Fire Dept. Open House Set For Nov. 3 The officers and men of the Walkerton Volunteer Fire Department would like to invite you to an Open House at the Fire Station, to be held on Sunday, November 3, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., for the presentation and dedication of the new pumper truck which officially went into service on October 7, 1996. We are proud to show the new pumper to the community on this day. Please join us for some refreshments and a short presentation ceremony. Congratulations FALCON PRIDE The JGHS Falcon Pride received a first division rating at the ISSMA regional contest, held at Elkhart Central HS, on Saturday, Oct. 19. A total of 22 high school bands from northern Indiana advanced to the regional competition and of those bands 11 received a second division rating and 11 received a first division rating. ISSMA groups schools into classes similar to the class groupings for sports programs (Class A for larger schools; B, C and D for smaller schools). The class is determined by the student body size. To receive a specific rating ISSMA dictates minimum standards. Bands are judged by six judges, two in music, two for marching and two for general effect. For bands to get past the district level and advance to the regional, bands must first achieve a score of 50.00. At the regional level bands must reach the minimum of 60.00 points to receive a first division rating. To advance to the state competition bands must rank in the top five overall in points. CW Red Ribbon Week Being 1 Observed In Area S
Red ribbons are decking the halls at North Liberty Elementary for the seventh year. Red Ribbons are popping up everywhere: around trees, on cars, in classrooms, on letters, on visitors and most importantly on students and staff at the school. No it is not an early Christmas present, it’s the entire school community showing their support against drugs. During the week of October 23-31, the National Red Ribbon Campaign Week for a DRUG-FREE America, students are drawing posters, writing stories, poems, songs and raps, saying NO to Drugs. The students and staff will sign drug-free pledges and a
Mr. Dan Fortlander comments, “we definitely are an up and coming band in the state. They performed as such a high level. I’m very proud of all of them.” The Falcon Pride will conclude their fall season at the upcoming fall concert which begins at 7:00 p.m. This year we did not qualify for state competition but watch out next year!!! If you have not seen the band in action, plan to attend the fall concert set for Monday, Oct. 28, at North Liberty. Not only will you enjoy the high school band, but the middle school and sixth grade cadet band will perform too! YOUR INVITED ON OCT. 27th The First Baptist Church, Clark and Maine Streets, in Walkerton, will hold services with the speaker being Pastor Ronald E. Williams on a home missionary: Reaching Troubled Girls For Christ. The services will be at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. and then at 7:00 p.m. During the Civil War, the constitution of the Confederacy allowed its president a line item veto.

pledge poster and do drugfree classroom activities. The Five Star grocery store provided paper bags that the students decorated with drug-free pictures and sayings. They are then returned to the store to be shared with the community. The Red Ribbons representatives this year are sixth grade students Danny Graves, Eric Kring, Jimmy McEndarfer, Crystal Baxter, Alan Allsop and Amanda Jacobs. Mrs. Cynthia Williams, Dean of Students, is the coordinator of the program. The North Liberty P.T.A. and the Drug-Free School Grant help to sponsor the Red Ribbon program and activities.
Get Out And Vote!!! The American Legion Auxiliary urges all Americans to vote on Election Day, Nov. 5. Only in voting can the issues be resolved and the mandate of the people be felt. Did you know, that one vote might win or lose an election? The Auxiliary is cooperating with other patriotic and civic organizations in encouraging all citizens to vote on Election Day. Regardless of party affiliations, every man and woman should cast his ballot for the good of the community, state and nation. America’s greatest weapon is the Ballot Box. The Ballot Box is the place where Americans have the opportunity to say who they want to run their nation. But like any weapon, it is powerless unless it is used! Do you know who is to blame if candidates are elected to public office whose policies we do not approve? It is the stay-at-homes. John Wathen Community Room Recently Named The Walkerton-Lincoln Township Public Library is pleased to announce the dedication of the new Community Room to the memory of John Wathen. Mr. Wathen was an active member of the Library Board, serving for many years as the treasurer. John was instrumental in setting the ground work for the acquisition of the new library building which will be located at 300 Michigan Street, in Walkerton. The formal dedication of the John Wathen Community Room will take place at a later date. ANNUAL EYE SCREENING OFFERED Local ophthalmologists are offering free eye exams from 1 to 3:30 p.m., on Sunday, Nov. 3, at the E. Blair Warner Family Practice Center, 714 N. Michigan, St., South Bend. The screening, sponsored by Memorial Hospital of South Bend, is open to the community. Physicians and their staff technicians will screen for visual acuity and glaucoma.
