WORLD-WIDE SERVICE PROVIDED BY LION CLUBS The Lions Clubs International is a world-wide service organization offering free of charge its assistance to those in need, regardless of race, religion, political persuasion. As of June 30, 1996, Lions Clubs International had 1,425,310 members in 43,373 clubs in 714 districts and 181 countries and geographic areas. Lions sponsor the Leader Dog program, Cancer Control, Diabetes Program, Hearing and Sight assistance and most clubs have hospital and medical appliances to loan free of charge. The North Liberty Lions ' Club was organized in 1959 with both men and women members. Since the demise of the Walkerton Lions, several active members of that club have joined the North Liberty Club along with other Walkerton residents who have become active. We have, and still do, collect used eye glasses and hearing aids which we repair and then take and dispense to folks in Mexico. We have also purchased glasses for children and adults locally who could not afford to pay for their own. The money raised by the Lions stays in the community for community service. SAVE THOSE RECEIPTS & BOX TOPS St. Patrick School takes advantage of businesses that are trying to help in the rising costs of education. Whether it be through the “Education Advantage Program” offered through Ray & Kenny’s SuperValu, here in Walkerton or through General Mills in their box top program. Parents are invited to save their receipts from Ray & Kenny’s and give them to the school so that they may be turned into the participating store and turned into cash for the school. Bags for these receipts hang in the school corridor and parents and friends of the school are encouraged to participate in this worthwhile program. General Mills’ offer to turn box tops into education funds is also another way that St. Patrick School, in Walkerton, is helping to meet the high expenses of running a top-notch educational program. General Mills will pay 15 c for each box top up to a total of SIO,OOO. In addition, General Mills will offer a SSO bonus for every 750 box tops collecte’d. Chewy Apple Spice Oatmeal Cookies 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 cqp granulated sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) margarine, 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional) softened 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 3/4 cup apple butter or applesauce 3 cups Quaker oats (quick or 2 egg whites old fashioned, uncooked) 2 tablespoons skim milk 1/2 cup each: raisins and 2 teaspoons vanilla chopped dried apples 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour Heat oven to 35O°F. Lightly spray cookie sheet with no-stick cooking spray. Beat together sugars and margarine until well blended. Add apple butter, egg whites, milk and vanilla; beat well. Add combined flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg; mix well. Stir in oats and fruit; mix well. (Dough will be moist.) Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto cookie sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to wire rack. Cool completely. Store tightly covered. About 3-1/2 Dozen Easy Bar Cookies: Spread dough evenly onto bottom of ungreased 13x9-inch baking pan. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until edges are light golden brown. Cool completely; cut into bars.
