The Spirit Os Liberty
On Liberty Island, New York Harbor, in ‘‘the foremost place of its country’s showplace” stands the statue of ‘‘Liberty Enlighting the World.” Although the United States contains concontains countless monuments, this colossal statue is unique in that it represents two ideas; the continued friendship of the French & American peoples and the Spirit Os Liberty that gave birth to our country. The great copper lady has now stood for more than 100 years at the chief entrance to ‘‘the land of the free.” She is shown as a proud woman, whose loose robe falls in graceful folds to the base of the image. Under her foot, broken chains typify the winning of liberty by a free people. Her huge crown has spikes like the rays of the sun; in her left arm is a book inscribed with the date of American Independence — July 4, 1776. The most stirking feature is the great torch that Liberty holds in her right hand, high above her head — the light that has welcomed millions of. freedom — loving people to our shores. 1^ Is The idea for the State of Liberty originated in Paris, France in 1865 to bind the friendships of the two nations since the American Revolution. Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was chosen as the sculptor. Due lo wars and many other adversities, it was not until October 28, 1886 that the dedication for this great gift to our country materialized. The statue was presented to the people of the United States by the French people as a suitable memorial of the friendly feelings between the two countries. The statue is a symbol of “home” to Americans returning from Europe and is a freedom symbol for foreigners arriving in the United States. The emotions are great for those returning to our shores after a lengthy absence. A great lady, our ‘‘Lady With The Lamp.” Orville Easterday Unit 189 American Legion Auxiliary Walkerton % 7 You’ll love the E’S of running an ad in the INDEPENDENT NEWS E asy E fficient Economic E ffecti ve CALL TODAY! fc 586-3139
