Farther Investigation into the Credit Kobilier.
Colfax and Alley Upon the Witness Stand*

Serious ^Complications Between the United States and Spain.
Prospect of an Interesting Railroad War.
Etc., Etc., Etc.
WASHINGTON The Credit Moblller Bnalness. Washington, January 7.—The first open session of the Credit Mobilier Investigating Committee took place this morning. Mr. Colfax was the first witness before the committee. His statement was similar to Mr. Blaine’s, an absolute denial of any connection with the matter. The last witness before adjournment, John B. Alley, continued his testimony. He gave an elaborate statement of the rise and progress of the Union Pacific Railroad, detailed the difficulties in the beginning and argued that it could not have been completed unless the Credit Mobilier had been formed. He went into the Credit Mobilier and put in fifty thousand dollars. He also persuaded Messrs. Grimes and Hooper of Massachusetts to go, and that was all he knew about members of Congress in it. He never thought of corruption in connection with it He denied McCombs statatement concerning his overtures to Groochs in toto. This morning he gave a further account ot his transactions. Once the Credit Mobilier stockholders and U. P. R. EL., bondmen were identical. Up to the present time the President had not lost a dollar by the transaction. McComb says he has other evidence he will bring forward. ARKANSAS. Qovenaor Baxter’s Inangnral. Littlk Rock, January 7.—In his inaugural yesterday, Governor Baxter, in reference to enfranchisement, says: The disfranchisement of certain classes for participation in the rebellion is a great impediment in the way of restoring fraternal feelings among the people, and I am gratified io know that ther-* Is ® general dispoaition manifested to relieve the people in this respect Jt is needless for me to say that I earnestly desire the immediate enfranchisement of those persona who are now denied a voice in the selection at their rulers. From present indications it is sate to presume that before another general electiou .shall be held the last vestige Of war will have been completely obliterated. „' ... He concludes by expressing the hope tha* peace and prosperity, with all their accompanying blessings, may prevail throughout the State during the administration upon which we are about to enter. ILLINOIS. Another MnrOer-^The Hund*? LowKnilrond Aeeldeat. Chicago, January 7.—L. G. The p^jirderera have not yet been

The Common Council adjourned last night without taking action, as was e?pffited, in the proproaed repeal of the Sunday liquor selling law. There is much feeling on the subject and will be a bitter discussion before the matter comes up for final decision. Pxoria, January 7.—A broken rail at Edwards Station, twelve miles from here, threw the through Omaha express, on the Chicago Burlington & Quincy railroad, off the track yesterday. The engine passed over safely, but the last car, containing thg most of the nasseneers. was ditched. Wo pne was killed,
passengers, was ditched, wb pm but about a dozen were injured'
OHIO. .
Prospect of a Boll rood War. Cincinnati, January 7.—The Atlantic and Great Western railway have reduced the fare to New York and return to $19. Large numbers of persons are arriyiPS from Louisville, Indianapolis and St Louis, pn route to hew York, having come by this city in order to avail themselves of the rates from here, which is a saving to them of something like
SO per cenf.
It is stated that further reductions are to take place. There is considerable feeling existing among the different railroads, and there is no knowing to what extent the
fight will be carried.

Hiram Pitts and William Woodman, ac cased of stealing a shot gun from Samuel Beck, and of picking up some loose cigars on Sunday last, were arrested last night by Officers Travis and Keefe, and to-day bound over to the Grand Jury by the Mayor. An Ill-timed Feeling. A desperate attempt seems to be making by the friends of the coal road speculation to force a quarrel between the city and the roads now running to the coal fields. These roads have done mnch for this city in the past, and are nuw the sole resource of this city for block coal. We know this feeling of hostility is ndt general in this city, and should not have expression at this time. It may be proper when the coal road is in 4 condition to do better, but not now. The writer takes for his text an assertion that “An officer of one of the roads now bringing coal to this city has made the open threat that if the city votes in favor of building toe new coal road that the supply of coal would be cutoff.” and proceeds to say, “The fact now stares the people in the face, and it can no longer be concealed, that our city is considered fair plunder by the monopoly. They not oqly discriminate against the city, charging exhorbitant prices for hauling ooAl here, but now, when we want to rixjL oun tags, they tell Ns that we shall suffer the penalty of a coal famine,” and so on with nearly two columns of similar error. I am told that our road is the one referred to in the aboye quotation, and as the*the assertions and inferences conveyed or i©tended to be conveyed, are totally incorrect, rwish, for this company, to make the following denial of them. This company has no intention of diacontinuing toe transportation of coal to this '“'ty for anv cause whatever. No pity in the United States is having the railroad transportation of its fuel for this winter performed so cheaply, considering the distance, as the city of Indianapolis.
