Choose costumes that allow children to move around easily. Shoes should fit properly so the children don’t trip and fall. A light, brightly colored costume with reflective tape will ensure extra safety. Encourage children to use face paint or make-up instead of a mask that could obstruct their vision. Prepare your home for Halloween. Pick up ladders, play things and other objects from the yard so children won’t trip. Turn on your outside lights and clear off the porch or sidewalk. Observe the hours set for Trick-Or-Treating. Always have a route planned and carry a flashlight so you can see and be seen easily. Accompany smaller children! Give your children a meal or snack before they go out Trick-Or-Treating and emphasize that no treats should be eaten before they get back home. Discard any treat if the wrapper is loose or the seal has been broken. Take precautions that will keep children safe from traffic. Warn children of the danger of dashing between cars and to cross the street at the intersections.
