window overlooking the street.

“Monsieur leSwiss, 1 have travelled a couple of leagues to-night over the rook of houses, being pursued by informers. Do not let your master suppose that I have been here on an affair of gallantry, or that I am Madame de Bauffremont s lover; you will hare to do with Cartouche. So take care what you are about. But they shall Lear from me bv

post.”

Madame returned to her apartments more dead than alive and awaking the Marquis, related what bad happened. He declared that she must have had the nightmare, and that she only suffered from disturbed dreams. Two or three days later she received a polite and respectful note from Cartouche, enclosing a safe pass for hetself and family, with the permission of extending it to her friends. The letter was accompanied by a small box enclosing a magnificent diamond, and the stone being valued by Lampreur, a famous judge of precious stones, was valued at two thousand crowns. The Marquis deposited the sum in the hands of the treasurer of Notre Dame, for the invalids of the Hotel Dieu. and so the affair ended happily to all concerned. One more anecdote, and this' short narrative is finished. After his capture and condemnation in 1721, he underwent torture with extraor-

ed, or rather more properly, the notorious robber chief, Cartouche, who, at the head of bis daring tiand, not only filled all France with his 4. ee ds of violence, but even carried terror into the streets of Paris. Hh reckless audacity was mingled with a degree of gallantry and devotion which softened, as it were.' the harsher feelings of his character, and vested him with a sort of ramance and popularity, even among those who were held

in constant fear by his name.

Monsieur Argenson was the incomparable Lieutenant General of the Police, but in defiance of all his vigilance, Cartouche appeared in the midst of Paris, and at this unwelcome apparation, many families, who had not the courtly refuge of a residence at Versailles, betook themselves to their country chateaux, although the severity of the winter made such removal both inconvenient and uncomfortable. They soon found, however, that safety was not to be secured by flight, for Cartouche, at the head of forty men, attacked the Cardinal of Geveres, as he was passing through the outlets of the capital to Bourges. It is true that he dwelt gently with the Cardinal, having deprived him only of bis pontifical cross and episcopal ring, together with ten louis d ors, which were foun&Jn his purse, a pastry of 'frobin redbreast, and two flagons of Tokay, which he had won from a friend at picquet. It may be observed here, by way of parentbesis, that this worthy Cardinal, although prodigiously scrupulous, was somewhat addicted

f;, l! ^e r, ,! ,, f;.. H h.’'mig d b?°io«T«";ESi THE BEST IS THE CHEAPEST!

righteously belonged to the poor; neither would he indulge himself in buying expensive food or wines; but his conscience was perfectly at ease when he played at picquet for some recherche dish, or for a flagon of shine, which cost some ten or fifteen louis, If he was so unfortunate as to lose, he paid his debt of honor by giving a volume of ecclesiastical mandates and pastorial instructions, of which he always carried a number superbly bound and illuminated. These little self-deceptions were perfectly understood by his friends, who read.ly fell in with his huftiors, because he was not only the most dainty, but, in fact, the most charitable of prelates—a most can-

did and good hearted man.

To return to his adventure with Cartouche.

The bandit refused to take anything from l/Abbe de Cervette, the Cardinal's private secretary, saying that he was too handsome a youth to be robbed, and that they bad not the

audacity to commit so great a eiime. “Since yoft are so very kind and courteous

to Monsieur L'Ablbe, ' said his Eminence, "you ought to leave him at least half of the pastry

and one flagpn of the Hungarian winec “Most gladly will I share them with Mon-

sieur L'Abbe,” replied Cartouche, “if he will do us the honor to join our party, and partake

with us.”

But the abbe hastened to offer his excuse for so doing, and declining so polite an invitation; and thereupon followed mutual compliments and regrets, which were, beyond a doubt, more amusing to the despoilers than to the despoiled. One of the band affected to believe that the abbe was a fair lady disguised in

a cassock.

“Rash and unhappy being,” said the Cardinal, “do you not know that such an act would be sacrilege on my part? And bow can you imagine me to be a guilty debauche?” Cartouche gave his comrade so furious a blow that it felled him to the ground. “There—that will teach thee to treat our prelates disrespectfully,” said he, reddening with anger. “See how the rascal presumes to attack the Cardinal of Bruges; knowest thou not that he refuses tithes from those that are in distress?” continued Cartouche, foaming with rage, and kicking the unhappy man, who lay sprawling on the ground. ^ So full of terror were the good people of Paris at this time that no one ever ventured oat at night without being accompanied by five or six armed men; and whose attendants were either too few or too cowardly, attached themselves to the equipages of their friends. The gens-darmes were continually on the alert, and while their ever-rigilant chief was on his night patrol Cartouche entered his house, and so thoroughly rifled it of all its articles of value, that the worthy (chief was obliged to eat soup with a pewter spoon. The major of the French guard did not know which way to turn; so urgent aud so pressing were the applications for sentinels and escorts that many he was obliged to refuse. In short, since the days of Fronde, Paris had not been filled with such perplexity and fear. While this extraordinary man was thns baffling the vigilance of some, and defying the authority of others, it became bruited about that the influence of one lady’8 name was allpowerful with Cartouche and his myrmidons. The Marquise de Bauffremout distributed passes, which were always respected by the band, and the secret of her power soon became known. She had returned home one morning about half-past 2 o’clock, and a* soon as her waiting-women had disrobed her, she dismissed them as usual, and sat down to write her journal, which, unhappily for history, has been lost amid the tumult that afterward occurred. She was a woman of great talent, and so foil of observation that nothing passed her unno-

ticed.

She was enjoying her busy solitudes, when her attention was drawn to a confused noise in the chimney, and a few moments after there appeared in the room, amid a tumbling mass of soot, plaster and swallows’ nests, a man armed to the teeth. His precipitate descent having impelled the burning logs into the center of the apartment, his first business was to seize the tong*, and to deliberately replace the embers in their position on the hearth. Some glowing cinders having remained upon the oarpet, he gently removed them with nis foot, and. turning to the astonished marquise,

made a Low bow.

“Madam, may I inquire who it is that I have the honor of addressing. “Sir, 1 am Madame de Bauffremont; but as yon have the appearance of a gentleman, rather than that of a robber, I am at a loss to know why yon entered my appartment by such means, and at so unreasonable an hour!” “Madam! I had no intention of entering your chamber. Will you hare the kindness to accompany me to the door of tout hotel?’' added he, teawing a pistol ont of his belt, aad

lighting a wax candle. “But, sir ” -*»

“Madam yon will have the goodness to make haste?” said he, cocking his pistol, “and yon shall order your Swiss to draw the

string.

"Sneak lower, sir I for heaven's sake speak lower, the Marquis may overhear you,” said

tho terrified woman.

“Tray, madame. put on your mantle; it is excessively cold, and yon may suffer from going ont in your dressing gown.” His orders were implicitly obeyed, and
