoisted by bis own petard this forenoota, receiving a most righteous tumble, and coming down plumb on the broad of his back

the latest agony, and thnnext morning found nothing remaining but the fragments Next went a fine scarf belonging to the lady clerk, and on the same night the brute tore to pieces a twenty dollar fur cap, which his owner left carelessly on the counter. At last came a freak that condemned his hash, for on opening the store one morning a white crane, staffed up to all the naturalness of life, was discovered torn to shreds, and the tail feathers pushed down the furnace grate so as to raise a smell; still worse, the larboard side of the stuffed wild turkey showed signs of dissolution, and the head had gone off on an exploring expedition down the dog’s throat. Since then the animal bas been quartered in the. coal cellar. Uowm Abont tbe City’s Bonds. The City Clerk protests that in no, way is he responsible for the city’s default in the matter of paying interest on bonds held by Eastern firms. In August last he prepared a printed statement of the financial condition of the city, giving number of bonds, amount, when interest was due, etc.; copies of which are still on file in his office, and which conld have been consulted in a moment by any member of the Finance Committee or by the City Treasurer. The transactions East were something in which he had no connection. Additional letters are coming to light showing how the interest-default affected the Eastern credit of the city.
