MINOR MENTION. Chips rattle on South Illinois street. Snowed in is what’s the trouble with the

Go and see Plymouth Rock at Plymouth Church. Public school children are being vaccinated rapidly. . St. John’s Cathedral fair to-morrow even ing at Masonic Hall. We shall meet and we shall miss him— Christopher Truesdale. The jail birds are indulging in psalm singing^hese winter evenings. Experimenting on the chain-gang at fifty cents a day is fine practice. We shall miss the Christmas Carol cadenced from Gad’s Hill. The light of^other days has faded from the garish room over the Maison Doree. The certificates of vaccinnotion have lieen published aftd distributed to the scholars. At a recent religious meeting the “sisterbrethren" were called upon to speak a word. Three hundred students consumed the midnight oil at the N. W, C. University last

Rev. Mr. Brandt, at the Y. M. C. A. rooms, wants eatables for the News Boys’ Christmas dinner. Seventeen hunnred street lamps scintillate in the city at nights, i. e. when they are all lighted. Mrs Jeremiah Riley, whose drunken husband broke her arm, was set yesterday to the poor house. The old inhabitants sigh for the traditional sign, “Fresh eggs laid here every day by Thomas Carr.” Mosquitoes in the county stables were aroused this morning by .Sheriff Ruckle from their resting places. $229 60 has been lashed out of the Indiana avenue saloon keeper, Charles Wreidt, for violating the liquor law. “He don’t advertise” accounts for the lack of business in this busy season at more than one lonely-looking business house. Send your contributions for the Orphan Asylum Christmas dinner to* Mrs. John C. Wright, Mrs. Bea. Harrison, or Mrs. John Fishback. Grand Secretary Foster has issued the proceedings of the last annual communication of the R. W. Grand Enaampaient of Indiana; I. O. O. F. Three hours and twenty minutes is the number of hours for burning the gas tonight, the moon being relied upon for effulgence during the balance of the time. At an entertainment here the other night, a darkey waiter when passing round a plate* of Malaga grapes, astonished some of thfc guests by inquiring if they would have any of "de gooseberries.'’ The little cow bells on the engine houses, whose iron tongues don’t make as much noise as an irritated female’s tongue would, gave a wee alarm of fire yesterday. The fire was in Patrick Colbert’s house, corner of Ann and Missouri streets, and entailed only small
loss.
Aatneeatteast Matter*. Academy of Music.—Mr. Murphy s new departure—from “Help” to “Handy Andy” —last evening, was a successful on* in all respects. His rendition of the title mleVas excellent, showing him to be fully as familiar with the Irish style as with the German. In “Colorsd Help” he exhibited his Ethiopian abilities to good effect To-night he takes a benefit, when will be presented “Arrah na Pogue," with a strong cast The same play at the matinee to-morrow afternoon, and “Help" in the evening to close the engagement The Risk—Attracted a large crowd last evening, the weather being a little more moderate. Christmas is to be a grand gala day, with a magnificently gotten up Santa Claus as one of the attractive features. Again.
LFrom I he St. LouL« Democrat, J MeCreerv is a jolly old sohl, and person«i» ly on* of the cleverest m s:sn. You would take him, from hit dr$» and appearance in the Senate, to be a well to u<3 farmer, fresh from his ham yard, who had just dropped in to see with what little wisdom the world was governed. He was elected a few years ago to fill the anexpired term of Mr. Guthrie, and Serve4 qntil tl>« 4th of March last He was a candidate for re-election, and the Indications were decidedly in his favor. He felt so confident of success that he declined to go home to take part in the canvass. Finally his friends persuaded him that he must be present at least to receive the congratulrtions of his friends when the thing was done. Po he started for Frankfort. He had got as far as Lexington tvhcii he received an invitation to a big wedding party in that city, commemorative of the nuptials of two merubera,of_the first families. He accepted, and presented himself, in homespun and tobacco juice. At the supper table that evening he met his political death in this war: Right Iri presence of tbe elite, under the blaze of the big chandeliers, ue transferred an unwashed soup-spoon, yet moist with mock turtle, into the bowels of arformidable pyramid of ice cream, and so mixed up his courses as to chagrin and disgust all the first families represented at the festal board His doom was Sealed. No man who so thor onghly disregarded the proprieties was fit. to represent Kentucky m the Senate. A delegation went from Lexington next day intent upon his det^ftt, and tbejr^ worked so assiduously in the name of all that Was respectable in Kentucky, that they shelved him effectually. John W. Stevenson, then Governor of the State, was elected in his stead. McCreery went back to finish ou^ his term in the Senate, swearing vengeance against the “shoddyites of the Blue Grass region.” as he styled’them. He was rich, and the masses of the people rather liked him because he wasn’t Turvydropsical; he has spent a year in hard work among his friends, and has now redeemed the blunder of the soup spoon. He is a man of unusual ability in his way, ahd there is in mm as a public sneaker a vein of humor that ofter recalls the best days of Tom Corwin.

HOLIDAY GOODS, I*er Steamer Paris Ue Clyde.
Chinese Dwarfs.
Making dwarfs and beggars is a common business in China. For the first, a child of three or four years is taken and a heavy porcelain vase is put over him, so that the head alone is free. This is taken off every evening so that he may sleep, but is put on again in the morning. The child thus advances in age in this inflexible mould, until he can no longer grow. Then the vase is broken. The horrible sufferings that must be experienced in this process are even exceeded by the practices in certain establishments in Pekin, where beggars voluntarily submit to having their eyes taken out and their limbs broken in order to excite public commiseration.
